And so the Rivers of London series marathon draws to a close ...or so I thought! Turns out my library has several of the novellas and a short story collection included in the series, which should be more than enough to keep me entertained until the next novel's release date in June, though whether that coincides with when my library gets the audiobook license ...😩 I can hope.
Anyway! 1/4

Robotswithpersonality In keeping with the 'we all know the characteristics that make up the enjoyable framework of this series, here are the things in this entry in particular that I loved,' here's another list that won't make much sense until you read the book:

Beatrice the rottweiler!
“shall I compare thee to a giant squid, thou art more lovely and less tentacled“
2/4

Robotswithpersonality 3/4 Listing selection of beverages to the potential assailant with the light show and the golden spear as a possible peace offering :“I'll even throw in a croissant“
Danny's Goblin market purchase 😉
Talking fox arguing about priority of washing when the washing machine is so comfy to curl up in! 😂🥹
3/4
7mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Peter on ackwledging his Latin is improving:
“Proof positive that if you bang your head on a copy of Pliny the Elder eventually the Romans will seep in.“ 😆
German raven, Ghost plane 🫡

I had some expectations for this book, and they were ALL delivered on. Probably my favourite other than the first of the series, and I'm genuinely sad there aren't more for me to read right now. I bought the second novella and a short story collection, but those aren't full novels. May start the series over from the beginning.

I was gonna be very upset if there weren't any inquisition in this book, but I don't have to.

I like the rivers of London series, so much so that I had to check several times while reading the first chapter as it felt like I had already read this one. According to my logs, I did not but the Silver vaults of London felt familiar.... I wonder in which book I read about them ? Any idea ?

After a flash of light that knocked out the CCTV cameras, a thief trying to hold up the London Silver Vault is found dead with a neat hole in his chest and no heart. Can Peter Grant and the denizens of the Folly discover what happened and prevent it from happening again?

Given the title and a pretty heavy hint in the blurb I think most people expect at least part of the answer. Of the 2 major events in the epilogue, 1 was expected, and 1 not.

Dragon Thanks @PageShifter it‘s a fun fantasy- police procedural set in London. It‘s great in audio or just reading the books. 💚🐉 2y

The newest case of victims murdered over possibly enchanted silver rings is business as usual for the magical police of the Folly. And then an angel shows up.

I really enjoyed this one! Peter trying to juggle a complicated case with the impending birth of the twins was charming. I continue to love the humor & world building. More of the secondary characters I love (& the foxes!), & an intriguing ending for the future of the series. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Aimeesue Love this series! ❤️ 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I really need to check out this series! Just put the first on hold. 2y

"It's hardly likely to be an actual biblical Angel," he said when I'd finished.
"Why not?"
"In a world chock full of murderous blaspheming bastards, why would an omnipotent and omniscient deity pick a couple of obscure Brits to do away with in such a public manner?"
"Maybe they did something particularly bad?"

It‘s always a joy to be back with Peter Grant and Nightingale, especially as narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. That said, this book was missing something. I kept forgetting who the villain was even though, in theory, that character should‘ve been interesting. Aaronovitch does better when there‘s an overarching big bad like the Faceless Man. We drove down to the Mississippi coast just to get my husband out of the house. It was nice. #audiowalk

Aaaaand I'm done with the Rivers of London novels.

I have the "Tales of the Folly" and a few short stories left.

Lots of things happening. Lesley, Bev, Thomas, Molly, Toby, an avenging angel,...

GingerAntics This series has a Lassiter, too?! 2y
julesG @GingerAntics Nope, just this book. It's the ninth in the series. The angel is the antagonist in this book. 2y
Leniverse I haven't read this one yet. Waiting for the library to get the audiobook, because I'm hooked on the Kobna narration. Other than that I think I'm only missing What Abigail Did That Summer. 2y

julesG @Leniverse Kobna is doing a great job. Have you listened to the interview at the end of False Value? BA picked up on a few of the questions and put the ideas into the book. 2y
GingerAntics @julesG an Angel as an antagonist. That‘s an interesting spin. Now I really want to read this series. 2y
julesG @GingerAntics Do. It's really good 2y
Leniverse I read recently that BA now writes dialogue and picks different regional accents thinking about how great Kobna will make it sound, but that he also reduced Peter's run-on sentences out of pity for the poor narrator. 😆 2y
julesG @Leniverse Yepp. They talked about this in the interview after book 7 (or was it also 8?). It was so much fun listening to the two of them. 2y

The latest Rivers of London was just the antidote for a bit of a reading slump. After 8 books I worried I might be getting tired of the series but there are some excellent developments here to make me rededicate myself to it! Very cool larger magical world plot points as well as Peter‘s personal life made for a fun read. Very satisfying indeed. I do wish there was more Nightingale though…

I listened to this as an audio book & the narration was fantastic!

Always so satisfying - Aaronovitch keeps the plots fresh & the history lessons engaging while keeping the fans happy. Such a snappy writer, with lots of wit & a great ear & warm heart for his characters. This chapter contains possibly the funniest Monty Python reference I've ever come across (I lol'ed!) & my girl Beverly gets her time in the spotlight - as is only right. LOVE.

Dragon Peter Grant and Beverly- one of my favourite couples 💚🐉 3y

I love the random humour in this series.

KathyWheeler My husband and I are listening to this right now,and we were saying that the random humor is one of the things we love about this series. (edited) 3y
Libby1 @KathyWheeler - me too. That and fun cultural references to the Lord of the Rings or Silmarillion (spelling? 🤷🏼‍♀️) and Doctor Who! 3y

I really enjoyed this 9th installment in the Rivers of London series. This is a series I always both listen to as well as read because I love the performances of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith so much. My only complaint is that Nightingale seemed underutilized in this book. I hope to see more of him in the next one.

Libby1 I have this but haven‘t read it yet. So exciting! 3y
Ericalambbrown @Libby1 I really enjoyed it! I hope you do, too. I‘ll look forward to seeing what you think - I felt like there was some unexpected niftiness with some of the recurring characters that made me happy 😌 3y

I‘m totally in love with Peter Grant and the whole Rivers of London world. All the gang is back including, a surprise. Paranormal shenanigans ( and a couple of grisly murders) ensue. The actor who reads these stories is phenomenal. Not the best in the series but very enjoyable.
