Unbowed: A Memoir | Wangari Maathai
19 posts | 12 read | 40 to read
In Unbowed, Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai recounts her extraordinary journey from her childhood in rural Kenya to the world stage. When Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, she began a vital poor peoples environmental movement, focused on the empowerment of women, that soon spread across Africa. Persevering through run-ins with the Kenyan government and personal losses, and jailed and beaten on numerous occasions, Maathai continued to fight tirelessly to save Kenyas forests and to restore democracy to her beloved country. Infused with her unique luminosity of spirit, Wangari Maathais remarkable story of courage, faith, and the power of persistence is destined to inspire generations to come. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I especially loved all the quotes in this that hinted at the reasons behind Wangari‘s strength, determination and resilience.

I loved both the #auldlangspine books I read from @Chelsea.Poole ‘s list in January, and I‘ve started 2 more titles for February.

@monalyisha Thank you for organizing our lists and this giveaway! You did a killer job as usual! Please tell Moxie I‘d love a chance to win Lost and Found from your list.

monalyisha This reminds me of a discussion I just listened to between Maggie Smith & Katherine May! Hers is the only podcast I listen to. Linking to the episode here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5rJtjEsYYMuOy6NtMCFT37?si=ef1c4IDoQwG79k039LmwX... 3mo
monalyisha And thanks for participating in #AuldLangSpine! Moxie is taking notes. 😉 3mo
IndoorDame @monalyisha what a great conversation! Thanks for the link! Maggie Smith‘s poetry hadn‘t been on my radar, but now I‘m really interested to pick up one of her books. 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Wangari is such an inspiration to me ♥️ I'm so glad you picked this title from the list! I loved your list as well. I've finished 4 (American Sunrise, Becoming Eve, Foster, and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy) in January and I hope to read at least 3 others this year! 3mo

I finished my first #AuldLangSpine book this morning. Thank you for choosing this one for me @Chelsea.Poole ! I‘d read children‘s books about her before, but the depth of her achievements, and of her indomitable spirit didn‘t really sink in until I read this more substantial account of her life. I‘m completely in awe, and she‘s a welcome addition to the list of women I admire and would like to emulate. @monalyisha

Chelsea.Poole So glad this worked for you. I agree, she‘s absolutely amazing!! 4mo

What a wonderful way to approach the world! …Is this what gives her the unspoiled optimism I‘ve been admiring so much despite having a life that would leave many people jaded? #AuldLangSpine

TheBookHippie 🙃♥️ I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! 4mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I just got to the part where the Green Belt Movement gets mentioned for the first time, but in the last chapter she blew past several lifetimes worth of historical achievements that will clearly change the future for women in Kenya without even blinking. I‘m already blown away by her drive and personality! ♥️ 4mo

Starting my first #AuldLangSpine read of the year! Cedric is “helping” because apparently library books always smell more interesting. I also downloaded the audio of this one from Hoopla, so I‘m not sure if I‘ll end up reading or listening. @Chelsea.Poole @monalyisha

I‘ve joined a new “literary club” where I was assigned this memoir. Why didn‘t I know the change-maker Wangari Maathai before this?! Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her conservation efforts by founding the Green Belt Movement, feminist activism, and peaceful demonstrations leading to bringing democratic change in Kenya. Wangari was intelligent, inspiring, but so down to earth and I loved learning about her life in her own words.

rockpools For some reason I‘ve seen lots of children‘s picture books about her, but hadn‘t realised she had ‘grown-up‘ books out there! Stacking (although I possibly stacked a different version 7 years ago 😯). She sounds fascinating! 5mo
Chelsea.Poole @rockpools yes! There are so many children's books about her! I read several after finishing Unbowed. Many have excellent illustrations.

Soccer was sooo sweaty tonight….I could barely concentrate to read. The soccer gods smiled upon me tonight otherwise though: both boys had practice in the same location, back to back ⚽️

Loving this memoir already!

An incredibly interesting read, Maathai is an exceptional person. This memoir takes you through her childhood, her first marriage, her creation of the Green Belt movement, into parliament and winning the Nobel Peace Prize. There is so much to discuss after reading, I have so many? about her marriage & it's end, her relentless optimism and forward thinking, she is an inspiration. This book does a great job laying out her life.

#FOODANDLIT KENYA
In the events of THE QUEENS death there are people not grieving and it‘s a reminder that two things can be true at the same time, what I hold is I loved The Queen -she arriving to a colonizing regime did not fall into fascism, but democracy and love and duty-peace and knew the affects of colonialism. This book which I had for Kenya before her death is being recommended everywhere now as a must read to understand these truths.

1. My parents had a name picked for me that was a combination of their first names but when I was born they said I didn‘t look like that name. They named me after my paternal great grandmother and my middle name comes from my maternal grandfather.

2. Thankful this week that I was able exercise my right to vote this year.

I‘m really bad at Not-Buying-Books. So bad that I bought the tagged book for the second time today. And I was so excited at it being only $3 that I put another one back on the shelf. :( But I‘ve been meaning to check out our local free little libraries anyways so this will go to one of those I guess.

Texreader That‘s something I‘d do!! 5y

I just finished the book and really enjoyed it. Wangari is someone we all should know. She founded The Green Belt Movement in Kenya and won the Noble Peace Prize among various other awards. Her efforts have been replicated globally. One thing I like is that she is an example of a person that contributed so much without coming from wealth. She overcame so many obstacles. This is a great book to read in preparation for Earth Day. Highly recommend it

Wangari Maathai was a Nobel laureate for environmental activism & her push for democracy. She led the Green Belt Movement, focused on planting trees, envt'l conservation, & women's rights in Kenya & later as a pan-African movement. She led pro-democracy efforts against the Kenyan govt when it gave public land to its supporters & led a hunger strike when it planned to build a tower in Uhuru Park. 🙌🏿
