How to Turn Into a Bird
How to Turn Into a Bird | María José Ferrada
9 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
After years of hard work in a factory outside of Santiago, Chile, Ramón accepts a peculiar job: to look after a Coca-Cola billboard located by the highway. And it doesn't take long for Ramón to make an even more peculiar decision: to make the billboard his new home.Twelve-year-old Miguel is enchanted by his uncle's unusual living arrangement, but the neighborhood is buzzing with gossip, declaring Ramón a madman bringing shame to the community. As he visits his uncle in a perch above it all, Miguel comes to see a different perspective, and finds himself wondering what he believes--has his uncle lost his mind, as everyone says? Is madness--and the need for freedom--contagious? Or is Ramón the only one who can see things as they really are, finding a deeper meaning in a life they can't understand from the ground? When a local boy disappears, tensions erupt and forgotten memories come to the surface. And Miguel, no longer perched in the billboard with his uncle, witnesses the reality on the ground: a society that, in the name of peace, is not afraid to use violence. With sharp humor and a deep understanding of a child's mind, How to Turn Into a Bird is a powerful tale of coming of age, loss of innocence, and shifting perspectives that asks us: how far outside of our lives must we go to really see things clearly?

Also finished this book today and it was another winner. I flew through it (it isn‘t very long, but still). I loved most of the characters and enjoyed the story.

This slim, fairy tale like book is just beautiful.

I found myself going back and re-reading lines over again just to savor the beauty.

Ramon gets a job taking care of a Coca-Cola billboard and decides to just move up there and live in it.

The people on the ground, of course, think he is crazy.

A commentary on how society treats "problems" and anyone considered different.

PS - doesn't my @AardvarkBookClub bookmark look cool with my blanket?

Cinfhen Yessss ðŸ‘ðŸ»cool pairing 😎 1y

Hmmm, very contemplative this one. A quick very philosophical read about societal norms & human nature. Overall it‘s a good read, very thought provoking. âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸

Ferrada, who also writes children‘s books, had a great grasp on the child narrator of this novel but also brought in some more adult themes. I‘m really pleased that #aardvark chose some literature in translation in January!

Miguel‘s uncle Ramón has never fit in. He buries his issues in alcohol. When he gets a job taking care of the billboard above his town, he makes a nest in it and moves there. But his problems from the housing complex follow.

vlwelser You have quite a collection going. 💛 1y
Megabooks @vlwelser I‘m really liking aardvark! ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ’œ 1y

Cinfhen Actually sounds entertaining - and love your Aardvark stack 😠1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks! It was short but made an impact. I‘m reading more South American literature in translation, and I‘m really starting to get a sense for the region, which is great! 1y
vlwelser 💯 excited already to see the Feb picks. 1y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks That is great, it really is such a special I‘ll region 1y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes! I‘m all about the armchair travel this year. I‘m hoping to get in some actual travelogues as the year progresses. 1y

Christine So glad you enjoyed this one! I really did, too. I‘m rarely tempted by book subscriptions, but this Aardvark sure has some good titles… 1y
Megabooks @Christine they really have chosen some great ones. I also LOVED this other Tin House title. 1y
Christine I really liked Singer Distance, too! Well done, Aardvark. 1y

I thought this was fantastic. Not sure it‘s classified as a novella, but it‘s a slim 200ish pages with huge margins, so it‘s a quick read. Not too much happens, but the premise, tone, and character development totally worked for me. The writing is spare but so visually evocative that I kept imagining a film version as I read. I found this quite special and am so grateful that @Tin_House put it on my radar.

I‘m very excited that @AardvarkBookClub chose some literature-in-translation, so I had to jump on that! (Plus it works for #ReadingTheAmericas23 #Chile. 🤩🇨🇱) Turns out I had fomo about Factory Girls after all. What‘s everyone else thinking? #aardvark

vlwelser This one you picked looks good but I think I'm either going with The New Life or Desert Creatures. 1y
Megabooks @vlwelser Both of those looked good to me too, especially Desert Creatures, but I think I‘m going to wait on some reviews before I jump on either. 1y
Megabooks @vlwelser I just saw TNL has 4.2âï¸ after 10 reviews, which is pretty good. Very interested to see what litsy thinks! 1y
vlwelser I might stew about it for a day before I pick. I do have an extra credit but I prefer to just pick 1. That one you picked is also still in the running. I love translated fiction. Because who would bother translating it if it's crap, right? Not to be overly blunt about it or anything. 1y
Megabooks @vlwelser that is so true re: translation. Lately, I‘ve been trying to pick one of the current month and then maybe one from a past month that has had positive reviews here or the storygraph. December/January are big acquisition months for me, and I should probably have not picked an extra one here or BOTM, but I did. 🤷ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤·ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ #noselfcontrol 😂 1y

My guess for the first #Aardvark January clue!

🪜 = The MC gets a job looking after a billboard (I'm assuming he'd need a way to get up there 😂)
🥤 = It's a Coca-Cola billboard
🌆 = The birds eye view of Santiago that he gets as he makes the unusual choice to make the billboard his home.
🤫 = I'm assuming he may not have permission to live there so it's a secret? Also his nephew visits him, so he might be asked not to tell?

What do you think??

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Sounds like a fun read! And reminds me of Enchanted when they find her knocking on the billboard 🤣 1y
vlwelser It looks fun. I love your guesses. 1y

These aren't spoilers, more like a shot in the dark while I was bored. But I browsed through new-ish releases from publishers that previously partnered with #Aardvark, and here are some possibilities I found. They said they'll be releasing their emoji clues soon so it'll be interesting to see if any of these fit!

@AardvarkBookClub I know you can't confirm or deny but maybe wink if I'm close? 😂

AardvarkBookClub Ahahaha I‘m gonna leave a classic 🤷â€â™€ï¸ðŸ˜‰ 1y
