Told through diary entries, blog posts, newspaper clippings, and historical documents, this book was fascinating from the beginning. Childhood friends turned enemies are trying to write about Illsbeth Clark- a witch who drowned in a well. Is the witchcraft real? Is it the ramblings of mad women? Who murdered Elenor? It went in a different direction than I expected, but I liked the format of entries. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.75

I considered dnfing this book, but I'm glad that I didn't. About halfway through, it goes from two very human unlikable characters fighting over book ideas to the witch and her demon, who are far more interesting 🐈‍⬛

This is my second read by Camila Bruce having read In The Garden of Spite previously. I enjoyed the format of journal entries, news clippings and blog posts and think Bruce writes well. I just didn‘t enjoy it much. I‘m not sure I have to have a likeable main character to enjoy a story, but the two main characters in this didn‘t do much for me, mostly the influencer. Also, these characters should be about 40 and their pettiness was exhausting.

This was an interesting story but it was a bit disjointed at times and the ending wasn't as good as i'd hoped. The story is told from multiple povs which confuse the story a little more. I think I wanted a more dramatic ending, given the build up to it. None of the main characters are overly likeable. They're all pretty self obsessed and focused on their own issues to see the truth. #Netgalley 3*

I liked the format of the book best. It contains excerpts from historical documents, diaries, online confessionals, and newspaper articles. The backstory is about a woman accused of witchcraft and later killed by mob. Two former friends feel compelled to tell Ilsbeth's story in different ways leading to a feud and mental unravelling of both characters.

Comprised of multiple formats- articles, diaries, online confessional posts, chapters of a novel & found documents, the tale that emerges of F— makes for a delightfully spooky and fun read. In the 19th century, Ilsbeth was considered a witch and brought to mob justice. And now, once childhood friends are in bitter competition to write Ilsbeth‘s true story. With surprising humor and women who are unlikable but interesting, this is hard to put down!
