Erasure: A Novel | Percival Everett
post image

I‘m starting this book tonight, my fourth for #authoramonth this month

@Soubhiville

willaful I loved James but haven't been able to get into I Am Not Sidney Potier or Dr. No. Can you recommend something for me I might like? He is so prolific and writes in so many styles! 4h
Vansa @willaful This tagged book is absolutely great! James is also a very good, but very harrowing re-telling of Huckleberry Finn 2h

What first struck me about this novel about art getting out of hand was how quickly I felt close to the characters. There's an event near the beginning that's foreshadowed clearly, but still it felt like a blow when it came because I had connected with the characters so much already. I listened to part of the novel in the car and found myself self-consciously turning down the volume at stop lights. (Guess which section that was.) #authoramonth

ImperfectCJ It felt good to be drawn into a story like this one drew me in. I'm excited to read more from Everett. 18h
ImperfectCJ And Sean Crisden's narration on the audiobook was excellent! 18h

#AuthorAMonth #Read2025 Aaaallll the 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Aaaallll the recommendations!! I‘m afraid if I start telling you about this book, I‘ll spoil it. I would hate to do that to you. It is incredibly powerful and if you want to read a work of fiction about very real events, then I believe you should read this.

Astounding! White men are showing up dead alongside long-deceased black men in Money, Mississippi and then around the country. Out west, the newly dead white men are accompanied by long-dead Asian men. A team of Black detectives start putting the pieces together in this deeply racist town where Emmett Till was murdered. And it seems extremely elderly Mama Z, who has recorded every lynching in the United States, may be connecting the dots, too. ⬇️

Texreader A murder mystery like no other, this is a book that gets twistier and more deadly as it progresses. Countless trigger warnings. This one isn‘t pretty but it is important. And it‘s told very well—in some parts it‘s downright hilarious. But it‘s a deeply serious book, too. I‘m surprised, but only a little bit given it‘s subject matter, that it didn‘t win the Pulitzer. #authoramonth 2d
Leniverse The Pulitzer that year went to The Netanyahus, which was a bad choice then and already hasn't aged well. I don't know what the jury or the board were thinking! At least Everett won this year for James. Barely. (He should have been a shoo-in, but wasn't even in the original three finalists 😱) 2d
Soubhiville Great review! 2d
Tamra I loved it too. It‘s haunting - so well done. 2d

Well, this was one of the more unusual reading experiences I‘ve had! The main character‘s last name is Poitier, and his first name is Not Sidney. Much hilarity and clever dialogue ensues due to this unusual name. Not Sidney is Black, and is the victim of all kinds of racial prejudice - truly serious American societal issues - but somehow Percival Everett manages to write these scenes as humorous. Very skillful. ⬇️

julieclair But then there are the bizarre scenes - mostly dream sequences - which were either total nonsense or just way over my head - not sure which. Not to mention that Not Sidney‘s two closest friends are Ted Turner, who talks in stream of consciousness, and Percival Everett himself, who is portrayed as an aloof and eccentric university professor. But somehow, through all the cryptic dialogue, they manage to give Not Sidney good advice. ⬇️ 3d
julieclair I listened on audio, and the narrator did a fabulous job of capturing the accents and attitudes of the various characters. Since there wasn‘t much of a plot - rather a chronological series of events that happen in Not Sidney‘s life - it was easy to dip in and out of this one whenever I needed a laugh - or to think - or to be confused. 3d
BarbaraBB I really want to read this! Great review. 3d
julieclair @BarbaraBB I think you‘ll enjoy it. You‘ll definitely laugh a lot! 2d
