A well written story that I found inspiring. Both characters are either hearing impaired or deaf. The trauma and tragedy they both endured was heart-rending. In the author notes I learned that she is also hearing impaired and that explained how she was able to write such beautiful and real to life characters. There are triggers in this book, so be aware if you are sensitive to such things. 4.5 ⭐️#LitsyLove #LitsyLoveReads @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Assuming it stayed fairly accurate to true life, the parents and family of Helen sure didn‘t help, as they just gave in her tantrums, feeling badly because she was unable to understand why they might deny her what she wanted. It‘s short, but it has made me want to read more, probably nonfiction. I liked that there was a broad continuation at the end of the book that quickly explained more of Helen and Annie‘s lives together.

4/5 ⭐️s
this personal story tackles a serious subject and a difficult set of circumstances with humor and bravery. I appreciated how the author depicted her disability as both a superpower and something difficult and frustrating (as someone with disabilities, this was very relatable for me!). graphic novels really work well for educational purposes/memoir, and this is probably my favorite one that I have read thus far.

I have learned so much about Deaf history though this middle grade series. Mary is now an adult in this third book, she is a teacher on Martha's Vineyard and travels abroad to spend time at Paris School for the Deaf in hopes of learning how to mimic it back home in the US.

I am currently taking a course trying to learn British Sign Language and I would like to learn more about deaf culture and I was wondering if anyone knew of any novels which have this included? I‘d be very grateful! Thank you

Mrs_B @fredthemoose that‘s a great suggestion, thank you! 4mo

TieDyeDude I'm not sure about novels. I read a non-fiction book that examined the independent development of a new form of sign language that was really interesting and looked at sign language from a linguistic and social POV. There is also a hearing-impaired contestant on this year's Great British Baking Show, which was cool to see, though her interpreter was not shown too often and she wore a device, so her signing was also minimal. 4mo
Megabooks You may already know this! True Biz features American Sign Language, which because of the influence of French teachers at early American deaf schools, is more similar to LSF than British Sign Language. However, I will recommend this memoir by an American Deaf author. I love how he talked about traveling with other Deaf folks who speak other sign languages. (edited) 4mo

“You Don't Know Everything, Jilly P“ is about a young girl who lives in San Fransisco and her mom has a new baby who has a hearing disability. Jilly P meets someone who helps her have difficult conversations about serious issues. These include hearing disabilities, being a black person in our society, and being from a mixed family in our society. Can be a good book to introduce these heavy topics to middle school students.
