Okay, #LittleRaskols , I‘m going in!

This is the old translation by Constance Garnett - how does it compare with yours?

#CPBuddyRead

batsy That's a lovely illustrated edition! The excerpt above has a fairy tale quality to it. I haven't started yet but from flipping through it, Ready's translation has a more alienated, modern feeling from the start. I also have an older Penguin edition translated by David Magarshack, though I'll be using the Ready. I'll try to post an excerpt of the Magarshack later for a fun comparison 🤓 #nerdyraskols 6y
GatheringBooks oooh! an illustrated edition! awesome! 6y
Lindy @batsy I want to see duelling translations, as a spectator to this readalong. 🤓 (edited) 6y

saresmoore This translation seems a bit more formal and stilted than Ready‘s. Like @batsy said, I think it has a modern style, which makes you feel connected to the narrator‘s thoughts, rather than a close observation of Raskolnikov. But I could be way off—ha! 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore you can definitely see the different times the translations were written. I like the style of this one, the interesting thing will be if and when we notice the bits that Garnett skips. I wonder whether it will be obvious or whether you can only really see it compared with the Russian? @dgrachel @vivastory @ValerieAndBooks 6y
Mdargusch Good luck! 🍀 6y
drokka I wish you ALL the luck. 😁 6y
LeahBergen @batsy @saresmoore @LauraBeth @Moray_Reads @vivastory @Lindy @DGRachel @ValerieAndBooks I‘ve been manically flipping back-and-forth and comparing these first pages. 😆😆 I can see differences but it seems to have calmed any “translation fears” that I had (and now I think I can read my edition and not obsess about it). 6y
LeahBergen @Mdargusch @drokka 😂😂 Thanks! 6y
LeahBergen @GatheringBooks I love to read illustrated classics. 👍🏻 6y
ValerieAndBooks Should still be good, love that yours is illustrated. Starting my copy tomorrow morning!! The Oliver Ready translation with all the blood on the cover. @batsy @saresmoore @LauraBeth @Moray_Reads @vivastory @Lindy @DGRachel @CSeydel (edited) 6y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @LeahBergen I like the old-fashioned flavor of this translation. 6y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I do, too. 👍🏻 6y

I‘m (perhaps inordinately) enthused to be starting Crime & Punishment at the Historic USO building while my drama queen attends her acting class.

Moray_Reads I've read 50 pages and I don't remember a thing! Did I just pretend I read this at school?? 6y
readordierachel A+ photo composition here! 6y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I think, in school, we were all doing a lot of pretending. It‘s good, though, right? Like reading it for the first time! 6y

saresmoore @ReadOrDieRachel Thanks! The random collage of USO memorabilia helped a lot. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore Pretend to read something? I'm not familiar with the concept. Or, at least, I didn't think I was 😉. School was where I discovered my long love of Russian lit! 6y
LauraBeth @Moray_Reads Hi 🙋‍♀️ I would have totally pretended to have read it and cheated off someone during the CnP test @saresmoore 6y
Moray_Reads @LauraBeth 😂 maybe I was so ashamed of the lie that I've repressed it. Maybe I'm such a good liar I've even convinced myself! 6y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads @LauraBeth I never had to read Russian lit in school, which is probably why I like it so much! But when it came to reading the great philosophers, I may have been known to crack a spine or do some hasty underlining five minutes before class discussion... 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore I didn't have to, it was too shipment my history A level in Russian history. I read the literature by choice! I'm going to read more, maybe it will start feeling familiar later on... 6y
rabbitprincess I love the hashtag! 😄 6y
saresmoore @rabbitprincess Isn‘t it great? @DGRachel is the genius behind it! 6y
AlaMich That cover!! Is that the Penguin Deluxe edition? They do the best covers... 6y
saresmoore @AlaMich You know it! I think I‘m going to need more of them. 😊 6y

I knew I would see myself in Raskolnikov don't target than later... except I don't tend to have that initial desire for human company in the first place #LittleRaskols #CPBuddyRead

saresmoore Haha! So very relatable. 6y
CSeydel Oh man I want to read this again! I remember actually liking it in high school 😳 6y
LeahBergen 😂😂 6y
Moray_Reads @CSeydel that's when I last read it too, but I don't remember a huge amount 🤔 6y

