Conspiracy of Ravens
Conspiracy of Ravens: The Shadow: Book Two | Lila Bowen
Following the thrilling and critically acclaimed Wake of Vultures comes the next spellbinding novel in the Shadow series - a tale of the supernatural world hiding beneath the surface. Nettie Lonesome jumped off a cliff, not knowing what she'd become. She's still not sure, but the destiny of the Shadow is calling her to help someone she'd just as soon watch die. Her new sidekick, an annoying shifter named Earl, is hellbent on finding the Rangers. He's just escaped a railroad camp where monsters are held captive, their very bones used to fuel the tracks scarring Nettie's wild, beloved Durango. And he wants revenge. Nettie, now facing the truth of her own identity and going by Rhett, must decide whether to side with her friends and the badge on her chest or take off alone on the dangerous mission pulling her inexplicably toward the fight of her life. When it comes to monsters and men, the world isn't black and white. What good are two wings and a gun when your enemy can command a conspiracy of ravens?

A good sequel to Wake, where Rhett and his posse go after an evil railroad tycoon. As much as Squidapus enjoys these books and especially appreciates their diversity and representation, he still has annoyances with them. For one, Rhett is a bit of a jerk. And not an endearing one. He has his reasons but it makes him frustrating to follow. It also has what Squidapus calls Buffy syndrome; the confrontation with the big bad is quick and disappointing

Reggie It‘s nice to see a cephalopod out and about! 5y

Well, we found the sequel to Wake of Vultures for a fiver at the store so since the first book was fresh in our minds we decided to strike while the iron was hot. It'll be interesting to see if it can maintain.

 @Jess7

I haven't actually read this yet (I really should get on that)...but it's definitely a red cover. 🤔😁

2BR02B Minor pet peeve: when a relatively simple cover design is clogged up with accolades. Put them on the back cover! 6y
readordierachel I'm reading the first in the series now and really liking it 6y
Jess7 Great job! 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @2BR02B Yeah, they went a little crazy with the design of all the books in this series that way. 🤪 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @ReadOrDieRachel Nice! I haven't read the first one yet either. 😜. They're qued up and waiting for me though. 😅 6y

There were some topics in the first book (Wake of Vultures) which came to an abrupt close in this book, and I found myself missing the exploration of those subjects within the context of a YA novel. But this was still an interesting take on the Western genre.

This sequel to Wake of Vultures did not disappoint. Rhett Hennessy, last seen jumping off a cliff, has found a way to soar. It takes some effort to remember his friends and his duty as the Shadow, but he eventually faces a new and terrifying evil. Rhett has such a fiercely distinctive voice and way of viewing the world, he is unmistakable, no matter what name he's travelling under. This is my favorite supernatural shape-shifting Western ever!

I'm a bit mad at myself for taking so long to finish this book. This series is amazing. It's cowboys and monster with well written characters, humor, action and heart. I can't wait to see what Rhett and the gang will get up to next😁

melrailey I loved the first book and can't believe I haven't got to the second one yet! 7y
Daughter-of-words @melrailey I started this one in December and I don't even remember why I put it down, but I'm so glad I picked it back up😁 and I just found out that book 3 is out next month!! 7y

I have had such a great run of books lately. Nothing has been meh and this one is no different. It is the second book of The Shadow series. #LBGTQ #fantasy #western Cannot explain it except i adore it! Lila Bowen/Delilah Dawson is one of my favorite current authors.

Can't wait for the next one! These are great books. I love the introduction of the Chinese and Irish!

RanaElizabeth I loved the first one so much, I really need to read this one! 7y
IndyHannaJones @RanaElizabeth it's good. There are times when it dragged a little and Rhett was a bit of a pill...but he's one of the most honest and unapologetic characters I've ever read and he doesn't care if you like him or not. 7y

Surprise bookish mail to me! I preordered Conspiracy of Ravens and forgot about the freebies the author offered! The mineral eyeshadow based off of her books is fitting. Murderdust! Love love love ❤️ 💛💚💙💜🤓

MeganB Preorder goodies are like my crack! If you offer them, I'm 70x more likely to buy your book! 7y
josie281 I know, @MeganB !! The first was one of my favorites I have read this year but I WAS going to wait then freebies happened! 7y
MeganB I hate preordering, with the unfortunate guesswork on when they'll charge my card and when it'll actually show up and all that but I'm completely willing to put up with that for free stuff! 7y

Contrary to my fears, my heart was not stomped on nearly as much as I would have thought (which makes me worry about what will happen for the rest of the series. It was great seeing Rhett become more comfortable as himself, though there are still issues (but the possibility for him to not have to keep binding has been nicely set up). Overall, an amazing job addressing gender and race issues while telling a compelling tale.

I never realized just how much there could be to a person's relationship with their genitals. Like, seriously. And then throw in gender identity not matching your genitals, and then all of the thoughts about how you use them (or not), and... whoa. My brain has been broken by YA fantasy.
