An #amazing book made all the more amazing with the #littleraskols 😈 This is a great episode of In Our Time, with useful insight into both the writer & the book: https://bbc.in/2R271T0 One of the guests is Oliver Ready, whose translation is the version I read.

Thank you for an amazing era of musical photo challenges, @Cinfhen ! When I first joined Litsy it was how I felt welcome & made new bookish friends. I appreciate that so much ❤️ #MOvember

Theaelizabet I love In Our Time. 5y

The Karamazov Brothers | Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ignat Avsey
post image

Hey, #LittleRaskols, does this passage remind you of Raskolnikov‘s dream in Crime & Punishment? I don‘t remember if there was a footnote to reference the poem mentioned here in The Brothers Karamazov.

#MyVodkaBromance

vivastory Absolutely reminds me of Raskolnikov's nightmare. I was immensely disturbed by the dream. This is a powerful quote. 6y
saresmoore @vivastory I was disturbed by it, too. The discussion goes into descriptions of even more abominable violence from there, in The Brothers. Whereas C&P felt almost surreal in its anguish, TBK is jarring in its realism (albeit still with plenty of melodrama). 6y
See All 10 Comments
LeahBergen It does! I didn‘t know it referenced a poem. 🤔 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Russian writers are weird. 6y
batsy Yup, it totally did. And I found this passage so hard to read, how Dostoevsky doesn't just "psychologize"(?) people but animals too, so you really feel for them. 6y
Moray_Reads Definitely. I'm not up to this part yet, I may have to skim it carefully, the passage in C&P was bad enough! 😖 6y
saresmoore @batsy It was so hard to read and it just kept getting worse! When Ivan started talking to Alyosha about loving children, I immediately thought about Lise 😝 and it was all downhill from there... @Moray_Reads I think you could get away with skimming all of book 5, chapter 4. 6y
LauraBeth What I noticed about Quixote was that the description and characterization of DQ‘s and Sancho‘s donkeys seemed to reflect their owners. And when Sancho muses on Dapple, he‘s actually musing on himself. 🤔 I‘m not sure what my point is though 😂 6y
saresmoore @LauraBeth Probably the same as Dostoevsky‘s! That we tend to project our emotions, triumphs, shortcomings, even (and maybe especially) our aggressions onto those beasts who are closest to us. I think it‘s sort of fascinating! 6y

Crime and Punishment | Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky

All if the recent talk of #Russia literature has me eager to read Dostoevsky. What do all of the #littleraskols out there think about the different translations?? I know what I would choose judging in the covers 😍 but want to pick a good translation!! Help!
Tagging a few of you experts of Russian literature...

#augustisatrip

saresmoore Experts! Hahahaha! I preferred David McDuff‘s translation, but it has the most boring cover. 6y
doodlebug55 I read Larissa Volokhonsky and Richard Pevear‘s translation, was pretty good. The prose flowed naturally and wasn‘t stilted, unlike some other translated works I‘ve read. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love a great cover!!! #coverlover 🖤❤️🖤❤️ 6y

Tashreads Great cover 😍 6y
batsy Far from expert 😂 I've only read the Oliver Ready translation so I can't compare it with others, but I enjoyed it very much. 6y
Reviewsbylola Far left. 6y
Reviewsbylola Consider me an expert. Not on Russian lot but on covers. 6y
emilyhaldi @saresmoore @batsy you're definitely experts compared to me! It's all relative 😉 I'm going to with the Ready translation since it seems to be well liked and obviously, the cover 😍 6y
emilyhaldi Lol @Reviewsbylola also important 6y
KarouBlue Pevear/Volokhonsky are purists. Their motto is language for language‘s sake. Theirs will hug the original text the most accurately. I think you‘re pretty cover their may be the Oliver Ready translation - British and enjoyable. The Katz translation wasn‘t my personal favorite. Too heavy and I felt like it deviated from the original a little too much! 6y
emilyhaldi @MellieAntoinete Sounds like you're the true Russian literature expert!! Your thoughts echo most of what I have read- it seems that Ready is maybe a bit more modern and maybe has a better flow. I considered the Katz for a bit but glad I didn't go that route! 6y
LeahBergen I read the old translation by Constance Garnett and really enjoyed it. 6y
saresmoore I started out with Oliver Ready (and kept the copy because it‘s so pretty!) but it was TOO British/modern for me. It felt a bit jarring. But then again, it might be effective in bringing out more of Dostoevsky‘s own tone. P/V are meticulous and I‘ve really enjoyed their translations of Anna Karenina and now The Brothers Karamazov. It was McDuff‘s translation, though, that “felt” right and made the book more readable for me. 6y
saresmoore There are some interviews and articles with Pevear & Volokhonsky that I‘ve found really fascinating. Their process is impressive! 6y
emilyhaldi Interesting! @saresmoore Did you alternate the different translations as you read or once you tried McDuff did you stick with him? It would be curious (but time consuming) to have a couple different options while reading. 6y
saresmoore I cross-referenced with any passages that seemed weird or striking. The Penguin Classics Deluxe edition also had excellent footnotes, so I kept going back to those. I tend to be a slow & deep reader and I love falling down rabbit holes. Ultimately, though, I found McDuff‘s translation to be so effortless that I eventually got lost in the story. 6y