I'm bad at a planned TBR so I can only offer this, Crime and Punishment for a buddy read (do we have a hashtag @saresmoore ?) and at least a few of the 300+ books/ARCs on my Kindle... Once I've cracked the cover C&P will be my #currentlyreading #marchtbr #readingresolutions #marchinbooks

AshleyHoss820 That‘s an awesome cover! 6y
Moray_Reads @AshleyHoss820 it's lovely, isn't it? It's one of two great designs for the Oliver Ready translation, the other is here https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/all-is-permitted-all-over-again-oliver-ready... 6y
saresmoore I love this cover, too! Oh and hashtag...hurm...let‘s make it #CPBuddyRead (It took a lot of restraint for me not to make a joke about the read being criminal or punishing. 😆) 6y

AshleyHoss820 @Moray_Reads Oo!! Thank you!! 6y
batsy @saresmoore Like #punishers or #crimeys? (I'm sorry, I should go to bed 😂) 6y
Simona 😍😍😍😍 Interesting cover❣️ 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @batsy is there a pun on Raskolnikov? A prize to anyone who can think of one! @ValerieAndBooks @DGRachel @vivastory @LeahBergen 6y
DGRachel @Moray_Reads @saresmoore @batsy @ValerieAndBooks @vivastory @LeahBergen @LauraBeth You mean something like #LittleRaskols? (Sorry...I am heartily ashamed of myself for that. 🤣🤣) 6y
batsy @DGRachel 👏🏽👏🏽😂 6y
saresmoore @DGRachel Yes! Ahahaha! @batsy I am thinking we have a club forming. I see t-shirts in our future! @ValerieAndBooks @vivastory @LauraBeth @LeahBergen I‘m seriously voting for #LittleRaskols as our buddy read tag! 6y
Moray_Reads @DGRachel that's brilliant! If you want to email me your address that deserves an actual prize! morayteale@gmail.com #littleraskols I love it. 6y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth The photo that I posted yesterday of my dogs? The big one was Pete, Petey, Pete the Pup. He was named that because of the black spot on his eye (faded in the photo because he was old and grey there). 😂 6y
CSeydel @DGRachel LittleRaskols! I‘m actually LOLing. That‘s perfect 6y
ValerieAndBooks @DGRachel is winning 😂!! #littleraskols is a great hashtag. I plan to actually start this weekend, although I may read the intro before then. I want to at least finish Notes from Underground first, so I‘m not reading two by the same author concurrently. @LeahBergen @Moray_Reads @batsy @saresmoore @LauraBeth @vivastory 6y
LauraBeth @LeahBergen ❤️❤️❤️ what cuties they both were. There is a pup out there that needs you to love on him and dress him in regency clothing. 🐶💕 6y
maich Wow! That cover❤ 6y
CSeydel I totally want to join, but I know I can‘t start it until after my March 6 work deadline. But maybe I‘ll catch up? @Moray_Reads @LeahBergen @batsy @vivastory @LauraBeth @saresmoore @DGRachel @ValerieAndBooks 6y
saresmoore @CSeydel Absolutely! We are each going at our own pace. I‘m aiming for about two chapters per day, but don‘t hold me to it. 😬 Please do join us! 6y
CSeydel @saresmoore yay 😁 📚 (edited) 6y
Moray_Reads @CSeydel join us! We're very aware of people different speeds and needs! 6y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth I know! 😩😩 6y
vivastory @DGRachel 😂😂 #littleraskols I love it! 6y
batsy @ValerieAndBooks I'm also probably only going to start later today (Friday) or on the weekend. Want to dive into it after I clear off my leftover books from Feb 😊 Nice to have you with us, @CSeydel ! 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit Can anyone else join in? I just saw this and would love to reread this with a group, if that‘s okay. 6y
Moray_Reads @CindyMyLifeIsLit of course! It's a very informal buddy read because we're (i.e. I'm) bad at sticking to timetables so just go at your own pace and post as and when you like with anything you find interesting. We're using the hashtags #CPBuddyRead and #LittleRaskols 6y

Also - I googled Zimmerman Hat - it‘s the Monopoly top hat 🎩

saresmoore 😂 You just pulled so much wisdom out of that chapter! 6y
batsy Bahahaha! I haven't started and I think I don't have to actually read the book now! The pre-Britney-alimony Kevin Federline kills me 😂😂 6y
