A rich Brit hires Leo, an unlikely detective who started a website when his girlfriend went missing, to find his long lost daughter. She‘s drawn some money from her trust while in Kathmandu, so that‘s where Leo goes first. The first half of this book is well written and plotted. It goes to heck when the typos start and keep coming, and the writing deteriorates. On the one hand, the descriptions of #Nepal are excellent—the author is well- ⬇️

Texreader traveled and it shows. On the other hand, the daughter‘s charitable work is just dropped as if it were the least important part of her life—which makes no sense to the storyline, and the same is true for the dropped storyline about Leo‘s missing girlfriend. It‘s like the author plane forgot what he was writing about. For a strong start and a lackluster ending, this is barely a pick. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks #letterK #litsyatoz (edited) 1d

From the creators of the podcast Criminalia, this book is part cocktail recipes and part look at the world‘s notorious murderers, thieves, spies, and infamous ne‘er-do-wells. It‘s quirky and fun, and each recipe has an alcoholic and a nonalcoholic version. I‘m not crafty enough to make them for just myself, but it was fun reading the recipes and the stories! #LitsyAToZ #LetterK

3.5/4⭐️ (between very good and excellent)

I love the premise of this book and I flew through it, however I suspect I would have enjoyed it even more if I knew more about Japanese cuisine. The food descriptions meant nothing to me. The human stories resonated though.

Plot and Engagement: 4 (excellent) Character and Atmosphere: 3 (very good)

This 4th book in the series really focuses on Mma Makutsi, the assistant lady detective. She flexes her entrepreneurial muscles and her love life (or lack thereof) gets examined. Life continues on for Mma Ramotswe and her fiance Mr JLB Matekoni as he returns to work from his illness and they deal with a misbehaving Puso. Mma Ramotswe faces her first competitor in the detective business and she helps a businessman right past wrongs. ⬇️

I have been reading her Princes of Sin series, which is tangentially related, so aside from the fact that I have kind of spoilered myself & I‘m trying to reckon the Princes I know… I liked it, the worldbuilding is good, Emilia‘s depiction of grief was so visceral, Wrath… I‘m not sure about what‘s going on with his motives here -but 🥵. Too much happens at the end, &things that seemed like a big deal fizzled, plenty for the next 2 books to resolve.
