I completed the #Booked2022 Challenge! HUZZAH!! I likely wouldn't have found Voices or The Prettiest Star without these prompts, so thank you! They were some of the better books I read this year. Now on to 2023.

❄2 In a Dark, Dark Wood #TitleRepeatsItself

🌸8 Voices From Chernobyl #WrittenByAJournalist

☀13 Butterflies in November #IncludesARecipe

🍁19 Madam #DarkAcademiaNovel

As a NON non-fic reader, I always dread those prompts in challenges. But this ended up being the perfect ‘meet-cute‘ of prompt vs book vs this reluctant NF reader! As an unashamed romantic, a huge fan of film journalism, who inhaled film magazines in my 20s cover-to-cover, and now religiously listens to movie podcasts ‘film spotting‘ and ‘the next picture show‘ , I heard about this book on one of those, and knew it was for me. (Cont. in comments.)

KarenUK It‘s charming, gossipy behind-the-scenes stuff, about iconic rom-coms from When Harry met Sally to present day. Definitely my wheelhouse! #booked2022 #writtenbyajournalist @Cinfhen @barbarathebibliophile @alisiakae 2y

Trying to come back to participating in the #WeeklyForecast now that the number of books I read in a week is climbing again!

Two of these are for my last 3 remaining #Booked2022 prompts, #blackcentricimprint and #writtenbyajournalist. Shara Wheeler is my fun read for the week.

Librariana I really enjoyed I Kissed Shara Wheeler and I hope you do as well! 😊💜 2y

A collection of essays that explore the darker side of life. Sharlet photographs and interviews people who exist on the edge of "society". He relates their lives with compassion and empathy. It was dark and sad and I had to take breaks from it, but it was interesting. #Booked2022 #WrittenByAJournalist 2nd book finished for #20in4 Readathon @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Andrew65

Cinfhen Sounds like a tough read but impactful 2y

The Monster of Florence | Douglas Preston

This was an interesting book. Douglas Preston went to Florence Italy to write a fictional crime novel & ended up getting mixed up with the real monster of Florence case. A case that was compared to London's Jack the Ripper & helped inspire Thomas Harris' Hannibal.

DGRachel I really enjoyed this book. So much so that when I accidentally left my copy on a plane (unfinished) I had to buy another (hardcover) copy so I could finish it. 😂 2y
BookwormAHN @DGRachel I don't blame you 😸 2y

I listened to this because I wanted to better understand Russia‘s backslide (again) into a totalitarian regime. Gessen tells the story of the last 30+ years from the perspective of four different people, all born around the time when Russia should have become a democracy. Very well-written and smart, but also sad and terrifying.

Audio is narrated by the author, and they talk FAST. I had to slow down from my usual 2x. 😅

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain This was also my #WrittenByAJournalist book for #Booked2022. 2y

Ever since I was a teen and devoured fashion magazines, my dream job was to be the editor of Vogue Magazine (USA). It was Anna Wintour‘s dream job as well. This is a well researched book about what it takes to make that happen, and what is necessary to hold on to that crown. Her father was a prominent journalist, and she wanted him to be proud. A peek into the life of corporate wealth where your wildest ideas come to life. I loved it! #booked2022

A low pick for this #BusinessBook looking at the power of deadlines.

I guess it‘s more organisational behaviour that self-help (despite the subtitle). Cox, a journalist, goes into several companies to uncover how they approach deadlines - new restaurants, an Easter lily farm, a ski slope at the start of the season, a tech pitch battle, Black Friday and disaster relief.

The stories themselves were Interesting - the logistics

rockpools of making your lilies bloom to a changing deadline, or covering a resort in man-made snow 🤯! And it gave me stuff to think about - soft deadlines, right-to-left planning, using deadlines to revise and improve…

It did feel like it was written by a journalist- I‘m not entirely sure it achieved what he intended as a whole book. And the author at times came across a tad patronising.

So interesting content but not a gripping read.

TrishB I missed a chance! A book about deadlines. The things that drive you crazy in work. Or the people that never meet them. 3y
rockpools @TrishB 😁 There‘s still a gap in the market for you to write the definitive book on all of these things! I seem to have become one of those people that never meet them in the last couple of years… 😕 3y
