Fan Fiction
Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events | Brent Spiner
14 posts | 10 read | 17 to read
Brent Spiner pens an explosive and hilarious novel, Fan Fiction, a personal look at the slightly askew view of the relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this noir comedy might just be the one. Set in 1991, just as Star Trek: The Next Generation has rocketed the cast to global fame, the young and impressionable actor, Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, that take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that enlists Paramount Security, the LAPD, and even the FBI in putting a stop to the danger that has his life and career hanging in the balance. Featuring a cast of characters from Patrick Stewart to Levar Burton to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, to some completely imagined, this is the fictional autobiography that takes readers into the life of Brent Spiner, and tells an amazing tale about the trappings of celebrity and the fear he has carried with him his entire life. Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of Fandom.

This book is probably best enjoyed by serious fans of Star Trek: the Next Generation, and even then you should probably have a high tolerance for wacky hijinks paired with disturbing stalker details. Luckily I have always loved Data, and Brent Spiner has certainly created something memorable in this amalgam of memoir and Hollywood whodunit. The result seems like an episode where the Holodeck is glitching big time and all safety protocols are off.

Yeah I loved this one. I thought it was going to be a memoir on the dark side of fans but it was actually the most crazy, 10% memoir, 90% fan fiction story about the dark side of fans. The audiobook was genius. Most of the cast of Next Gen joined in and between music and sound effects, it was a full immersion experience, and a fun commentary, making fun of what can certainly become a scary situation.

This was a weird book but it tells a fun story. It's a noir fiction about someone stalking Brent Spiner as his daughter from an episode of TNG. It wasn't what I expected but it was fun to get a little memoir inserted into this crazy plot.

I grabbed this (signed!) from Mysterious Galaxy last week and read it today. It was quick and easy. But the plot was all over the place and zany to the point of cringiness. But my main beef was Spiner's depiction of himself thinking more with his dick than his brain. I get he's making fun of himself and maybe the noir genre, but it felt really juvenile. ⬇️

silentrequiem That said, there was a great chapter about Gene Roddenberry's funeral. And there was some deeper themes about overcoming trauma and not letting the past get in the way of the present that I appreciated. But overall, probably not a book I'll ever revisit. 3y

This is an odd, but fun read. Spiner writes a fan fiction of his own life very loosely based on an experience he had with a stalker. While the events of the book are fictional, it does communicate some truths about Spiner and his experience with celebrity. I imagine bigger Star Trek fans would understand more references and enjoy this more than I did.

"This is the thing about being a 'celebrity'. There's no way you can please everyone or be sincere with everyone or respond to everyone's phone calls, so no matter what, eventually you're going to fall short and disappoint. And that makes my own neurosis even more complex. As much as I want to be loved by everyone, I don't want the responsibility of loving everyone in return."

Sometimes amidst the silly antics Spiner presents a heartfelt truth!

Hooked_on_books I read a list recently of people who had met celebrities and been disappointed and some of them were so petty! Expecting someone to be “on” at all times and giving selflessly to you is ludicrous! Celebrity culture is such an odd thing. 3y
StaceGhost This is excellent thank you for posting! I‘m definitely gifting this to my husband and then stealing it lol 3y

This book is fun but strange! Spiner mixes a real life look at his life behind the scenes of Star Trek TNG and a Hollywood noir mystery. He receives threatening fan mail, and he and twin detectives try to solve the case. It was laugh out loud funny a number of times. Plus I loved the full-cast recording of my favorite ST:TNG stars: Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, etc. and VO artists like Saskia Maarveld. Go #audiobook!!

🎧 I‘ve thought about this story for a day. How do I review this book without sounding like a crazed fan girl straight from the pages … while conveying my utmost pleasure in listening to it?

MWA HAHAHAHA

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!

DATA was my TNG Spock! I loved both of these characters! Brent Spiner rocked the DATA performance!! I grew up in the Star Trek Universe. This book was totally my jam.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Twainy The story? Actor VS fans that range from typical to seriously demented & clinically insane … the actor becomes inseparable from the character with nearly everyone he meets creating a sense of trepidation & paranoia.

80‘s references - check!
Dark & self-deprecating humor - check!
Ludicrous fandom in general - check!
Own it people!! :)
Sarcasm - check!
Amazing voices from my past - check!
Fiction Mem-noir - totally!

Twainy Just remember this is fiction. It‘s hilarious, creepy, with a red herring or two, twists, turns & plenty of paranoid inner monologue.

This book scratched all my fan girl nostalgia itches! A fun ride down memory lane that I will listen to again.

Thank you NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to read this book, I truly enjoyed it! … I am such a nerd. LOVED IT!

Twainy @LiteraryinLawrence @Reggie I could listen to so many of the Star Trek actors read just about anything 😁 Patrick Stewart! So many! This could be a holodeck (nerd alert) episode of Dixon Hill. Total nerd. 3y
