From the award-winning author of Land of Love and Drowning, an electric new novel that maps the emotional inheritance of one couple newly in love. When Fly and Stela meet in 21st Century New York City, it seems like fate. He's a Black American musician from a mixed-religious background who knows all about heartbreak. She's a Catholic science teacher from the Caribbean, looking for lasting love. But are they meant to be? The answer goes back decades--all the way to their parents' earliest loves. Vibrant and emotionally riveting, Monster in the Middle moves across decades, from the U.S. to the Virgin Islands to Ghana and back again, to show how one couple's romance is intrinsically influenced by the family lore and love stories that preceded their own pairing. What challenges and traumas must this new couple inherit, what hopes and ambitions will keep them moving forward? Exploring desire and identity, religion and class, passion and obligation, the novel posits that in order to answer the question "who are we meant to be with?" we must first understand who we are and how we came to be.

An interesting read that explores relationships, who we fall in love with, marry, and how families intertwine with one another and impact us.

Conceptually fascinating and structurally distinct, the novel is a love‘s origin story — one that spans decades and continents before its lovers are even born.

Yanique‘s writing style is fluid and lovely, making it easier for the reader to flow along with the jumps in time, in place, in perspective.

How are we romantically readied, or thwarted, by loves of the past - not only our own, but also those of our mothers and fathers?

BarbaraBB I‘ve been very intrigued by this one. 2y

In love with literary romance! The author believes you bring the love that made you to each new relationship. Fly‘s father fled the 1989 SF earthquake with his first love. We learn about Fly‘s mom and then Fly‘s first love. Stela‘s family is from the Virgin Islands and we meet her mom and dad, too. My fave story is Stela‘s first love and how it unspooled after a semester abroad. Then, Fly & Stela find each other in spite of the pandemic. #botm

Megabooks Not YA, fwiw. I get asked that sometimes. 2y

BarbaraBB This sounds so good despite it being completely out of my wheelhouse! And all those prompts… tempting! 2y
Cinfhen Ohhh, I need a #Ghana book ! Thanks for sharing ❤️#Stacked 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I really enjoyed it despite hating romance. It was equally literary fiction as romance. 👍🏻 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen the whole book is not in Ghana, but stela does study abroad there for part of it, which really affects the rest of the book. So it depends on how strict you are with it. 2y
Cinfhen It‘s good for me!!! 2y
