I‘ve found myself to be in the position recently needing to downsize my personal library. While taking some books to Half Price Books, I came across this gem among the stacks. It doesn‘t count if I buy it using the money earned from selling books, right!? 😅

I‘ve loved John O‘Donohue‘s writing in the past. His book of blessings (To Bless the Space Between Us) always has something rich and meaningful to offer, and I‘ve often come across quotations from O‘Donohue‘s work that are exactly what I need when they cross my path. So I had high expectations for this one, having had it on my TBR for some time.

O‘Donohue offers an exploration of Celtic spirituality as he examines friendship, the senses, ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d)… solitude, work, aging, and death. Woven throughout is a reverence for beauty and for the natural world. I enjoyed this overall, but often found it meandering & disconnected. Looking back at sections I underlined, there were quite a few gems along the way…so I‘m puzzled as to why it left me underwhelmed.

I read it over 3 months, in fits and starts, and I wonder if it would have read better for me if I‘d dipped into it more frequently—⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …savoring it more consistently. I will probably read this again, more slowly, dipping into chapters and sections as I feel drawn to them.

This was my April #DoubleSpin and I also chose to read it as # 44 for #50x50—“Related to my vocation/profession”—connecting it to my coursework in spiritual direction. @TheAromaofBooks

“The divine has such passionate creativity and instinct for the fully inhabited life. If you allow yourself to be the person that you are, then everything will come into rhythm. If you live the life you love, you will receive shelter and blessings. Sometimes the great famine of blessing in and around us derives from the fact that we are not living the life we love, rather we are living the life that is expected of us.”

April‘s #DoubleSpin is clear—and is also my #44 pick for #50x50. For my #BookSpin, I get to pick a book published in the 1950s—70s for #192025. Above are the three I‘m thinking about… any recommendations?

Suet624 Yay for Anam Cara. I‘ve only read A Separate Peace (as a teenager) out of the three and I liked it. (edited) 8mo
TheBookHippie I like them all 👀🤫🙃 8mo
BarbaraJean @Suet624 I'm really looking forward to Anam Cara. It's been on my list for so long and it's nice to have the “assignment“ to read it! @TheBookHippie Good news is I'll be reading them all at some point before the end of the year!! 8mo

TheAromaofBooks Oh Black Sheep is one of my favorite Heyer romances!! 8mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Oh, that‘s good to know! I‘ve been leaning toward Black Sheep anyway because I‘m pretty sure that will be a nice escapist read—the other two, not so much 😆 8mo

For those of you who are retired or getting close to retiring I hope you can take some Inspiration from John O‘Donohue. I love everything about this blessing, with every line carrying a potent offering.

This book is special to me not only because of the brilliance of this Irishman but because I purchased this collection while traveling in Ireland.

Jeg I wish time would slow but I don't know about you Sue but for me it has speeded up. 14mo

Suet624 @Jeg I‘ve worked for years under a great deal of stress and a fast pace. So I‘ve had to come to terms with the fact that I don‘t have to rush, that I can read for hours in a chair or go for long walks. I still see kids and grandkids and have a variety of obligations but it all feels much slower. I have to remind myself that this a good thing. That I can explore other things I didn‘t have time for before. And yet, I know what you mean. 🔽 14mo
Suet624 Days feel quicker and sometimes I can‘t keep up. What do you find is making time speed up? (edited) 14mo
Jeg My dad always said the older he got the faster time went . So I‘m thinking maybe just getting older is what makes it seem to be going faster. 14mo
Suet624 @Jeg A spiritual person once said that the speed of our life was like an audio tape. As the right side of the tape was getting closer to the end the wheel was moving very quickly. So that would support your feeling life was speeding up. 😊. (Don‘t know if that makes sense the way I wrote it, but…) (edited) 14mo
Mollyanna I am six months from retirement and this was perfect! Thank you for sharing. 14mo
Suet624 @Mollyanna it‘s a roller coaster ride, one of delight and sometimes confusion about your worth and what to do next. At least it was for me. One that you‘ll eventually find your way through. This blessing really helps to provide some comfort and direction. Stay in touch and let me know how it‘s going once you embark on that journey. 14mo
Mollyanna That is helpful to hear. I have had mixed emotions as it gets nearer, from excitement to straight up fear to hope to everything. I will definitely keep this blessing in my back pocket for reassurance 😊. 14mo
Suet624 @Mollyanna best wishes to you. 💕💕 14mo

A lovely, contemplative book of prayer.
