The Berlin Letters
The Berlin Letters: A Cold War Novel | Katherine Reay
12 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
Near the end of the Cold War, a CIA code breaker discovers a symbol she recognizes from her childhood, which launches her across the world to the heart of Berlin just before the wall comes tumbling down. November 1989--After finding a secret cache of letters with intelligence buried in the text, CIA cryptographer Luisa Voekler learns that not only is her father alive but he is languishing in an East German Stasi jail. After piecing together the letters with a series of articles her grandfather saved, Luisa seeks out journalists Bran Bishop and Daniel Rudd. They send her to the CIA, to Andrew Cademan--her boss. Luisa confronts Cademan and learns that nothing is a coincidence, but he will not help her free her father. So she takes matters into her own hands, empties her bank account, and flies to West Berlin. As the adrenaline wears off and she recognizes she has no idea how to proceed, Luisa is both relieved and surprised when a friend shows up with contacts and a rudimentary plan to sneak her across the wall. Alternating storylines between Luisa and her father, The Berlin Letters shows the tumultuous early days of the wall, bringing Berlin, the epicenter of the Cold War, to life while also sharing one family's journey through secrets, lies, and division to love, freedom, and reconciliation.

Really liked this book about a woman trying to get her long lost father out of jail in East Berlin. The last 50 pages were really gripping as she travels right into the heart of the Stasi before the wall came down. So interesting to read about the part that punk rock bands played during that time.

The emotional depth of this tagged novel is the reason I‘ve not reviewed it.I needed time to process. This historical fiction is told in both narrative & letters, covering the time span from the erecting of the Berlin Wall to its fall.Luisa Voekler, born in East Berlin, but now an agent for the CIA in the U.S.,works decoding World War II messages. When the Wall had just wire,Luisa‘s mother threw her over the wire to her parents in West Berlin.⬇️

kspenmoll ⬆️ As a child, her grandfather prepped her for this work by providing coded puzzles for her to solve & scavenger hunts. After his death, Louisa discovered a secret cachet of letters written by her father, whom she thought was dead. Her grandfather had hidden these letters in a place where she would eventually find them.Luisa goes rogue from the CIA,& travels to East Berlin determined to rescue her father from an East Berlin jail. kspenmoll This novel also impressed upon me the role that East Berlin punk rock bands had in the fall of the Wall as they were allowed to travel into West Berlin to play in concerts. They embedded lyrics crying for freedom, human rights, etc. their music was so loud the lyrics were list on East Berlin officials. These scenes were heart warming- all based on truth. https://bibliolore.org/tag/punk-rock/ 2mo
Cuilin Well that‘s right up my alley. Stacked. I think I will add Cold War period to #BookedInTime. 2mo

Absolutely couldn‘t put it down. I admit have a personal attachment to the setting, having been an exchange student in West Berlin before the wall came down.

Interesting combo! My June #bookspin is a historical fiction carry-over from last month; #doublespin is a middle grade horror story!
