Salt Lick | Lulu Allison
14 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Britain is awash, the sea creeps into the land, brambles and forest swamp derelict towns. Food production has moved overseas and people are forced to move to the cities for work. The countryside is empty. A chorus, the herd voice of feral cows, wander this newly wild land watching over changing times, speaking with love and exasperation. Jesse and his puppy Mister Maliks roam the woods until his family are forced to leave for London. Lee runs from the terrible restrictions of the White Town where he grew up. Isolde leaves London on foot, walking the abandoned A12 in search of the truth about her mother.

As I finish one book I‘m usually so certain what I‘m in the mood for next… but feeling indecisive tonight ! Do I go for fictionalised historical fiction, longlisted Womens Prize title, obscure history with a feminist twist, a book with a stunning cover and lots of promise or a Book Riot True Crime recommended title! Arrgghhh…… I too much good stuff!

Caroline2 Hmm, these all look really good. 🤔 2y
Mitch @Caroline2 I know, right! 🤣 2y

They walk for half a day to the new seawall. They buy fish from a man at one end, char cook it on an open fire, eat it in grubby fingers as they walk, then toss the bones to the waves and run to the middle of the long causeway. Their faces are bright with pure happiness. The sea birds extend their reach, express their wild, twinned joy up to the heavens and all the way to the never near horizon.

Cathythoughts Beautiful picture and words 2y
charl08 @Cathythoughts yes, it's a lyrical book, the author is a poet. Photo is mine: View of the Bass Rock from North Berwick Beach (Scotland). 2y

Got sidetracked by Covid but now getting back into this.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Hope you feel better soon!! 2y
squirrelbrain Hope you find it as good as I did! 🤞 2y
charl08 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm feeling back to normal but the sick bit delayed the reading. 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain it took me a bit to get into, but enjoying it now. Wondering whether it will be shortlisted (but I've only read three of the others!) 2y

You know that feeling like you have read an entirely different book then everyone else? I kept wondering if the digital copy was corrupted or something so many sentences made absolutely no sense and I had to read them over and over.
Beyond the rereading it was a quick read but honestly most of the time I had zero idea what was going on while also completely knowing exactly where the story was going.

KatieB Ugh. This is still on my TBR list for the women‘s prize longlist. I just finished one slog (Popisho) and am sad to hear there might be another. But at least it sounds a lot shorter than Popisho! 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @KatieB it does look from GR that I am in the minority here, people seem to like it. This is sad to here about Popisho, it was going to be my next but I am also reading Damnation Spring and I could already tell they both center around miscarriages and 2 of those at a time is way too much so I am moving into Erdrich's The Sentence. 2y
KatieB Oh I‘m sorry. I do think Popisho could be a tough read if that‘s triggering for you 2y

I was not even sure I wanted to read this; it is dichotomy to get hold of and I‘m not keen on dystopian fiction. However, it appeared on Litsy so I gave it a go.

It‘s not an easy read, being set in an eerily realistic post-pandemic future so for that reason I can‘t say it‘s one of my ‘favourites‘ off the list. However, it‘s beautifully written and scarily unputdownable so I think it may progress onto the shortlist.

squirrelbrain Did you finish it yet? @charl08 although I can imagine it‘s not the kind of book you want to read whilst feeling rough. I revisited ‘the chorus‘ and once I‘d reminded myself what they were (🐄) they made a lot more sense and provided an interesting viewpoint to the story. I hesitate to say ‘read it‘ @rockpools - it depends how you feel about post-pandemic fiction. It‘s a closer to home version of Station Eleven…. 2y
rockpools Thanks Helen - and great review! I think I‘d like to try it… but probably not right now! 2y
charl08 Thanks Helen. My attention span is rubbish right now so have put it on hold for Murderbot and this one: (in between the 💤) 2y

BarbaraBB Call me crazy but this sounds great. 2y
squirrelbrain How are you finding the Kupersmith? @charl08 Hope you‘re not feeling too poorly. 2y
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - I think you‘d like it. It‘s quite difficult to get hold of though. It‘s published by a small press and I think they‘re printing more copies as a result of it making the longlist. 2y
Megabooks Excellent review! 2y

Still struggling through Women's Prize Long list Salt Lick I have heard it picked up in the 2nd half, let's hope b/c it is a drag. Hoping to quickly move on to another WPFF long list Popisho which had been on my TBR so excited for that. Damnation Spring I grabbed on audio so will finish that this week. The other 2 seem to be quick reads to finish the week strong.
I am reading way more then my monthly avg this month!!

Cooking is now a ritualised hobby for a few enthusiasts who come to the market to shop at the spice stall and the greengrocer on their afternoons off. Like most people, she orders her food at the beginning of the week from a menu - Ten Economy Meals for two, Whole Week Healthy Lunchtime packs, Comfort Food, Nearly Raw, Vegan starters.

#weekendreading @andrew65
I finished Bluebird, Bluebird this am so not really counting it, I am moving on to speed through Devil In A Blue Dress which is due back at the library, Damnation Springs which I picked up on audio, and trudging my way through Salt Lick, which honestly I am not sure I am going to make it. It is a Women's Prize longlist and I am struggling with it.

Andrew65 Great choices. 2y

humouress sympathy 😉 2y
charl08 @rockpools enjoying it so far... 2y
charl08 @squirrelbrain what do you think of the chorus? 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m not sure about the chorus,TBH I‘m skipping most of those sections. 😬 I‘m sure it has some meaning in relation to the story, but a bit over my head! 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures I am reading this now and I have to say struggling. I too am skipping the chorus. But some of her sentences don't make sense to me? So many I have to read over and over I wonder if I am alone? 2y

squirrelbrain I just put this on hold on Libby as it appeared today…only a 2 week wait. 2y
arubabookwoman Just bought this as a cheap(er) Kindle deal. Not to say that I will get to it this year. 2y
charl08 @jlhammar @squirrelbrain @arubabookwoman I justified it to myself on the basis it's from a small publisher..🤷‍♀️ 2y
