Clara Reads Proust
Clara Reads Proust | Stephane Carlier
7 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
A tender and witty coming-of-age story about the power of literature to inspire new beginnings, peppered with a cast of quirky characters and a unique heroine. Clara is a hairdresser at Cindy Coiffure, a sleepy French salon with an identity crisis. Her relationship is fizzling out. Her tanoholic boss Madame Habib worships Jacques Chirac and talks longingly of her days in Paris. The highlight of the week was when the dishy technician came to repair the display cabinet. And now Madame Lévy-Leroyer wants to go blonde. Clara can't help but wonder if there's more to life . . . Everything changes when a customer leaves behind the first volume of In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. As Clara reads, she discovers a whole new world, leading her to strike up an unexpected friendship. And slowly but surely, she will work out who she wants to be.

This short novel was quiet, thoughtful, strange, and relaxing. It follows a young woman who is trying to find her place in the world and stumbles upon the works of Proust and they change her life. I really enjoyed it! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

What a beautiful little book. Charming, thoughtful, and so very, very French. Clara, a young hairdresser, falls in love with Proust, with words, and with the way a beautifully written book can transport you.

You do not have to have read Proust to fall in love with this novella (lord knows I haven't). Carlier manages to evoke a love for the text without ever judging those who haven't read it.

TheKidUpstairs I'd venture a guess most Littens can relate to Clara's passion and her reading journey. This sort but impactful read gave me everything I was hoping for but never got when I read The Novel Bookstore with #EuropaCollective. Pure love of wonderful literature, without the unnecessary snobbishness. 4mo

Excited that Clara Reads Proust made it into Anne Bogel‘s Summer Reading Guide! It‘s such a lovely book about the power of reading. A young woman who‘s feeling a bit stuck in her romantic relationship and her hairdressing career picks up Proust‘s first novel, Swann‘s Way, and it changes everything…

Graciouswarriorprincess I miss her reading guide. I just can‘t afford to subscribe to it but I loved it when it came out. 4mo

I love unexpected connections.

Just finished All Fours for #CampLitsy24 and the epigraph of my next read seems like it could be used for the July as well!

Completed my June #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin. Loved Clara, and tolerated The Writing Retreat. I had high hopes but it just fell flat for me. Better luck next month! #BookSpinBingo

AnneCecilie Clare sounds interesting, especially since I‘ve read Proust. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I have The Writing Retreat on my shelf, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews. 5mo
LeslieO @AnneCecilie You would probably enjoy it even more. I did read Swann‘s Way in college but I remember nothing! 5mo
