Other Terrors: An Inclusive Anthology
Other Terrors: An Inclusive Anthology | Rena Mason, Vince A Liaguno
11 posts | 7 read | 7 to read
An anthology of original horror stories edited by Bram Stoker Award(R) winners Vince A. Liaguno and Rena Mason that showcases authors from historically excluded backgrounds telling terrifying tales of what it means to be, or merely to seem, "other" Offering new stories from some of the biggest names in horror as well as some of the hottest up-and-coming talents, Other Terrors will provide the ultimate reading experience for horror fans who want to examine fear of "the other."Be they of a different culture, a different background, a different sexual orientation or gender identity, a different belief system, or a different skin color, some people simply aren't part of the community's majority--and are perceived as scary. Humans are almost instinctively inclined to fear what's different, and there are a multitude of individuals who have spent far too long on the outside looking in. And the thing about the outside is . . . it's much larger than you think. In Other Terrors, horror writers from a multitude of underrepresented backgrounds have created stories of everyday people, places, and things where something shifts, striking a deeper, much more primal, chord of fear. Are our eyes playing tricks on us, or is there something truly sinister lurking under the surface of what we thought we knew? And who among us is really the other, after all?CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE: Tananarive Due, Jennifer McMahon, S.A. Cosby, Stephen Graham Jones, Alma Katsu, Michael Thomas Ford, Ann Dvila Cardinal, Christina Sng, Denise Dumars, Usman T. Malik, Annie Neugebauer, Gabino Iglesias, Hailey Piper, Nathan Carson, Shanna Heath, Tracy Cross, Linda D. Addison, Maxwell I. Gold, Larissa Glasser, Eugen Bacon, Holly Lyn Walrath, Jonathan Lees, M. "His sallow brown face was covered with a kinky black beard that looked like a map of England."

O..k? ?

I've been spending the past few days binge reading and wrapping up current books so I can start the New Year with some fresh reads! The only one I'm taking with me into 2024 is Don Quixote. It's a CHONK that I'm savoring slowly. Less than 100 pages left of Other Terrors, and I'll have exceeded my goal of 150 books read for the year with 156!

Only cool kids read at the bar 🍺

#BooksandBrews

Reggie There was a time I would go hang out with my parents at the casino but instead of playing I would go take my book to the bar, order a margarita, and just read. I read a whole anthology of zombie short stories that way. 14mo
reading.rainb0w @Reggie that's awesome!! Sounds like you were winning every time you went to the casino 😅 14mo

#Read for #Scarathlon I used my 2 hours of final #ScarathlonSprint (hosted by @LiseWorks ) time to finish the last 10 stories in the tagged book & read a little of my final book. Although not every story was a winner, I liked this inclusive collection.

128 ScarathlonWordSearch words + 400 points for the stories + 1point means 1681 points for Team #SpookyGhostClub 👻🖤👻

Impulsively joined the #scarathlon last week (let‘s go #skeletoncrew 💀👏📚) and I hope I can keep up. Here‘s a small selection of kindle books I hope to dip in and out of this month to stay on theme. Looking forward to #spooktober feels!

Emilymdxn Looking good! If you read off theme that's all good too - a surprising number of word search words to be found in books that aren't spooky at all! I can't wait to see what Other Terrors is like that looks soooo up my street 1y

This collection of horror stories about what it means to be “other” was overall really good. It started off strong with McMahon, Katsu and new-to-me author, Michael H. Hanson. There were a couple I didn‘t love somewhere in the middle. Hailey Piper and SGJ was great as usual. The final two stories by S.A. Cosby and Tananarive Due were so good, especially Cosby‘s.

Reggie I don‘t think of Cosby as horror but he is. 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I haven‘t read his books yet, so I was surprised he was in the collection myself. 2y

Highly recommend this scary, inclusive anthology in which the demons of racism, homophobia & sexism terrify one as much as the actual demons. Scary & thought- provoking tales by S.A. Cosby & Holly L Walrath shone. And “Where the Lovelight Gleams” will break your heart. Damn. #horror #shortstories #racism #homophobia #sexism

A horror anthology exploring the theme of otherness. Some stories were excellent, a couple were so bad I couldn‘t finish them. The rest were pretty good. One story, Scrape, I wish they would expand into a novel. I wanted more and I had questions I needed answers for.

My favorite stories: Night Shopper
Idiot Girls
Scrape
Where the Lovelight Gleams
