Saturday evening with Agatha Christie 💜♥️

A much-needed reread to get me out of a reading slump. Possibly my second-favourite Poirot (The Mysterious Affair at Styles takes top prize).
Favourite line:
Hastings: I never notice what people are wearing.
Poirot: Maybe you should join a nudist colony.
😆😂😳

LauraBrook 😂😂 I don‘t remember that quip! I do love Poirot. 1mo

I was a huge fan of Agatha Christie's . . . when I was around 8 years old. I'm not sure how well her books have held up. This was fine, but it's really short and not that exciting. Still, read it if you've never read AC. I reread this because I'm moderating discussion on it for one of my online reading groups. I'll supplement the discussion with bits from Murder Ink, Murderess Ink, and The Bedside Bathtub & Armchair Companion to Agatha Christie.

I listened to these two back-to-back in my continuing quest to read all of Christie‘s cannon. The ABC Murders was excellent—Cards on the Table not so much. Sometimes the ancillary murders just don‘t make sense.

(Day 10 - #Stop)

*Pictured above are some of the actors who played Agatha Christie‘s Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. As we know, it is Poirot‘s job to STOP murders, or at least, to nab them...
1. Tony Randall; 2. Alfred Molina; 3. David Suchet; 4. Kenneth Branagh; 5. John Malkovich; 6. Orson Welles; 7. Austin Trevor; 8. John Moffatt; 9. Albert Finney; 10. Peter Ustinov; 11. Ian Holm; and 12. The lady herself, Dame Agatha Christie.

Poirot encounters a serial killer working his way through the alphabet, and is given advance warning ahead of each crime. But as each victim seems to be unconnected, how can he stop the next one? I‘m not sure what it says about me that I find murder mysteries to be palate cleansers in between other books, but an Agatha Christie novel is perfect.

Poirot is on a case where victims are hunted in alphabetical order, and the murderer taunts the detective throughout the ordeal. Permit my cliche, but nothing is as it seems. She isn‘t called “The Queen of Mystery” for nothing! This is my fifth Christie book and I loved it - I didn‘t see the ending coming.

A few of my favorite mystery authors. Although in contemporary mysteries the method of murder is often more memorable than the actual culprit, in the case of Dame Agatha it is all about fiendishly clever twists. The tagged book is one of my favorites & is unique largely for the killer's method of selecting victims.

It‘s been many years since I read this, I hardly remember whodunnit and why. Read this to prepare myself before watching John Malkovich‘s portrayal of Poirot. A classic Christie story...though it‘s not difficult to figure out who did it, the genius of Christie‘s storytelling made this a satisfying read. 👍

I enjoyed the reread of this Christie classic! It has been so many years that I didn‘t remember much of the plot. Poirot shows that he is neither “gaga” nor “past his prime”, while Hastings is gallantly romantic and hopelessly befuddled, as usual.

Thank you so much for this lovely copy @Kappadeemom !

I just finished watching this on Prime. Anyone else watch it? Thoughts? This is one of my favorite books by Dame Agatha & this version is by far the darkest Poirot I've seen. The book itself is rather dark but the witty banter between Poirot & Hastings definitely serves as a stress relief. Hastings is not in the miniseries; once I became used to the tone of this adaptation my only complaint is not casting Hastings. It's worth watching & 👇

vivastory distinguishes itself from other Christie adaptations. Although it could benefit from a sympathetic relationship to balance the dark tone, this is a Poirot for Brexit Britain/Trump America. 10mo

So I just watched Amazon Prime‘s adaptation of The ABC Murders. Man am I annoyed by it!!

A couple of things without spoiling it, Hastings isn‘t in it at all. Inspector Japp is barely in it. I‘m assuming so they could have Ron Weasley in it.

Also, they tried to make it seem like Poirot wasn‘t truthful about his past (not hinted in any book!!)

I haven‘t watched the other Amazon prime adaptations, but I did not care for this one. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

LiteraryinLititz Oh no! That sounds super frustrating because I love Hastings and Japp. I wonder why they didn‘t stay true to the book? 10mo

The first time I read this, I must have been 13 or 14. Reading this now took me back to those happy days where if the homework & chores were done, you could legit spend hours gobbling up books only to show up at mealtimes to gobble up the food. Ah, the good life. As for the book: one of those brisk, fast-paced, noir-esque Poirot mysteries that is so satisfying. The dark underbelly of depression-era urban British life haunts the book. Very good.

I LOVE Agatha Christie beyond words. The easy reading and way of bringing the reader into the puzzle is something I'm not seeing as much in modern murder mysteries. That's not to say her books are not without fault, but she's one of the best selling authors of all time for a reason!

The ABC Murders is book 13 from the Hercule Poirot series, and has Captain Hastings as narrator (it's not always him)

#classic #murdermystery

MerinEliza Yuss! I love Agatha Christie too! Do you like Poirot or Marple? 1y
Regi_C @MerinEliza I'm totally a Poroit girl, but I'm starting to really warm up to Marple! You? 1y
MerinEliza Yes, Poirot all the way! I love everything about him. I like Marple, but lets face is, she's no Poirot. Also, ABC murders is one of my favourites. Have you seen the movie? For Murder on The Orient Express. 1y

Regi_C @MerinEliza agreed! And I've seen every version of orient express! I'm still not sure how I feel about the most recent one 1y
MerinEliza I haven't seen the latest one yet. But the one with David Suchet is awesome. 1y
Regi_C @MerinEliza I think the latest one is worth it just for the modern lens. The David Suchet one and the entire series will always be number one in my heart. I cried at the series finale, haha 1y
MerinEliza I'll have to find the latest one and see it. Yeah David Suchet one is so great. He knows how to portray Poirot's feelings and inner conflicts well. I'm yet to see the finale because I haven't finished reading the series because I'm reading them slowly. I don't want the series to end soon. So slow reading them. Now that I heard your cried I'm going to read even slower. 1y
Regi_C @MerinEliza don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic and perfectly Poirot way to finish, but it was still a whole journey coming to an end. I get quite emotional about it! It was the first series I ever was invested in 1y
MerinEliza Yeah I understood what you meant. By watching the series I meant that I dont want the series to end. Glad you enjoyed it. 1y

LiteraryinLititz @rabbitprincess Yeah, that was my instinct too. Suchet is the definitive Poirot! Not even Kenneth Branagh, who I like, came close for me. 1y
rabbitprincess @LiteraryinLititz I couldn't get on board with Branagh because of the moustache 😖 1y

Pickpick

This is the fourth, & funniest, Christie book I have read. Poirot & Hastings have quickly joined my favorite fictional duos of all time. Their banter in this one is priceless. Poirot exerts his grey cells, in Christie's fiendishly clever book.

saresmoore Great review, as always! I‘ve yet to read anything by Christie and I suppose it‘s time to remedy that. 2y
vivastory @saresmoore Thanks, Sara! All 4 (ABC, Murder on Orient Express, And then there Were None & Murder of Roger Akyroyd) that I've read by her I've absolutely loved. 2y

Interesting to know how he'd have dealt with the letter X..

LeahBergen Death by xylophone? 🤔 2y
Sarah83 Death by X-ray? 😊 2y
rohit-sawant Maybe impaling someone on a Xmas tree and whispering "This is my design" while lighting the candles jutting out of eye sockets. 2y
Moray_Reads I always imagine the murder getting more and more worried as the difficult letters get closer 😆 2y
