I'm a sucker for a sibling story.
1. I may have gotten carried away. Good thing there are no more fines.
2. I have no idea what one of these books is. (JK. Nalo is the best. ❤)
3. Not heading back to Boston until Monday earliest. So it's basically taunting me.
Here's my belated #MarchWrapUp. Another good month. I finished six books and DNFed one. Three novels, a book of short stories, a book of poems, and a nonfiction book. Sister Mine (my #BookSpin pick) was my favorite, closely followed by The Djinn Falls in Love and Entangled Life.
Makeda and Abby were born conjoined twins. When they were separated by their paternal relatives, the gods, Abby got all the magic while Makeda got two functional legs - and bitter jealousy. This is a beautiful novel about sisterhood and complicated family relationships, and I loved it.
This was my #BookSpin pick, and it was a real win. Thanks, @TheAromaofBooks!
This supernatural family drama was full of twists and turns I didn't see coming. Makeda feels like an outsider in her own family because she lacks the mojo that fuels her sister's extraordinary voice and her father's celestial nature. Her bid for independence leads to unexpected revelations that threaten to put her on her Uncle Jack's (aka Death's) to do list. Full of music, magic and uncontrollable kudzu, this was a wild ride.
This book was such a relief. So many stories promise sisters with “complicated” relationships, and instead just have woman and girls being pointlessly rude and mean to one another. Sister Mine had sisters that seemed like sisters, who compared themselves to one another, who said harsh things, but who had each other‘s back.
Haha I was looking through the posts for this book & found one of mine! Guess it's been on my tbr for ~2.5 years.
Anywho, I enjoyed this. Has a pretty low Litsy rating, so it might not have broad audience appeal, I dunno. But I like myth, fantasy, and prose that makes you pay attention to it. And I don't mind stories that ask you to just go along for the ride. So this story of celestials, sisters, & mojo in Toronto worked for me.
Cool cover, okay book 😋
A story of two sisters set in a world of Demigods, mojo, music, and a good deal of wickedness. A little slow at times. Lots of world building and exposition. Narration was alright. Overall, nothing spectacular, IMO, but enjoyable. Bonus points for excellent portrayals of disabled and queer characters
Finished the #FirstReadof2018
Great intro to a women of colour #canadianauthor ? All the gods and mojo were "new" to me and I loved it all! It was so creative and while some aspects could be guessed at, I was not fully sure if I was right, or how it was working till it was explained.
The characters were charming, imperfect, well developed for there being so many. Will have to read more of Hopkinson in the future!
Thanks to #ReadingWomenChallenge
#FirstReadof2018 -listening to this on our car ride back from in-laws. I'd never heard of Hopkinson before but my hubby found this book for me to meet the #FantasyNovelWrittenByAWomanofColor for #ReadingWomenChallenge It's exceeded my expectations & I 💜 how much my perspective has been challenged/pleasantly surprised! Plus! Set in TO- go CA go!

Would've been nice if someone had told the narrator how to pronounce Yonge!😂😂
This was my second attempt at SISTER MINE. The first time through, I loved it on impact but eventually drifted away from it as my listening time dried up. This time, I was less instantly enamoured and found my attention fading in and out. When it was on, it was ON, what with all the music and family and demigods in contemporary Toronto--but for the most part, alas, I wanted to like it far more than I actually did.
TW for no incest taboo, too.
Small bookhaul from one of my local indie bookstores. Uprooted's been on my TBR list for awhile, but Sister Mine is a new discovery and I cannot wait to read it. #bookhaul #shoplocal
How many books have a guitar turned human? I'm pretty sure only this one. #anthropomorphiccharacters #feistyfeb
Stopped by my local indie today... they were having a 20% off sale plus I had a gift card from Christmas, so obviously I was not walking out empty handed. First book purchase of 2017!
I cannot put into words how much I bloody LOVED this. Nalo Hopkinson is amazing, I was totally engrossed in this, so much so that I went a good 6stops past my bus stop this evening. Worth it.
#WWW #recommendsday Nalo Hopkinson. I really just love everything Nalo writes! She's a queer Black woman with disabilities writing fantasy, sci-fi and generally amazing, transformational fiction. She's smart and ridiculously creative and has a way with words! I can't recommend her enough!
Fun Friday Photo! I realized that I have not read a lot of Canadian authors but there are a lot I want to read! I do, however, really like Nalo Hopkinson - read The Salt Roads earlier this year and loved it so much that I bought Sister Mine right away! Need to read Atwood, Crummey, and many more!
Outstanding fantasy fiction about mojo, disability and power through service. Nalo Hopkinson rocks! http://cannonballread.com/2016/04/different-not-less-2/
