The Block Party: A Novel | Jamie Day
19 posts | 24 read | 13 to read
On the night of the annual Summer block party, the Meadowbrook community Facebook page lights up with posts reporting sirens descending on the desirable and exclusive cul-de-sac neighborhood on Alton Road. Bit by bit, the comments trickle in, some taking pleasure in their neighbors misfortune and others showing concern. The truth eventually comes out. It's not an accident, or a drowning, or a fire, as some had predicted. For the first time in forty years, there's been a murder in Meadowbrook. The residents of Alton RoadThe Fox family, the core of the neighborhood but each with secrets of their own; the Adair Family, the seemingly perfect all-American family; the Thompson Family, on the brink of an explosive divorce; The Kumars, the mysterious "new neighbors"; Brooke Bailey, the "Black Widow"; and Gus Fisher, the quirky salesman are entangled in a web of secrets and scandal unbeknownst to the outside world and even each other. Who was murdered at the block party? Who committed the murder? And why? As the night unfolds, the residents will discover that the real danger lies within their own block and nothingand no oneis ever as it seems. Propulsive and layered, THE BLOCK PARTY will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Despite the alcoholic mother (which pushes my buttons) I kept coming back to this Suspense/Thriller. While at times I felt distractions were thrown in, they all tie in at the end and the pace increases as you come to the end of all the twists and turns. A definite thumbs up.

4✨ There is quite a few characters, but only two POVs that we follow. We also start at present day and go back in time. This helps you ask the question: “What the heck happened?” It is really fast paced and even though it jumps from time and characters it‘s pretty easy to follow and helps to uncover the mysteries as it goes. Pretty dark and twisty on a few things, there is one mystery uncovered that is really messed up. #FableBR

A wild ride! In an elite neighborhood, the residents of a cul-de-sac have an annual Memorial Day block party (the timeline spans from one block party to the following year‘s block party) and a murder has been committed. The reader doesn‘t know who the victim is (which I love!) or who among the cast of characters could be a killer. This is very gossip-y and totally rich people behaving very badly, but so entertaining! The last 1/4 is very twisty!

This was an okay mystery. I liked that it started with the murder, but you don‘t know who the victim is, drawing me into the story before jumping back one year. The story moved too slow for my tastes however, and I found a lot of the characters to be rather annoying. The audiobook was one where I could take it or leave it. Overall the pace was too slow, there wasn‘t enough inflection and some of the characters were presented as very whiny.

3.5⭐️ This was a very entertaining read. It was easy to follow and it had a couple of interesting plot twists (I figured out one lol), but I gasped out loud at the other.

I will definitely keep an eye out for this author.

This was a soft pick for me. I love a juicy neighborhood drama but it didn‘t really stand out from other similar books. It was hard to keep the various characters in order (there were quite a few) and they were all kind of unlikeable but to be honest I never really need to like all the characters to enjoy the book. It did keep me entertained on my long drive out of town this last week so I give it that. 🌟🌟🌟

Ok I do love gossipy books about neighborhood drama, but this one fell short for me. The characters felt flat and tropey, the twists were predictable, and it was just missing, idk, heart? It seemed like the author cared as little about the characters as I did. But it seems like mine is the minority opinion on this one so ymmv!

Tara Side note in the comments because it‘s a little snarky: which established male author is trying to break into the domestic suspense market by hiding behind a gender neutral pseudonym? This book‘s marketing/blurbage is too good for an author with zero internet presence. 1y

Started this book on our honeymoon in Lake Como & finished it early this morning, taking advantage of jet lag. The Block Party is the perfect summer read with plenty of gossip, drama, deceit, and murder. The relationships and dynamic of the neighborhood are multidimensional and it mostly feels like a women‘s fiction novel for the majority of the novel. But the last quarter is full of jaw-dropping revelations. I loved this start to finish!

Amor4Libros I have this on my TBR and your review just helped me decide what I‘m starting next! 🙂 Also, congrats on your wedding! ❤️ (edited) 1y

This was pretty good. I like the dynamics of neighborhood dramas and I really liked the blurbs in between that depicted a neighborhood chat group. I found it a little slow but there was a very interesting twist in the end. Overall, it didn't knock my socks off but it kept me interested. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

The Block Party is filled with dysfunction and drama. So much drama. If you were a fan of Desperate Housewives you will enjoy this story but unlike the housewives, I have no desire to be friends with anyone on Alton Road but they will probably stick in my brain for a while.

Two perspectives (mother and teenaged daughter), an elite, wealthy cul-de-sac, and a year-long view (from one Memorial Day Block Party to the next) of the secrets and facades around the question, “How well do we really know our neighbors?”, and who might be capable of murder? This one is a wild ride, folks. With a cast of roughly a dozen (yes, that‘s a lot, but I had no trouble with who‘s who), this is a suspenseful, twisty, page-turner that 🔻

robinb reminded me a little of the tv show “Desperate Housewives”. If you‘re looking for a well-written, engaging Peyton Place of a book, this one should fit the bill. Oh, and the newsletter commentary from the neighbors living NEAR the cul-de-sac…hilarious. Recommended. 4.5/5⭐️ 1y

At its core, this is a domestic, contemporary drama focusing on an elite neighborhood that is full of family, friends, & secrets. The drama itself is juicy & the players are morally gray.

Not everything is as it seems on Alton Road & it all escalates at their annual Memorial Day block party. When the secrets come out & the repercussions appear, who will be make it out unscathed?

This was an awesome but creepy book about a neighborhood gone crazy with its occupants all guarding secrets! Revenge, retribution, infidelity, drugs…you name it and it‘s here! Read it and hug the neighbors you love!
