I thought this was interesting. I‘m looking forward to other essays on the topic.

https://open.substack.com/pub/stevenjreese/p/not-all-reading-is-good-reading?r=4...

Amiable Interesting. I don‘t disagree. Especially with his comments about comfort reads being like dessert, and how eating only dessert results in malnutrition. 16h
Zuhkeeyah He makes many good points. I definitely agree that reading just one thing will stunt growth and the algorithms don‘t encourage branching out. But unlike the charged literary works of the past, we have a variety of options when it comes to ingesting information about the world around us. 15h
rwmg Yes, I've always wondered when I see articles claiming that readers are more empathetic or emotionally intelligent or otherwise virtuous what it is that they are reading and whether the claims are true of all reading or just certain types of reading. 14h
See All 8 Comments
DGRachel My only issue with this article is that he specifically called out genres that are typically consumed by women as being “dessert” reads. It‘s highly misogynistic. He also fails to allow for depth in any kind of genre fiction, which shows bias. I think it‘s important to read widely, but I think this essay misses the mark on the message. (edited) 10h
Sace @Amiable agree. I love my comfort reads, but it is important for me to take time for deeper reads. 8h
Sace @DGRachel I see your point. I‘m taking this article as just another entry into the discussions I‘ve seen lately about the algorithms and how social media seems to feed everyone the same books. I‘ve mainly seen this discussion among female booktubers and Substackers. 8h
Sace @rwmg there‘s plenty of reading that can work against empathy and other virtues. 8h
Sace @Zuhkeeyah Amen. A LOT. that might explain the proliferation of “dessert” reading. I spend a lot of time paying attention to current events so when I sit down to read I‘m reaching for more of the same. I‘m looking for escape. 8h

I‘m impulsively giving this #audiobook a try. Maybe I heard about this author here? Anyhoodle…ironically I tend to read less during my summer vacation (which starts next Friday). Maybe this year I will break that trend. I‘m lurking. I‘m not really posting reviews. Just existing..but like bad just existing, more like enjoying some mental quiet and silence and not really needing to post here or anywhere.

DogMomIrene Yay for summer break soon😎 I haven‘t been reading as much lately either. It‘s hard for me to concentrate, so I‘ve been trying to up my exercise and activities so I‘m tired by bedtime. Here‘s to you spending your time off as you like! 4w

I changed my mind. I ended up kind of liking this. Maybe not my favorite, but not as annoying as some I‘ve read. The two mysteries actually ended up being connected so having multiple cases didn‘t bother me.

I hope someone read the earlier version. I want to know how they compare and if the bits about pirates and devastating hurricanes in my version were really just from the original.

3.75/5 ⭐️ (closer to good than so-so)

I started this series on audio but couldn‘t take the narrators. This first book leads right into the second so I bought it on kindle and enjoyed the writing much more (plus it made skipping the sexy time easier…call me a prude).

Fast paced, great characters, good story. Good escape reading.
