Something is stirring in London's dark, stamping out its territory in brickdust and blood. Something has murdered Saul Garamond's father, and left Saul to pay for the crime. But a shadow from the urban waste breaks into Saul's prison cell and leads him to freedom. A shadow called King Rat, who reveals Saul's royal heritage, a heritage that opens a new world to Saul, the world below London's streets--a heritage that also drags Saul into King Rat's plan for revenge against his ancient enemy, . With drum 'n' bass pounding the backstreets, Saul must confront the forces that would use him, the forces that would destroy him, and the forces that shape his own bizarre identity.China Mieville's "King Rat" was nominated for both the International Horror Guild and Bram Stoker Awards for best first novel.

I've been working a lot the last few weeks and haven't had much time for reading so I decided that the best way to start my Saturday was breakfast and a book. I'm about halfway through this one and so far it's a fun and weird book. I'm looking forward to spending some time on it over the weekend.

I picked this up at the local bookstore today and thought I'd start it tonight. I've read several books by China Meiville before but never this one. I've heard it compared to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, which I loved. I have high hopes for this one.

Reggie Welcome to Litsy! I‘ve never read any Melville either but am curious. 5y

#QuotsyApr19 Day 25: The transformation of a mere trap into a full-blown #challenge. I have a few Mieville novels in my shelf but have not gotten around to reading them yet. Maybe next yead. 😂😭📚🧚🏼‍♀️💕

Readergrrl My first Miéville! I fell in love! Bought it at a shop on Piccadilly Circus close to 20 years ago on a last vacation with my best pal before I married. As an American, I was enamored with all things of British underground scene. Miéville, with his shaved head and earrings, writing an urban gritty fairytale set in the Iiteral Underground was perfect. I‘ve never reread it simply because hearing the title brings me right back to that time. Wonderful! 6y
GatheringBooks @Readergrrl oh what a beautiful tribute to mieville. i have a few of his novels in my collection but haven‘t gotten around to reading them yet. story of my life. 😭📚🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚 6y

#12DaysofChristmas - Pipers Piping

Saul not only finds out that his father is King of the rats and that he has rat powers, he also learns that the arch nemesis of the rats, the Pied Piper, is gunning for him.

LibrarianRyan This sounds like something I would read. 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai This one was pretty right on! My details on it are a little hazy...but certain scenes stick out and still kinda freak me out. Not my favorite Mieville novel - but still a gooder! 👍 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GrilledCheeseSamurai Yeah, you can kind of tell it‘s Miéville‘s training wheels novel. What‘s your favorite Miéville? 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TobeyTheScavengerMonk The Scar is my favorite, and then, Perdido Street Station. I really got a kick outta Un Lun Dun as well. I haven't read Rail Sea yet or the Kraken. I have them - just gotta make the time. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GrilledCheeseSamurai Oh awesome! I‘d go with The Scar and Perdido Street Station as 1 and 2 as well, then Kraken, then The City & the City. Kraken is INSANE. 7y

I will always associate this book with London because I started it on the flight back home from Heathrow airport, and kept thinking "Hey, I was just there!" as I read.

Saul finds out that, now that his father is dead, he has inherited rat powers and rules the kingdom of the rats under London. He must team up with the King of Birds and the King of Spiders to take down the evil (not joking here) Pied Piper. #LondonCalling #RockinMay

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Miéville's first novel and you can kind of tell. I LOVE the fact that the entire author description just says "China Miéville is a graduate student at the London School of Economics". 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Hey @Jaberwocky here's more awesome to add to your TBR because it's not nearly long enough. That is what you asked for, right? 8y
Cinfhen I knew this was your post before even looking....I love your book selections! #MostUnique😊 8y

Mehso-so

I keep hearing people comparing this favorably with Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. My take; if you want a Miéville Neverwhere dupe, then Un Lun Dun is a better choice by far. Despite it being geared towards a younger audience.