The Brothers Karamazov | Fyodor Dostoevsky
post image

Hmm, it seems I‘ve fallen a bit behind on my #LitsyClassics challenge. 😳 And The Brothers Karamazov is the one I just started... Well, I still think I can do it. I just have to get serious. 🧐

DivineDiana Didn‘t know about this challenge?!? Looks like you are making substantial progress! 👏🏻 6y
Leniverse Uh. I need to look at my signup document. I don‘t even remember what books I put on it. I might have read some of them. 😂 6y
batsy You can do it! 💪🏽 I need to get serious, too. We'll be earnest and serious together? 🧐 6y

emilyhaldi Fun!!! I want to start this challenge now (with a deadline falling somewhere in 2019 😂) 6y
Sarah83 Looks great 😍 6y
saresmoore @emilyhaldi It is a really great challenge. Just planning for it, I‘ve unearthed all sorts of interesting books! 6y
saresmoore @batsy Oh! Your use of “earnest” reminds me that I also already filled the I requirement! 😂 6y
saresmoore @Leniverse I intentionally left my sign up document blank to be filled in later. I am terrible at sticking to a planned list! 6y
batsy I just remembered I'd slotted in Moby Dick for M 😂 Maybe I should tackle that next year and not on a challenge basis 😬 6y
janeycanuck I just started crime and punishment. I‘m having trouble getting into it. Did you have that problem? 6y
saresmoore @janeycanuck It May be the translation. We compared several different ones for the #LittleRaskols buddy read. Do you know which translator you‘re reading? 6y
saresmoore @batsy I was still harboring hopes of doing Moby Dick for M until I looked at my pathetic list and realized the half-finished Middlemarch was a better choice than a fully unopened monolith! And really, I don‘t know if I‘ll ever finish The Brothers Karamazov. I‘m on page 20 out of 7,000,000 and I‘ve already read three different stories?! Gosh, sorry, I‘m being bleak. *ahem* We can do it! 💪 6y
janeycanuck @saresmoore no, it doesn‘t say and I can‘t figure it out by a quick google. I‘ll take a look at the translation convo and maybe pick up a different one. Thanks for the tip!! 6y
batsy Hahaha! It's totally fine to be bleak, we're reading Dostoevsky and that means we're getting right into the spirit of things 😂 To be honest, I've been too terrified to start because it's been a busy few days. I'm hoping to *really* get started this weekend. 💪🏽👊🏽 6y
saresmoore @batsy Again I find myself lamenting & longing for the seclusion of academic/cloistered/reclusive life. Maybe I‘ll just go hide myself in a closet and read Dickinson to recharge. 😬 6y
batsy Any room for me in that closet? *clambers in with a copy of Dickinson, tries not to step on your toes* 6y
saresmoore @batsy 😁 I‘m now imagining it through a portal to another dimension—we each have a door. Ah, the stuff of childhood daydreams! 6y
batsy Perfect 💫😍 6y
Moray_Reads I'm so jealous of your lovely handwriting! The thing (one of them) that I hated most about teaching was having my ugly writing up on the board all the time 🤭 6y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads It must be the years I spent doodling words in my notebook out of boredom during school. 🙃 6y

The Brothers Karamazov | Fyodor Dostoevsky
post image

I finished making my cozy reading cardigan just in time for an informal buddy read of this admittedly very intimidating book! Because we just can‘t get enough of Dostoevsky. 😬

All are welcome to join! Read at your own pace and we‘ll post & discuss anything we find interesting.

Now, friends, #BKBuddyRead is pretty boring compared with our last Dostoevsky buddy read (#LittleRaskols). Any fun ideas?

Quirkybookworm Drooling over cardigan! Gorgeous! 6y
LeahBergen Oh no!! Is it that time already? 😆😆 Love the cardy! 💕💕 6y

