Falling in Love with Hominids
Falling in Love with Hominids | Nalo Hopkinson
An alluring new collection from the author of the New York Times Notable Book, Midnight RobberNalo Hopkinson (Brown Girl in the Ring, The Salt Roads, Sister Mine) is an internationally-beloved storyteller. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as having "an imagination that most of us would kill for," her Afro-Caribbean, Canadian, and American influences shine in truly unique stories that are filled with striking imagery, unlikely beauty, and delightful strangeness. In this long-awaited collection, Hopkinson continues to expand the boundaries of culture and imagination. Whether she is retelling The Tempest as a new Caribbean myth, filling a shopping mall with unfulfilled ghosts, or herding chickens that occasionally breathe fire, Hopkinson continues to create bold fiction that transcends boundaries and borders.

I finally made it back to the Empty Cup Collective for a spicy honey pizza! It was delicious, but not nearly as spicy as I expected. I‘d even call it non-spicy with an occasional mild hit.

I read another story from FALLING IN LOVE WITH HOMINIDS while I ate. It‘s a strong collection so far, with a good mix of story lengths so I can jump around depending on how much reading time I‘ve got.

August #BookSpin done! Just in time for... October... 🤷‍♀️ lol

Diverse sff short stories. Strong collection; as with all short story collections, some worked better for me than others, but overall I really enjoyed them.

I can't decide what book to read for the "includes African mythology" prompt #sfftbrchallenge These 4 look like they might fit, from what I can tell from the back covers. (Please tell me if you've read one and it doesn't fit).

Has anyone else doing #sfftbrchallenge filled this prompt? What book did you use?

Help me decide which book to read, Littens! Feel free to base a vote off anything... favourite cover art, whatever.

Lindy I‘ve read 3 (all except the tagged book) and recommend most: 6y
llwheeler @Lindy I think I'm leaning most towards that one too. Thanks! 6y

Hopkinson has long been a part of the sci-fi/speculative/fantasy scene, and her fiction is incisive, intimate, chilling, and emotional. In a few pages, she evokes foreign worlds w haunting familiarity, characters who plucked at my heart and linger still. While a bit uneven -- the standout stories really stand out -- this is a marvelous intro and a welcome volume for those who crave fiction featuring characters of color and/or queer folks.

👻 👻 👻 👻 👻 This was a wonderful collection of short stories. Nalo Hopkinson is an amazingly talented writer. I love that her stories have an otherworldly quality to them. (Also, that cover!!! 😍) My favourite story in this book is Habits which is about an haunted mall. This was my H selection for #LitsyAtoZ.

This is a collection of short stories by Nalo Hopkinson. They are speculative fiction featuring as main characters people of color and positive roles of LGBT persons. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories, they are beautifully written and widely varied. You will encounter street children living and hiding from a beast, a child with accelerated development, a highly tattooed orchid grower, and a Salvation Army Santa Clause. I highly recommend the book.

#Recommendsday
Most people aren't fans of short story collections or don't have an opinion on them because they simply don't think to read them! I started reading lots of them In 2016 and have been converted. Falling in Love With Hominids was one of my first in 2016 and I adored it. The stories within are diverse in content and representation. They're incredibly unique and Imaginative. This is a great intro to Nalo Hopkinson's work.

WOCreads Yay for Hopkinson🙌 I love them but it takes me ages to read since I try to let each story sink in before starting the next one🙈 But with so many amazing anthologies coming out I need to get better. 8y
