What the Dead Know
What the Dead Know | Laura Lippman
Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Whoor whatcould have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness? Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been? Why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn't a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead enda dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household. In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, there is only one person who dares to be skeptical of a woman who wants to claim the identity of one Bethany sister without revealing the fate of the other. Will he be able to discover the truth?

1. In addition to the 21 books I plan to #readordonate I want to #readorbail with the 8 e-books that were on my Goodreads “currently reading” tag at the end of 2023. Some have been there way too long, as with the tagged book.

I took this past week off work for a staycation and ended up spending a lot of my time listening to Laura Lippman audiobooks and doing jigsaw puzzles. Not a bad way to spend a week!

This is one of those books you listen to/read if you want something entertaining to pass the time but nothing that is overly tricky to follow.

What happened to those two sisters who disappeared from a mall thirty years ago? We may find out when a woman involved in a car accident claims to be one of the sisters.

A decent twist but I must say I saw it coming. I did appreciate the storytelling. Overall entertaining!

Susanita This was “inspired“ by a local story. In a weird coincidence, just as I was starting to read the book, the story came back to life, so I had to put it down for a while. I should get back into it I guess. 4y

Another finished audiobook! This one was good, but not exactly great. It leans more on the side of drama, than it does suspense, and I think I was just looking for something a little different.

KT1432 I feel that way about my current read/listen, The Au Pair! 5y

1. Hmmm.....I‘ve made some progress potty-training my parrot! It‘s been a fine week, but nothing too exciting.
2. I have one younger sister.
3. I do not have any living grandparents. I knew 3 of the 4 and was very close to one.
4. I am obsessively into genealogy! I‘ve done DNA, I manage the DNA kits of many family members and I spend time on it every day.
5. EST! 🕰

I started this yesterday. Lots of twists and turns. Who is she? Is she lying ? Is she one of the missing two girls from 30 years ago?

I can‘t really say this book kept me entertained, or even interested really? Most of it was pretty predictable and it felt about 100 pages too long. #LitsyReadingChallenge #published2007 @jessica

I listened to this on audio, and I thought it was just okay. It was really unrealistic.

It's been raining forever, but we got a break today with some glorious sunshine so I picked this for an easy poolside read. It was just OK over all, with the story meandering a bit too much for me.

Most of her books are #setnearwhereilive and this one was inspired by a real life story. https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB117819908221590891 Usually I zip through her books, but I'm finding this one to be a bit of a chore, perhaps because I remember the playing out of the actual story back in the day. There's also some unfortunate "closure" more recently that makes this a little creepy. #riotgrams

erinreads I've read a couple of her books now and only initially picked her up because of the Maryland connection! Also, its wild that it took nearly 40 years to break this case! 7y
Susanita @erinreads I'm glad they finally got the guy and he's going to trial this fall. 7y

I did not enjoy reading this book. In fact, I found that it was quite a chore, trudging through the storyline. I found the characters to be completely without depth and self-absorbed, making it extremely difficult to get to know and like them. It was curiosity rather than empathy that made me even finish the book. I really wanted it to be good - the subject was interesting - but in the end, it didn't hold my attention.
