In the Louisiana bayou, a methodical killer with a taste for medical experimentation is hard at work completing his most harrowing crime yet, taunting the authorities who desperately try to catch up. Forensic pathologist Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopaedic knowledge of historical crimes and years of experience, she's never encountered a case she couldn't solve. Until now. As case after case lands on Wren's examination table, she is sucked into an all-consuming cat-and-mouse chase?- on the tail of a brutal murderer, getting more brazen by the day...

Thoroughly enjoyed this.
There was so much mystery around Wren and also Jeremy. Some parts of this story were bone chilling. I'm excited to read the next one!
Also, loved the interview at the end with Ash and Alaina.

Forensic pathologist, Dr. Wren Muller, is haunted by her past and a prominent serial killer. The killer goes by many names, but most predominantly The Butcher.

I enjoyed this one for the most part. For a debut novel, I think it was pretty good. There‘s some time jumps that made me feel like I missed something. I listened to the audiobook and the narrators were FANTASTIC. Overall, 3/5! #scarathlon #creepinitreal #cir

StayCurious I love when the audiobook is good 6mo

My #bookspin reveals itself pretty clearly as a first novel. The plot is mostly derivative and the dialogue can be stilted. But there‘s potential: there‘s a strong sense of place in the bayou and New Orleans scenes. Urquhart has worked in a morgue, and those scenes feel pretty realistic. If reviews are good, I might pick up a future book of hers ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found the random bits of true facts that are sprinkled throughout this book quite intriguing. The story kept me engaged and had a good amount of suspense in it. I completely didn‘t see that twist coming. When they say “jaw-dropping twist” that is accurate. While I do wish there was more of Jeremy‘s story, the book comes together well.

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes horror, mystery, and suspense.

I may be following a theme 🤔 unintentionally but two books with the butcher in the title could be seen as a pattern....🤨😳🔪

I am desperately waiting for the next Alaina Urquhart release. This book made my skin crawl from the first page to the last what a great crime book full of twisty turns. I couldn‘t put this one down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a thriller chronicling a medical examiner and a serial killer. (Don‘t understand why the main character wasn‘t a detective, seems it would fit the plot better.) Entertaining, but was a little choppy and needed a bit more character development.

I could not put this book down!! I was quickly sucked into the story and I couldn‘t stop until I knew what was going to happen. I definitely hope there will be future books to follow this one and I can‘t wait to read what‘s in store!

I enjoyed the idea of this book but like many have mentioned, the execution wasn't the greatest. I liked how the story went between the killer's pov to the forensic pathologist's pov. I also liked how this book was read by two narrators. But there were many parts that could have been developed better and the ending was anticlimactic for me. So I give this 3 ⭐️

Giving this a so-so is me being nice with this book. I've never listened to the podcast. I read the book because I'll read anything set in New Orleans. This was a hot mess though. Books that "tell" me everything instead of using words to "show" me tend to annoy me. The writing is problematic and the characters weren't developed enough for me to become invested.

TheHungryBookworms The thing that I didn't understood was the médical examiner so involved in the actual investigation? 1y
Addison_Reads @TheHungryBookworms I had no clue why that character was written that way. The Emily/Emma/Wren storyline and her also being a victim and the expert forensic pathologist? It became very confusing. 1y
TheHungryBookworms @Addison_Reads yes it was very confusing I agree 1y

I‘ve never listened to Morbid the Podcast…so my feelings are not influenced by the popular podcast. For me…this had potential…but it lacked execution. It needed more character development by far…and wide. The total cliffhanger ending also didn't work for me. But seriously, who does cliffhangers in thrillers? The narration by Sophie Amoss & Joe Knezevich was great, though.
