This was an eye-opening, heartbreaking read written by a female journalist in 1887. Nellie Bly had herself (all too easily) committed to NYC insane asylum to expose the horrific treatment shown to the patients, many who were completely SANE. This was a beyond disturbing account of her 10 days spent on Blackwell Island. Thank you @IndoorDame for posting & sharing. #Pop22 #VictorianTimes #SocialHorror #Booked2022 #WrittenByAJournalist

While this was a disturbing account both for the brutality portrayed in the institution and for the lack of power the women there had, it was also amazing to see something written by a female journalist as early as 1887, and to learn that in the end people took her account seriously and she affected some measure of change. #Nonfiction2022 #ImABasketCase #Booked2022 #WrittenByAJournalist

This was a disappointment. I‘m a fan of Jami, but this was so disorganized that I only gleaned a piecemeal sense of her life. Lots of travel, lots of book panels, and occasional explanations of her family and writing process. Yeah, just didn‘t do it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Xe Sands does a mediocre narration job. 👎🏻 (I usually like her, but this was a poor author/narrator match for me. I wonder why they decided against Jami narrating.)

Cinfhen I‘ve seen a few reviews that were 💯 in line with your review. Very disappointing 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, I‘d definitely say don‘t bother with this one. She should stick to fiction. 2y
britt_brooke I‘m listening to this now and enjoying it. The narrator sounds a lot like Jami Attenberg, so much I didn‘t realize it wasn‘t her. 🤦🏼‍♀️ But it is very stream of consciousness for a memoir which I definitely think will turn some readers off. 1y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it, but it definitely turned me off! 1y

This is a tough book. The author began researching after the Affordable Care Act passed, and the premise about that section is 💯 more relevant in Covid times. Plus there‘s a section about pro-gun laws and suicide (TW for this) that is brutal. The section about taxes and schools punched me in the gut too.
