I've always been a fan of Jean Plaidy's historical novels but I've not read many that she authored as Victoria Holt. I really enjoyed this gothic romance and murder mystery, even if it did seem to borrow a lot of elements from Jane Eyre and Rebecca.

My first Victoria Holt, with echoes of Jane Eyre in the storyline. Martha Leigh becomes the governess to Connan TreMellyn‘s young daughter Alvean. Alvean‘s mother died under scandalous circumstances, yet there is speculation that she still walks the halls of the manor. I enjoyed this - slight twist at the end, and while listening to this, I did say out loud how “smooth” the guys‘ pickup lines are. I‘d read more! Good to listen to! #192025 #1960

This one is set in the days before Christmas, Christmas and New Year‘s. So I probably read this a little too soon

Just before Christmas, a taxi arrives to the house in the woods. The family isn‘t expecting anyone. It turns out that it‘s the son of the couple the family switched houses with. So they all try to give Anton the best Christmas they can.

8/23 What I learnt from this book of short stories is that I prefer Christie‘s full length mysteries. Not because she isn‘t skillful in the short stories but because I get less time to guess what‘s happened! My favorite story was the last. Filled with nostaligia for the 1960s. Supposed to be a horror but I'm not feeling it. Still enjoyable enough read to want to see it to the end though.
