We Are Water LP
We Are Water LP: A Novel | Wally Lamb
We Are Water is a disquieting and ultimately uplifting novel about a marriage, a family, and human resilience in the face of tragedy, from Wally Lamb, the New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed and I Know This Much Is True. After 27 years of marriage and three children, Anna Ohwife, mother, outsider artisthas fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her success. They plan to wed in the Oh familys hometown of Three Rivers in Connecticut. But the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandoras Box of toxic secretsdark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs lives. We Are Water is a layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohsnonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. It is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art. With humor and compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience and the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

I‘ve read and enjoyed several of his others, but not this one. Has anyone read it?

I couldn‘t stand this book, or the audio book. His editor must have bailed, too.

Heavy subject matter; TW for sexual assault/abuse, suicide, and child abuse

Despite the heaviness of the book (both figuratively and literally), I really enjoyed it and looked forward to the way Lamb tied in each of the characters to each other. I looked forward to picking up the book again to continue reading it.

🚥 I‘m not going to lie. This is a very difficult book to read. It contains child sexual abuse, child battery, explicit sex, racial violence, and more.

Meet the Oh family—nonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. And they are all very screwed up.

Wally Lamb writes with such compassion and empathy.

Lucky that #LetsTravelJuly meant the grandchildren and their parents traveled to us this time. Spent a lot of time on the #water. This pic of sunset from July 4, waiting for fireworks to begin. Tagged book from Wally Lamb is on my list to re-read some day. Love all his books. @OriginalCyn620 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Wally Lamb's books are difficult to review -- they are sprawling and intricate and layered. This is about marriage and family, told through the alternating voices of the Oh family: Annie, an artist; Orion, her psychologist ex-husband; and their 3 children. But it's also about gay rights, and social issues, and class disparities, and societal changes. I have a high bar for Lamb's books. I liked this one, but I didn't love it.

I'm really torn on this book. Some parts I loved and some I hated.... part of me will never love another of his books as I did I Know This Much is True.

Read More Books... Drink More Beer... Back to work tomorrow 😔

Christine Mmm, Leinie‘s shandy - the nectar of my homeland. 😋🍺🍋 6y
JenReadsAlot @Christine I love Leinie's - I live in WI 😊 6y
Christine Yay!! The shandy is so yummy and refreshing - we can get it here in CA where I now live, but I was still way too excited when, on a recent road trip to WI, our hotel in Green Bay had it on tap in the lobby for free at happy hour - only in Wisconsin! ❤️ (We had to load up our minivan with New Glarus while there, too. 😉) 6y

Boy... What a book. I absolutely love Wally Lamb, he is becoming one of my favorite authors, and this book is awesome. Lamb has a talent of making you root for imperfect, flawed, sometimes highly unlikable characters. I listened to this one as an audiobook and it's so worth it, especially since Lamb is doing the voice of Orion Oh himself. My favorite Lamb book remains "I know this much is true" so far, but I have two still left to read!

Scarlett_ohara I am currently listening to this one on Audible! 7y
Amiable @Scarlett_ohara, how are you liking it? I enjoyed it, although my favorite Wally Lamb novel is "I Know This Much is True" 7y
Scarlett_ohara I love it! The only two I've read are She's come undone and I know this much is true, and I have to admit I know this much is true is the best one. 7y

I absolutely loved this. Anyone that knows me knows I am a big fan of Wally Lamb (literally I make everyone read him)! His only fault in my eyes is that he doesn't have enough books and so I have rationed them over the years and now I've finished 😞. Anyway this one didn't fail to impress. I won't ruin any of the story, but for me he is the modern day existentialist! Yet another thrilling study of human character. I loved every minute! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Purrfectpages I really need to read this. Love Wally Lamb! 7y

I didn't mind this book..how a family struggles with different things that happened in their lives..and how they feel about their mother divorcing their dad to marry another woman...I found it dragged in a lot of parts..and Lloyd in all that's just my opinion.

I'm trying. I really am...but OMG THE OVER-ACTING IS KILLING ME!!! 🙄😡🙄😡 (Is that even a thing in audio?) Not bailing yet but I'm close. I'm at a point in the book where it seems like the narrator is a teenage drama queen trapped in an adult woman's body. Oy vey. #fiction #audio #audiobooks

Gulfsidemusing Ugh. Maybe switch to print? 8y
cathysaid @Lakesidemusing I think that might be the way to go 👍 8y
lynneamch Annoying audio can ruin a good book. There's a chance I might have had some positive reaction to Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend if I hadn't been listening to those horrible supposed Iowa accents. Not even close to realistic. Switch now.🙄 8y

cathysaid @lynneamch I guess I should, because I like Wally Lamb's books. Another book I didn't like the audio for was Everything I Never Told You but people rave about the book. But now I've got no desire to read it. 8y
lynneamch Thanks for the tip. I'll make a note on my TBR-- no audio on that one! 🔇🖒 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thanks for the heads up. I love Wally Lamb so I'll go the old fashioned route on this one. 8y

When your best friend recommends a book and/or author and feels the need to say "By the way, I'm sorry in advance," you know it's going to be good.
