This is a book you could read seven times and get something new each time. A woman leaves her life behind to live a quiet life at a priory, although she herself doesn't share the nuns' religious beliefs. The beauty and solitude of her daily life are haunted by her past and her grief. The creeping, claustrophobic feelings presented by an infestation of mice on the property play with these themes and keep the reader as unsettled as the narrator.

TheKidUpstairs Wood's craft is top-notch. Her writing is spare, thoughtful and beautiful. The characters are all so fully formed and genuine, even if we only get a glimpse of their lives. And the story is the right amount of "nothing much happens" while still being incredibly engaging. Loved it. Highly recommend. 3d

"A heavy spring frost this morning. Crossing the grass I made a clean track of footprints, deep green on the white spread of the lawn. It returned me to my childhood, to the sense of secret authority, imprinting one's presence into a place with those clear, sharp prints. I exist. The private, pleasurable sound of the finest layer of ice breaking beneath the weight of each step."

Chelsea.Poole This is such a ‘you‘ book. How are you liking it? I have it checked out and I‘m itching to crack it open. 7d
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole it totally is! I was a bit worried that it wouldn't live up to my expectations, because I've been waiting so long to read it, but it is so SO good so far. The writing is beautiful, and evocative, and engaging, and thoughtful. I think you'll love it, too! 7d
BarbaraBB Yes, totally your kind of book! Glad it lives up to your expectations! 6d

I waited so long for this book from the library and it was definitely worth it. Such a beautiful book about coming to terms with loss and grief and finding some sort of peace. The sparse writing matched the feeling of the setting and the narrator‘s sense of having been stripped down to her core well. Our Kelpie mix like the one featured in the story pictured here.

Cathythoughts Great picture. I‘ve been shying away from this book , not sure why. But I must give it a go. 👍🏻❤️ 1w
BarbaraBB I loved this one. You‘ve been reading a lot!! 1w
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I‘ve mostly been behind on Litsy and reviews! But yes, I‘m also reading to escape from the stress of everything happening these days. 😑 1w
sarahbarnes @Cathythoughts I do think you‘d enjoy it. But you‘ll pick it up if/when it‘s the right time for you. ♥️ 1w
Suet624 I‘m so glad you were finally able to read it. 1w

It‘s amazing sometimes how a passage will suddenly hit so close to home. As I am coming up on the two year anniversary of finishing cancer treatment, this passage hit hard.

Beautiful narrative of grief and meditation and faith. How we live on this earth and spend our lives. Unsettling undercurrent which sits perfectly with the surface.

Gifts from the 📕 Swap gods on Wednesday night after Reading between the Wines Book Club at Modus Brewery. I‘d never been there before. My spicy margarita and tuna ceviche was yum and it was the perfect late summer evening for a stroll home before bed. Lily Brett has been a favourite of mine since I was in my 20s and I enjoy a good magazine and loose leaf tea on the train to work to make me happy during the working week. These are some of my favs.

This meditative book turned out to be the perfect fiction companion for the NF Raising Hare. Both are quiet and contemplative with a focus on life‘s true priorities and nature. I enjoyed this.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful books I have recently read. The narrator, a woman in the middle of her life, removes herself from this world of greed&destruction. In a convent she finds time to reflect&we have the privilege to accompany her on her contemplative journey into memory, remorse &grief. There‘s so much to unpack in this book:spirituality& the meaning of religion&community, the plague &the nemesis who are also a symbol for the

Anna40 Narrator‘s past mistakes & our greed that has led to the distinction of species, destruction of nature. Throughout the book the horror of death&disappearing emerge in the form of past & current events. A wonderful book & writer that deserve every bit of praise they have already received. 1mo
