A mesmerizing coming-of-age and coming-out graphic novel by the genius writer-artist of the Eisner Awardwinning breakout hit My Brothers Husband Set in contemporary suburban Japan, Our Colors is the story of Sora Itoda, a sixteen-year-old aspiring painter who experiences his world in synesthetic hues of blues and reds and is governed by the emotional turbulence of being a teenager. He wants to live honestly as a young gay man in high school, but that is still not acceptable in Japanese society. His best friend and childhood confidante is Nao, a young woman whom everyone thinks is (or should be) his girlfriend, and it would be the easiest thing to play alongshe knows hes gay but knows, too, how difficult it is to live ones truth in his situation. Soras world changes forever when he meets Mr. Amamiya, a middle-aged gentleman who is the owner and proprietor of a local coffee shop and is completely, unapologetically out as a gay man. A mentorship and platonic friendship ensues as Sora comes out to him and agrees to paint a mural in the shop, and Mr. Amamiya counsels Sora about how to deal with who he is. But it wont be easy. Mr. Amamiya paid a high price for his freedom of identity, and when a figure from his past suddenly appears, the situation becomes a vivid example of just how complicated life can be.

Japanese cartoonist Gengoroh Tagame said he wrote this for his 15-year-old self; a time when he would have loved a story about a gay high school student who gets the courage to come out when he meets an openly gay man who owns a café. Inner feelings are revealed via patterned backgrounds, & facial expressions are easy to decipher in this beautiful contemporary manga. Translation by Anne Ishii. #LGBTQ #comics

One of the homoerotic panels. (There‘s no sex in this novel.)

What animal is on this boy‘s t-shirt?

AkashaVampie To me it looks like pug-ish?? So dog 1y
Lindy @AkashaVampie Maybe. The tail looks like a pug‘s but not the head. I wondered if it‘s a tanuki, but the tail is wrong so it‘s probably not. 1y
AkashaVampie @Lindy the face almost looks like a mole's face. So maybe something that lives under the ground??? 1y

Lindy @AkashaVampie Maybe. The boy is in the closet about being gay, so an underground creature would be an apt totem for him. And the animal looks like it has appropriate claws for digging a burrow. (edited) 1y
TrishB I thought an otter when I first looked. 1y
Lindy @TrishB Interesting. I see it in the head and whiskers, but an otter‘s body is long and they have thick powerful tails. Still pondering. 1y
Megabooks It‘s a pig. Like a breed for production that‘s being kept as a pet. At least that‘s my professional opinion. 1y
Lindy @Megabooks Thanks Meg! I trust your professional opinion. 😊🐖 1y
Lindy @Megabooks I‘ve gone back to puzzling over this image because the footprints, whiskers and small ears don‘t seem piglike. Could it be a capybara? Could it be that I‘m too obsessed? 😄 1y
Megabooks Maybe…but that twisted tail and those back legs that looks like hams scream pig to me. Fun fact…pigs also have corkscrewed penises and uterine horns. (And weird kidneys too while we‘re at it!) 1y
Megabooks That was probably an overshare…also that thick neck and how the fat is distributed is very porcine. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
Lindy @Megabooks Not an overshare, not at all. One of my sisters raises Tamworths and is an accredited meat inspector as well as running a meat shop with her husband and son. I‘ve heard all the stories, seen the innards too. 🐖 1y
Reggie @Megabooks I love when people of Litsy share their expertise. You‘re awesome, Meg. Lol 1y

I don‘t read manga often, but I really enjoyed Tagame‘s previous work, My Brother‘s Husband. In this newest, he again looks at homophobia in Japan, but through an affecting coming-of-age/coming-out story.

In his moving Afterword, Tagame writes “1979. I didn‘t have any lovers, much less gay friends. No adults around me to whom I could come out…This is for that 15-year-old 42 years ago.”
