I Saw Her That Night
I Saw Her That Night | Drago Jancar
12 posts | 4 read | 20 to read
"I Saw Her That Night," a love story in time of war, is a novel about a few years in the life and mysterious disappearance of Veronika Zarnik, a young bourgeois woman from Ljubljana, sucked into the whirlwind of a turbulent period in history. We follow her story from the perspective of five different characters, who also talk about themselves, as well as the troubled Slovenian times before and during World War II; times that swallowed, like a Moloch, not only the people of various beliefs involved in historical events, but also those who lived on the fringes of tumultuous events, which they did not even fully comprehend they only wanted to live. But only to live was an illusion: it was a time when, even under the seemingly safe and idyllic shelter of a manor house in Slovenia, it was impossible to avoid the rushing train of violence. Drago Jan ar won both the Best Foreign Book Prize (Prix du meilleur livre etranger) and The Kresnik Award for "I Saw Her That Night." Often described as "the seismologist of a chaotic history," the celebrated Slovenian novelist has received a number of other honors, including the European Prize for Literature (Prix Europeen de Litterature)."

Fun fact: the wonderful @Simona gifted me this book as part of my first ever Litsy swap, almost 5 years ago.

I loved the structure: 5 different narrators relate their experiences with an unconventional wealthy woman in Slovenia during WWII. It‘s a love story of sorts and a war story for sure, and the way it‘s written ratchets up the dread and sadness as it goes. The story was based on real events, so I also did some researching.🙁

I adore Drago Jancar. I adore him. I can only read him once every few years, though, because his stories send me into a tailspin. This one is really powerful, and I had no idea which way was up when I finished it. The story is set in Slovenia during WWII. It is told from the perspectives of five different narrators. I do not have an explanation for how Jancar makes the story feel so specific and universal simultaneously.

Mehso-so

A Slovenian book about a woman, Veronica, who disappears mysteriously. Five characters tells the story of Veronica, and their own lives. It‘s set around the time of the Second World War. No one can escape the bad times, not even if you‘re in a manor far away from the action. Not a memorable story to me, sadly. Might be that Second World War fiction is just an overused subject. #Slovenia #readingtheworld

@Simona I didn't want to give anything away in my review but I wanted to let you know what I thought about the book as far as Slovenia's history. I felt like I got a history lesson along with a wonderful story. But it was so heartbreaking! I cannot imagine what it must have been like to live through that time!! I was reminded of "Innocence; or Murder on Steep Street" by Heda Margolius Kovaly.

Simona This is the dark side in our history... as in every communist country. Spouses Hribar was a real persons and ground for this story are in testimony from maid in the castle Strmol. Last year, they found their remains (on the skeleton were visible remnants of torture and maltreatment) and after 71 years was a decent burial. 8y
Theresa @Simona Yes, I'm interested! I read this article + a few others I found on the Internet. I didn't realize the story was based on real people. Knowing that & learning about some of the aspects of the real people that the author included in the book makes the book so much more powerful. And devastating. 8y

Set in the mid-1940s Slovenia during & after WWII, this is a story about the disappearance of Veronika, told from the POV of 5 people who knew her. I don't want to say any more because I don't want to spoil anything. Although parts of the story are difficult, this book is so good. Thank you, @Simona for making me aware of it.

Simona I'm glad that you like it. 8y

I thought I couldn't participate in the #readathon tomorrow because I have plans that'll keep me away from reading for about 4 hours, but then I read that you only have to commit to a minimum of 1 hour. So I thought, why not & signed up. If nothing else, it'll be a teaser for the next one! Here's my hard copy stack. Also have some ebooks lined up.

Simona See you on #readathon 👍😁 8y
PurpleyPumpkin Ha, I didn't realize that! I'm in the same boat as you as I'm working tomorrow. But I'm sure I can squeeze an hour in. Maybe I'll sign up as well! 8y
Theresa @PurpleyPumpkin I just saw it today. Their website also said if you sign up at the last minute they may not get you on some sort of list. (I don't remember the details.) I thought it was worth that risk to try it out. 8y

Theresa @Simona I finally started this. I'm about 25% in & love it so far. Thank you for the recommendation!! 8y
Simona @Theresa Glad to hear that. What makes this story remarkable - it is written by real events. Looking forward for your review because I'm interested in how someone who isn't familiar with our recent history understands these events. No pressure 😉 8y

My favorite book by Slovenian author. The main topics are war (WW II) and love. It's beautifully written novel about the complicated parts of Slovenian history based on true events which are still taboos after 71 years.
