We Are the ARK
We Are the ARK: Returning Our Gardens to Their True Nature with Acts of Restorative Kindness | Mary Reynolds
11 posts | 1 reading | 8 to read
The loss of biodiversity is rapidly reducing the ability of the earth to maintain clean air and water and to provide food and habitat for all her creaturesincluding us. We must take direct action to alleviate the unjustifiable stress on the individual plants and animals and other life forms we share our planet with. But how do we do it? In We are the ARK, award-winning garden designer Mary Reynolds provides an answer: by restoring nature to our home gardens and public spaces through acts of restorative kindness (ARK). So what is an ARK? Its a restored, native ecosystem, and a thriving patch of native plants and creatures that have been allowed to re-establish in the earths intelligent, successional process of natural restoration. Over time, this land becomes a habitat for pollinators and wild creatures who are in desperate need of support. In We Are the ARK, Reynolds details exactly how home gardeners can play a role, no matter the size of their space. Readers will be inspired to take part in positive environmental change and equipped to do so at home.

Have you started our #buddyreads yet? There are a number of new books (UK) published this Spring, all along similar themes (tagged ⬇️). Gardening for wildlife is the bee's knees, literally. How marvellous would it be if this method of sharing space was taken up everywhere. I have hope 💚🐝🐌🦋🕷🐛🐞🦗🪺🐦‍⬛🦉🐿🦔🐰🐀🦊💚

Do you have any further recommendations?

I started the simple act of adding milkweed to my garden last spring. I am adding more this June. We have never used chemicals; neither have many of my immediate neighbors. Small steps.
I am so happy you introduced this book to us- it‘s so life affirming & the illustrations are gorgeous!

AllDebooks It's an absolute favourite of mine. I find it so inspiring and full of hope x 2w

Soubhiville YES! Great quote, and an important view. 12mo
AllDebooks @Soubhiville Absolutely, I had the best time with my kids exploring nature. Their favourite thing to do was to make 'fossils' with clay and whatever interesting things they'd found on our adventures 12mo

#Naturalitsy

This is madness!!! It's November and all the seedheads left for wildlife are sprouting new life. These should be dormant rn. I have never seen anything like this, have you?

This is why we need to make as much protest as possible against climate change. Our seasons are disappearing into a year long calamity where anything goes.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That is crazy and very scary! I‘ve never seen it happen. Poor things. 😢 2y
StaceGhost Say 👏it👏louder👏! I‘m with you!!! 2y
AnnR That's frightening! The plants are confused. (Our apple trees sprouted new leaves and flowered when they should be going dormant.) Thank you for posting that @AllDebooks. Everything feels so stressful right now. IMHO the powers that be, who could make the most impactful changes, aren't doing a whole lot or at least not enough. (I'll get off my soapbox. I'm totally freaked out about the US election outcomes right now.) #climatechangeisreal (edited) 2y

AnnR By the way, nice photo. 🙂 🌿 2y
AllDebooks @Ann_Reads it's terrifying. I don't understand the indifference of world leaders. Can't make all the money when everything's gone. 2y
AllDebooks @StaceGhost YES GIRL X ✋️ 2y
AllDebooks @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I've tried to save them, planted all in seed trays to overwinter. It's the knock on effect that worries me. No habitat/food for hibernating insects, less food for birds and their chicks come spring. 2y
SamAnne Oh no. It's so hard to predict what each season will bring these days. In the Intermountain West of the U.S. where I live we are having colder than usual temps and have about 5 inches of snow on the ground. But who knows what will come next. 2y