saresmoore @LeahBergen Eep! I know. It snuck right up on me, too. I‘m just happy I remembered to post about it. 😬 6y
andrew61 I'll look forward to your comments sara- i keep looking at it but have always been daunted by the size and tiny print- enjoy. 6y
vivastory I've been trying to think of a good hashtag...#MyVodkaBromance ? 6y
saresmoore @vivastory 😂 I kind of love that. 6y
sisilia Whoaaa it‘s time for BK! @vivastory I love that hashtag 🤣 6y
sisilia @saresmoore That cardigan! 😍😍😍 6y
vivastory @saresmoore @sisilia Really? 😄 Sounds good to me! #MyVodkaBromance 6y
vivastory BTW, Sara I'm really impressed by your cardigan! Many years ago I wore them on nearly a daily basis in the fall and winter 6y
Lcsmcat I‘ve had this on my list for awhile now. I‘d like to join in. Is there a schedule? 6y
saresmoore @Lcsmcat Hooray! I have no formal schedule in mind, just share a post whenever you start with the hashtag (#MyVodkaBromance 😄) so we can see the translation you‘re reading. 6y
vivastory @Lcsmcat I think it's going to be a read at our own pace, relaxed read. I'm hoping to finish by the third week of August. 6y
saresmoore @vivastory It makes me very happy to know you‘re a cardigan fan! 6y
saresmoore @sisilia Yes! No pressure to rush into it. I‘ve just gotten started, but I‘m already enjoying the story. 6y
saresmoore @vivastory 3 weeks is ambitious! @Lcsmcat I think I‘ll probably take the whole month to get through it. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That cardigan is amazing - Im still on hat/scarf level! And Dostoevsky - ❤️❤️😍 6y
vivastory @saresmoore I am giving myself three weeks in case I need the fourth as wiggle room. I definitely want to be done in time for Les Misérables buddy read & the John Fowles' br 6y
ValerieAndBooks Beautiful sweater! Hope you post a pic of you modeling it! I think I want to join the readalong 🙋‍♀️! 6y
batsy That cardigan looks lush and cozy 😍 I can't believe it's August already, Sara! Eeep. Looking forward to this and also so intimidated. Yay, the more the merrier, @ValerieAndBooks 😊 6y
batsy @vivastory Love it 😂 6y
ReadingEnvy Oh my gosh it's so beautiful!! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I love your cardigan! Gorgeous colour too! Oh, dear, I‘ve forgotten about this br, I‘ve just started a big book last night. I‘m glad it‘s a ‘at your own pace‘! 6y
AlaMich I am in awe of your knitting skill! But what‘s with a cardigan in August?? 😉 6y
saresmoore @AlaMich Usually it takes me months to finish crochet projects, so I was planning to have this ready for October. I guess I‘m getting faster! 6y
saresmoore @ValerieAndBooks Hooray! I meant to ask you if you wanted to join! 6y
AlaMich @saresmoore I read your comment about why you learned to crochet, but how did you learn? 6y
saresmoore @batsy I‘m intimidated, too! I think with all the Shakespeare you‘ve been reading, though, BK should be easy peasy. 😅 6y
saresmoore @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I was stuck on hats for so many years—I have such a hard time getting them fitted correctly! The hardest part about cardigans is putting all of the pieces together. My first one was sort of a disaster—I put it together like pants, rather then a sweater and had to take it all apart. 😆 6y
saresmoore @ReadingEnvy Thank you! 😘 6y
saresmoore @erzascarletbookgasm Yes, no pressure or deadlines! Eventually we‘ll all read it (or not), but the best part is the discussion. 😊 I would have posted a reminder, but mostly forgot about it, myself. Oops! 6y
saresmoore @vivastory You‘re the buddy read king! 👑 6y
emilyhaldi So envious of this cardigan!!!🙌🏻 6y
DGRachel The cardigan is beautiful! 6y
saresmoore @AlaMich I learned from a book, actually! Eventually I broke down and watched a YouTube video on a particular stitch and figured out that I was holding the yarn wrong (which explained my too-tight stitches and achy hands). Mostly I just gathered books and patterns and tried lots of things. If you‘re interested, some of my favorite websites are yarnandchai.com, lovecrochet.com, & this cardigan is from makeanddocrew.com. 6y
saresmoore @DGRachel Thank you! It‘s ultra cozy, too. 6y
saresmoore @emilyhaldi I think you would probably love it. It feels like a Snuggie, but looks like it came from a Portland boutique. 😆 6y
Lindy What a lovely cardigan! I wish you well in the BK readalong; I will watch in admiration and with encouragement from the sidelines. 6y
saresmoore @Lindy Your cheering is much appreciated! 6y
CSeydel Thanks for the tag @sisilia !! I really want to read BK but it‘s the wrong time for me - too much traveling this month and I won‘t be able to concentrate. I‘m going to shoot for September or October. But I love the hashtag :) I‘ll try to remember to contribute to the discussion when I get to it 😊 6y
saresmoore @CSeydel Enjoy your travels! It‘s never too late to discuss great books. Besides, I‘ll probably still be reading it come October. 😅 6y
Moray_Reads I might be late starting this one but hopefully I can catch up - moving is taking all my time! 6y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I can imagine! I think you‘re likely to catch up, though. I‘m going at a snail‘s pace so far. 6y
AlaMich @saresmoore I‘m even more impressed that you learned on your own! 6y
BookishTrish May I join you all? 6y
saresmoore @BookishTrish Of course! That would be lovely! Please share a post of your translation/mode of reading when you get started, if you don‘t mind. 😊 6y
bookandcat Ooh I would like to join in! Been wanting to read this. What's the reading schedule (if there is one)? And what is the hashtag to use now? 6y
saresmoore @bookandcat Yay! No schedule, very informal. 😊 We‘re using #MyVodkaBromance and you can share your reading format & translation of choice/edition whenever you get started! 6y
saresmoore @bookandcat Generally, we all just share quotes we find interesting to spur discussion and if you come across a passage that seems odd, we can compare translations. 6y
bookandcat @saresmoore just ordered my copy! It should arrive Sunday! 6y
