It‘s not you it‘s me , definitely a marmite read , as others have said starts well and could have been two engrossing stories , always love a ghost 👻 story or even better narrated by a ghost , but tbh it just bored me , the dual time lines , which I usually love didn‘t work for me I had no interest in her previous life in Australia, I also have bass rock on my TBR which Iv been told is far superior

I do not believe in ghosts, which, since my death, has become something of a problem.

I‘m on a roll, one good book after another! One old black and white photo causes Hannah to return to London from Australia. As we get to know her, we meet past generations of her family, who they were, how they lived. Her boyfriend Max seems so great, but he‘s a ghost from the very beginning, and as we learn about her past, he does as well. It‘s a sad story, but made quite the impression.

This novel about generational drama I found uneven. The story in London was more compelling to me than the "Then" part set in Australia. Just did not work for me. 2.5 ?

The review backlog continues. The Echoes pulled at my heartstrings but didn‘t destroy me like I was prepared for..after reading reviews (and the blurb!) I was hesitant to pick it up for fear of being too sad, but I found plenty of moments of levity here. 3 timelines, 2 settings: different perspectives and locations. Max is still lingering after his death, watching Hannah in the London apartment they shared. Hannah remembers her past in Australia.

Check me out, buying a book, and then reading it right away instead of letting it sit on my shelf for months/years first! The things I will do for Evie Wyld. I absolutely loved this, I think it might be her strongest yet.

I ADORE Evie Wyld and her beautifully messy, complex women. So last summer when I read she had a new book I immediately ordered it, even though I knew I'd have to wait awhile for its North American release. The day is finally here! I'm almost finished another book, but plan to start this one today. Buying a book and starting to read it in the same day?!?! THAT'S how much I love her.

This didn't really work for me, which is a bummer because I think there were 2 good ideas here that were combined and it caused neither of them to be as effective as they could have been alone.
I loved the idea of Max as a ghost watching as life moves on after he passed, though I disliked the glimpses we see of predeath Max, what an a'hole. I think the point was to show generational trauma being passed down but with all the time jumps 👇

I got the ARC of this ages ago but never got round to it so thank you @BarbaraBB for bumping it up my TBR.

I loved it (read it in 2 hours) but it was totally not as expected from the blurb. That suggests it‘s a ghost story with a recently-deceased Max watching his girlfriend Hannah, but that‘s only a very minor part of this utterly fascinating novel.

It‘s quite a tough read though, covering past trauma and abuse amongst other difficult topics.

This is such a sad book. It starts with Max in an afterlife, after his death. He watches his girlfriend Hannah grieving in their London apartment. She‘s grieving for him but also for the echoes of the past, her growing up in rural Australia and all the secrets she left behind when coming to England.

Evie Wyld is a great storyteller and all pov‘s of the story are build up so well. An impressive book about love and grief and heritage.

I love the blurb to this book: “Max didn‘t believe in an afterlife. Until he died.”

Max and Hannah are a couple, living together. Then Max stays in their apartment after his death reporting on everything that happens after that.

Hannah tells the story of the past along with several others from her past

This book left me thoughtful and melancholy. Thinking about the echoes

And I wonder how Wyld does it? She keeps getting better with every book

Enjoying the Spring sunshine. Another perfect story from Evie. I love how her writing flows and I enjoyed that it had such a strong Australian connection. Lots of echoes in this story. The land , the people, the past. Even an echo of a ghost. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. @LapReader

When I saw Evie Wyld had a new book out, I raced out to buy it, having read The Bass Rock and All The Birds Singing, which were 👌.
Set in Australia and London this book explores how each generation is molded by the one before it in overt and subtle ways. Grief, abuse, love, self harm and even the Stolen Generation and a ghost feature in this affecting gem of a novel. Bravo 👏
