The Plague Charmer
The Plague Charmer | Karen Maitland
19 posts | 11 read | 15 to read
The Plague Charmer, by Karen Maitland, author of the much-loved Company of Liars - her first novel of the plague - will chill and delight fans of Kate Mosse and C.J. Sansom in equal measure. 'A compelling blend of historical grit and supernatural twists' Daily Mail Riddle me this: I have a price, but it cannot be paid in gold or silver. 1361. Porlock Weir, Exmoor. Thirteen years after the Great Pestilence, plague strikes England for the second time. Sara, a packhorse man's wife, remembers the horror all too well and fears for safety of her children. Only a dark-haired stranger offers help, but at a price that no one will pay. Fear gives way to hysteria in the village and, when the sickness spreads to her family, Sara finds herself locked away by neighbours she has trusted for years. And, as her husband - and then others - begin to die, the cost no longer seems so unthinkable. The price that I ask, from one willing to pay... A human life.

How did I end up with three creepy thrillers on the go at the same time?
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

The Plague Charmer by Karen Maitland: a very readable medieval thriller I had picked up randomly at some point (might have been a 3 for 2 offer).
Judgment is Stone by Ruth Rendell: from my lifetime reading list. I'll probably finish it tonight.
The Circle by Dave Eggers: another #lifetimereading nominee and #booked2019 #socialmedia read.

They say despair is a terrible thing, but hope is worse: it keeps you shackled for ever, like a dog in a wheel, always running, but never able to go anywhere, save round and round.
Grim but beautiful, I loved this. Have you read it?

'I will have no part of your dark magic,' the priest growled.I do not take help from witches and sorcerers.' She shrugged. 'As you please. But the creatures that stalk the nights are masters of the dark. You cannot fight a raging storm armed with only with a candle flame.'

The sky, the earth, the sea had melted into one formless black mass. No birds cried above us. No animals called from the hill. The only sound was the desolate moan of the wind. It was as if we were ghosts wandering through the dark, icy caverns of the dead.

Reading in a park while waiting for a friend. Very nice weather today. Sadly the people on the next bench have started smoking weed and the smell is quite intence. 🌲🌱

Starting a new Karen Maitland medieval mystery tonight. I always love her books, they always feel familiar. Being a Celtic student I don't much like the first line, what is the land of Celts anyway? Could you be a bit more specific? I guess college does ruin some things for you 😂😂

Never the less I am looking forward to diving in to this one!

Mehso-so

Karen Maitland's latest historical novel is another well researched story set amid the Black Death that incorporates elements of superstition, legend and magical realism but it reminded me a lot of THE COMPANY OF LIARS and the wide characters made it difficult to empathise with any one character's plight so that ultimately I found it difficult to engage with it enough to care about the story.

**This book was reviewed via Netgalley**

This story was well-written and quite engaging. Maitland weaves the stories of several different people around one another. In a rather daring move, she chose to switch perspective between characters, so some are first person, others third person. It takes a rare talent to handle that and end up with something good, let alone great.

🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻 Highly recommended

Bit of craic: You are trapped in an elevator with the main chatting of the book you last finished. Who are you trapped with and what did you talk about? - I'm trapped with a dwarf who is giving me riddles. 😳#bitoffun

britt_brooke I'm trapped with a famous opera singer who will not let me forget for a second that she's a famous opera singer. And diva. Between the incessant singing and self-praise, I can't get a word in edgewise. 8y
Onioons Susan, a new first year student in an English University. She was a bit miffed about the institutional chauvinism she has encountered in college & about to tackle it head-on! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Im chatting up a Russian teen who keeps showing me a boyhood photo of himself in leopard print bikini bottoms. 8y

[DELETED] 2232195534 I'm trapped with a sea tide and current specialist and he's telling me how he calculated the pathways of the feet that have washed up on Scottish shores...😳 8y
Amandajoy An immigrant who's having issues getting his green card. He doesn't want anyone to know his status, so don't talk about that. But he has wonderful insights on life & it's a great conversation. 8y
Merethebookgal I'm trapped with Hercule Poirot, which is cool, because I'm sure we could come up with a bunch of things to talk about 😉 8y
SusanInTiburon A 17-year-old Scots tenant farmer who killed three of his neighbors. He's polite and intelligent, but he has no interest in answering my questions about his trial strategy. 8y
NCNY I'm trapped on a small luxury cruise ship with the lady in cabin 9 trying to figure out what the heck happened to the lady in cabin 10. 8y

Mehso-so

If you like historical fiction and fantasy you probably really like it. I did enjoy the book and was fascinated by it inbetween and it was well written. I liked the different angels in the story. but it did not grab me as an unputdownable and therefore a so-so for me.

Absolutely loving The Plague Charmer. It's full of strong, well realised characters, and the storyline is really good. Hoping to see the links between the Porlock Manor and the Porlock Weir folks become more apparent though - there's got to be more than simple contrasts at play here!

Anyone else who likes taking notes of the book you are reading? I love taking notes and writing down a few things. Quite interesting if you go back to a book you have read about 6 months ago #thoughtswhilereading
