The Fall of Arthur | J.R.R. Tolkien

I read Canto II today and found it took a bit more effort to read than the first one.

The way Tolkien describes Guinevere in this section reminds me of Luthien fleeing from her house in the tree and out of the forest of Doriath.

BooksandCoffee4Me If interested in Tolkien, I highly recommend the book The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings: J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, which narrates the biographies of each of the Inklings, including Tolkien, and in addition gives details about the interactions and relationships among the group members. Happy Sunday! My goal this week is to read a canto daily, but I‘m not sure I‘ll manage it consistently. Whether or not I get to post during the week, I‘m happy to be back to some Sunday mornings with Tolkien. I don‘t consider myself much of a poetry fan, but I love this alliterative style of narrative poem. The language is beautiful.

Daisey It‘s also been a while since I‘ve read any version of the Arthur legend, so I may need to look for something in audio form for some comparison. 5d
JazzFeathers You know? I was a fan of Arthurian legends before l was a Tolkien fan. When l was a teenager, l read both sours materials and many retellings. Yet, it's been a long time. It'll be fun to read something that gets these two passions of mine together 😊 5d

Daisey @JazzFeathers This should definitely be a great read for you then! I‘ll look forward to hearing your thoughts as we continue. 5d
BooksandCoffee4Me @JazzFeathers Same! I‘m eager to read this! 3d
Daisey @BooksandCoffee4Me I‘ve added you to the tag list for this book! Do you want to be on my master list for Tolkien reads as well to know when we‘re going to start a new book? 3d
BooksandCoffee4Me @Daisey Yes, thank you! I‘m excited about reading more of his work now that I‘ve read about him! 3d

Late as always, but l have started this book 😜

But so, this is an original Tolkien?
Is it not a translation, like Gawain and the Green Knight?

Bookwomble It's a translation exercise he didn't complete 🙂 5d
Daisey I think we‘ll be able to discuss this better with one of the included essays, but it seems to me from the foreword that retelling of the legend might be better description than translation of any particular version. 5d
Bookwomble @JazzFeathers Apologies, I was thinking of the medieval “The Death of Arthur“, which Tolkien used as a partial source for his own poem, but it's not a translation. I should fact check myself before rather than after posting! 🙄 (edited) 5d
JazzFeathers @Bookwomble Don't worry 😂 We're here to learn and discuss. I also keep calling this Mort d'Arthur and used to think it was another translation like Gawain. Such a pity Tolkien didn't finish this. But he was a very busy man, with so many interests. 5d

It‘s been a full day with family, so I‘m just now getting a chance to post about reading the foreword of The Fall of Arthur. It includes some interesting introductory information, and I‘m looking forward to staring the poem tomorrow! I‘ve enjoyed other poetry by Tolkien using an alliterative style, so I‘m intrigued to see what I think of this one. Anyone else gotten started already?

#FellowshipOfTolkien #MedievalTolkien

BarbaraJean I read the Foreword this afternoon! I‘m interested to start the poem tomorrow. 5d
TheAromaofBooks I did read the foreword yesterday. I'm not usually into poetry, but I actually LOVED the alliterative poem about Sir Gawain, so I'm quite intrigued to read this one. 5d

Repost for @Daisey

#FellowshipOfTolkien Readers, here‘s our plan for The Fall of Arthur! I would like to finish reading it in February, but I also think this book may require some slow, close reading. Remember our schedule is always a very loose guideline and feel free to post your thoughts at any time. I hope to make time to post each weekend if not during the week.

#FellowdhipOfTolkien

@Daisey and l are planning to start a new #MedievalTolkien read, possibly at the beginning of February.

So, you know, l was an Arthurian legends fan before l became a Tolkien fan. Is this coming full circle? 😆

Pleas join us if you are a Tolkien fan, an Arthurian legends fan, a Medieval history fan... a reader 😁

I‘m going to have to bail on this one. The writing is dry and it reads like a dissertation. Example “At the point when Perceval rides out into the grey and empty dawn from the deserted castle, we are two-fifths of the way through Chrétien‘s work in its unfinished form.” That‘s a sentence chosen at random. ? I wanted to like it, but when reading becomes a chore, I‘m out. Too many good books out there. #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

Aims42 Life‘s too short for boring books! Hopefully your next read is a great one 🤞 4w

Repost for @Daisey

Tolkien readers, I‘m waiting on my copy to arrive in order to plan a timeline, but our next read will be The Fall of Arthur. @JazzFeathers and I hope to start at the beginning of February, but we can push it back if needed for interested readers to find copies.
