High: A Journey Across the Himalaya, Through Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, and China | Erika Fatland
9 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
An ambitious and magnificent new travelogue by bestselling and prize-winning author Erika Fatland (The Border and Sovietistan), on a journey along the Himalaya. The Himalaya weave through five very different countries, where the world religions of Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism are mixed with ancient shamanic religions. Countless languages and vastly different cultures live in the secluded mountain valleys. Modernity and tradition collide, while the great powers fight for influence. We have read about mountain climbers on their way up Mount Everest and about travellers on the spiritual quest for Buddhist monasteries. But how much do we know about the people living in the Himalaya? Fatland invites us into close encounters with the many peoples of the region, and at the same time takes us on a dizzying journey at altitude through incredible landscapes and dramatic, unknown world histories - all the way to the most volatile human conflicts of our times.

This #chunkstermini took me all month to read, but it was worth it. Fatland visited such interesting places, and her description of Everest base camp is one of the best I‘ve ever read. I just wish she had tied her journey together or made some conclusions at the end because after a while it kind of seemed like Himalayan resident speed dating. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Crazeedi Sounds like an interesting book! 11mo

Feeling refreshed and ready to take on the week after #HyggeHour

I‘m still working on the tagged chunkster at night, and I‘m determined to finish this month. Sunday nights have helped a lot with that goal.

Tomorrow is my early day at work so it‘s off to bed. Check out my new to me moon lamps I turn on at bedtime. Three of them came my way from various directions around Christmas, and I just love them.

TheBookHippie Oh I love them!!! 11mo

Power‘s out. Thankfully I have all my candles out for #MidwinterSolace

Aims42 Eek! Stay safe!! Looks nice and cozy right now though 🥰☺️ 12mo
Suet624 I feel like everyone across the US is losing power tonight. Vermont is about to get hit hard. 12mo

Melismatic Stay safe! Wind is whistling here in Brooklyn too! 12mo
Tamra Reminds me to stock up on candles and batteries! Somehow the kids take the flashlights and they disappear for good. 12mo
tpixie My sister‘s electricity is out in KC also. 12mo
ElizaMarie Ooo you look really prepared! Stay safe —- reminds me I should probably charge my phone 12mo
Chelsea.Poole At least you‘re prepared! It does look cozy 🕯️ 12mo
marleed I woke to a pile of snow in my neck of the woods in Kansas City. Problem was how wet and heavy it is - very difficult to clear my driveway and sidewalks. But I do have power!💡 12mo
mcctrish Thank goodness for candles and reading lights. I hope your power is off only as long as you want your cozy vibe and no longer 🙏🏻🤞🏻 12mo
AnnCrystal Stay cozy and warm. Be safe 💕🙏. 12mo
Ruthiella Great that you are prepared! But, for everyone‘s sake, I hope the power comes back soon. 🤞 (edited) 12mo
Roary47 I‘m glad you were ready. Even though I‘m sure the power out was not what you were ready for. I hope you are able to stay warm and the power comes on soon. 💛 12mo
Bookwormjillk @Aims42 @Suet624 @IndoorDame @Melismatic @Tamra @tpixie @ElizaMarie @Chelsea.Poole @marleed @AnnCrystal @Ruthiella @Roary47 Thanks! Luckily power came back overnight so it was more of a fun adventure than a dangerous outage. I‘m feeling grateful for a new roof, plenty of blankets and candles, and the people who‘s job it is to go outside in the middle of a storm and fix these things. 12mo
ElizaMarie @Bookwormjillk I lucked out and didn't have any power issues. One of my buddies had a leak in their roof and had sustained damage (which sucks), but we were good. Today has been fine (sunny) but I think we have another winter storm on the horizon -- (I am in Southern Vermont)
11mo
Bookwormjillk @ElizaMarie yes we‘re supposed to get another one on Friday (in Virginia) and then a snow storm next week. Seems like it will be a rough winter! 11mo
tpixie @Bookwormjillk oh! I‘m so thankful you got your power back relatively quickly!! And it‘s awesome that You were prepared with your candles. 💙💙💙 (edited) 11mo

We didn‘t get our snow yesterday, but the silver lining was the chance to walk in the sun today. I also got Christmas packed up, and cooked a nice Sunday dinner. Now I‘m settling in with the tagged book and a glass of wine for Hygge Hour. #HyggeHugs #HyggeHour #Naturalitsy #MidWinterSolace

Visited my local library fundraising book sale this morning. (They‘re part of the county library network but volunteer run since threatened with closure a few years ago).

All books were 50p (!) apart from the tagged, which was a whole Q9 because it was on the special ‘posh‘ table. Inordinately flattered to find a fair few of the books that I donated earlier in the week on that same table!

Mostly for hubby but top and bottom for me.

squirrelbrain I already have the Kukafka on Kindle but for 50p a hard copy is always preferable. 13mo
charl08 Nice haul! 13mo
squirrelbrain @youneverarrived - I got the Angela Marsons for you, as I recall that you really liked the first one. This is number 2. If you already got it on Kindle, don‘t worry but, if not, I‘ll pop it in the post for you. It‘s not often you see physical copies of these out in the wild; in fact, I‘m not sure I‘ve ever seen one! 13mo

BarbaraBB Did you read the Kukafka yet? It‘s so good!! 13mo
jlhammar Wow, great finds! 13mo
squirrelbrain No not yet @BarbaraBB - it‘s one of those that I‘ve been ‘meaning to get to‘ on Kindle, but I‘m sure a hard copy will give me more incentive! 13mo
Ruthiella Awesome haul! What a bargain. 👍 13mo
julesG Nice haul! 13mo
Megabooks High was so good! Nice to support your local library! 13mo
youneverarrived That‘s really thoughtful of you to get it for me, thank you! 😘 I don‘t have it I only have that bundle of books that was on offer on kindle from book 4-6 so it‘s much appreciated! ❤️ 13mo
squirrelbrain Oh good, I‘m glad you haven‘t got it! I‘ll send it sometime this week @youneverarrived - when I get chance to go to the PO. 13mo

I don‘t know if there is any travel writer I enjoy more than Fatland. Her anthropologist eye appeals to me. In The Border and Sovietstan, politics played an important role in former Soviet and adjacent areas, but in High, where she travels the Himalayas, Fatland interrogates the role religion and religious differences have played in each of the countries in and around the mountain range. I‘m definitely down for whatever she writes next!!

MallenNC I‘ve never read her, but I am intrigued. 2y
Megabooks @MallenNC I highly highly recommend her!! Her books have been consistent 4.5⭐️ and 5⭐️ reads! 2y

Soubhiville I‘ll have to check her out too. And wow, your daffodils! I‘ve been wondering if they‘d survive in TX. I may plant some this fall. 2y
rockpools Ooh, I hadn‘t heard of this. Is it new? Sovietistan was fab! 2y
Megabooks @jlhammar great!! 2y
Megabooks @Soubhiville I have no idea if they‘d do well in Texas, but they‘re certainly lovely. Thanks! 2y
Megabooks @rockpools yes, it came out in the UK last summer and in the US this winter. 2y

Even though I have yet to read Sovietstan, I had to grab this from the library, Fatland‘s most recent travelogue through the Himalayas.

Anyone else plan to check this out???

Bookwormjillk I would like to. I hope my library gets it! 2y
charl08 Ooh I didn't know she had another one. Thank you! 2y
