#OffMyShelf “Out of your comfort zone”

A good friend gave me this book, it‘s very much not what I usually read. But I‘m glad I did. There are no easy fixes or answers. Boyle asks only that we have compassion for our fellow humans.

“The strategy of Jesus is not centered in taking the right stand on issues, but rather in standing in the right place-with the outcast and those relegated to the margins.”

Reading very much out of my comfort zone, I‘m in East Los Angeles in the current century with Pastor Gregory Boyle and the congregants and residents of the area in this nonfiction account of Boyle‘s outreach efforts.

BarbaraJean Ohhh, I want to read this! Greg Boyle has been referenced a LOT in my spiritual direction studies this year. 1w
Ruthiella @BarbaraJean I think you will get a lot out of it given your interests. I appreciate what Boyle is saying a lot about humanity. (edited) 1w

Ruthiella @Deblovestoread Glad to hear it! 😃 1w
Christine I have to get to this one. I‘m just finishing a semester of teaching incarcerated folks, many of whom grew up in SoCal gang life. They are remarkably thoughtful and diligent students. I wish they‘d met Boyle and been offered a different path. 1w
Ruthiella @Christine That‘s wonderful that you are teaching people who are incarcerated. Education is such a game changer. One of the things Boyle underscores in this book is that it‘s never too late to change one‘s path. 1w

A memoir. It's the highest on my TBR list but I might end up reading something lower down first

I found this book to be highly comforting and inspirational at this time of my life even more so because I am Catholic. (I am not judging anyone else‘s religious views at all.) I was a bit bothered by him speaking for Christ (“The Voice of Christ”) sometimes without a Biblical reference. But, it did help him make his points. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
