From the author of the dark and devious...beautifully written (Stephen King) Mirrorland comes a richly atmospheric thriller set on an isolated Scottish island where nothing is as it seems and shocking twists lie around every corner. A remote village. A deadly secret. An outsider who knows the truth. Robert Reid moved his family to Scotlands Outer Hebrides in the 1990s, driven by hope, craving safety and community, and hiding a terrible secret. But despite his best efforts to fit in, Robert is always seen as an outsider. And as the legendary and violent Hebridean storms rage around him, he begins to unravel, believing his fate on the remote island of Kilmeray cannot be escaped. For her entire life, Maggie MacKay has sensed something was wrong with her. When Maggie was five years old, she announced that a man on Kilmeraya place shed never visitedhad been murdered. Her unfounded claim drew media attention and turned the locals against each other, creating rifts that never mended. Nearly twenty years later, Maggie is determined to find out what really happened, and what the islanders are hiding. But when she begins to receive ominous threats, Maggie is forced to consider how much she is willing to risk to discover the horrifying truth. Unnerving, enthralling, and filled with gothic suspense, The Blackhouse is a spectacularly sinister tale readers wont soon forget.

The skeleton of the story is an engaging one, but it went on way too long to keep my interest. Better editing needed IMHO.

Cathythoughts Such a pity. A lot of these covers and titles promice such thrilling reads 🙄 9mo

I love just about any story set in the stormy, dark, and dreary Scottish Outer Hebrides as it‘s the perfect setting for mysteries and murders. This was a twisty mystery dealing with trauma, mental illness, family dynamics, and even a little possible reincarnation thrown in. I‘m usually really good at figuring stories out but this one threw me for a few loops, which I love! Really enjoyed the audiobook narrators as well! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

A real good atmospheric thriller/mystery set on a fictional island in the Outer Hebrides.

I adored Johnstone‘s debut novel, MIRRORLAND, so I was super excited to dive into one. It opens on 2/15, with Maggie‘s arrival on the isolated Isle of Kilmeray in the Scottish Hebrides. Determined to uncover truths while grieving her mother‘s death & recovering from her own breakdown, Maggie is a sympathetic heroine amongst the tempestuous weather, buried secrets & the edges of myth making it a thin place. Eerie & lovely, I couldn‘t put it down!

marleed You‘re naked BOTMs look cool! 1y
TorieStorieS @marleed Thank you so much! Our living room bookshelf‘s center case is all BOTMs- but I have more to add! Bookshelf organizing is my 2023 goal! 1y
marleed Haha. I get it. Consider bookshelf arrangement as one as one aspect of my book management hobby. Maybe not as high as reading, but it‘s up there! 1y

TorieStorieS @marleed I have been waiting to get shelves installed upstairs and they were put in yesterday- so I can finally start really playing with my books! We have two cases in the living room and now I can start excavating my basement books!! I‘m so excited- but a little overwhelmed as to where to start!! 1y
marleed Oh how fun. Since I seasonally decorate my front room shelves (0r as @Lindy gave me an idea for a new moniker - my secondary library!) from month to month, my ‘reading room‘ shelves get traded out often - I really do play with my books! One idea I‘m mulling for a reading room section is a 5* area. I like my shelves to be sorted differently than B&N! I also mix read and TBR but this year put clear post-it tabs on unread spines. 1y
TorieStorieS @marleed Oh that sounds so lovely! I do decorate the shelves with different treasures for the seasons but have never thought to switch out the books too!! I just may have to do this now too!! Thank you for the inspiration! 🥰My last library was organized just by author‘s last name- and that‘s how they are stored in basement boxes… but I am not sure how I want them now! 1y

The story moved rather slowly, and there was WAY too much build-up to both Robert and Maggie‘s backstories. The author kept including end-of-chapter cliffhangers, but she didn‘t give the reader any morsels of information that would help them guess what‘s next. It left me feeling frustrated and bored all at the same time. Rating: ⭐️⭐️

Love this image @Andrew65 reminds me of Jan Pieńkowski's work.
I'm up for #20in4 looking at achieving 20 hours reading as I'm hoping to finish up with the tagged and The nature of witches.
