Found this in the library when looking for the author‘s Shardlake mysteries. Starting today. Already intrigued. Madrid 1940s. Spies, espionage. A “bleak winter thriller.” (Back cover). Still feels more like winter than spring here.

PatriciaU I like this author a lot. 5d
dabbe Another excellent one of his. I'm so sad he's gone! 😭 5d
kspenmoll @dabbe I did not realize he had died last year. Loving his books, so, yes, it is sad. 4d

I have gone to several signings. The last one I attended was with my best reading friend when we visited Ruta Sepetys in Greensboro. We walked into the store with her. It was such an awesome experience. #FunDaySunday @BookmarkTavern

I‘m not sure why I requested this book from the library or who might have recommended it. It‘s a wild story - a bit like an old episode of a Rod Serling tv show. The story involves an underground internet program in which philanderers (in this particular case) are punished and a nun is part of the morality squad. I have no idea how to describe the book and I wouldn‘t necessarily recommend it but it was interesting while I was in the midst of it.

sarahbarnes So funny - I have seen this book on the shelf of a few bookstores in the past year and the cover keeps catching my eye. I haven‘t read it or bought it but good to know your take on it. 4mo
Suet624 If you can find it at the library I'd love to see what you got out of it. It was a compulsive read. But pretty trippy. I wouldn't run out and buy it though. 4mo
sarahbarnes I‘ll see if my library has it. 4mo

Nine books for May! It was very hard to pick a favorite book for May but if forced to, I‘d pick the tagged book. Followed by a tie between Queen of the South and Sea of Tranquility. Four books this month for #Spain #foodandlit. Two books for #authoramonth. Two for #readingOceania #Palau and #NewZealand and of course all of them for #litsyatoz but mostly for #letterQ and #letterY

Librarybelle Wonderful!! 10mo

During dictator Franco‘s reign in #Spain, life was extraordinarily hard for average citizens but especially those whose parents fought on the “wrong side” during the Spanish Civil War. It‘s the 1950s, and along comes a Texas teen Dan whose dad wants to enter the oil business with Franco. But Dan has a huge heart and empathy and falls for a hotel maid. We learn her family‘s stories through various family members and friends and they are heart-

Texreader breaking. This author writes brilliant books. I‘ve loved them all and this one is just as good. Highly highly recommended especially about very recent events that unbelievably continued to occur into the 1980s. #foodandlit 10mo

Madrid 1940, what everyone wants to know is if Franco will join the war on Hitler‘s side. Into this British Intelligence sends Harry to spy on his old school friend Sandy. Sandy has discovered gold which Franco is desperate for.

Being in Madrid, has Harry thinking about a trip he and another classmate, Bernie, made in 1931. We also gets Bernie‘s story from 1937.

Naturally, a book about war and its consequences and how people try to survive.

AnneCecilie #foodandlit #Spain @Texreader @Catsandbooks I‘m so happy that this challenge “made” me read a book I bought in 2009 10mo

My daughter and I tried Toro, a Spanish (as opposed to Mexican) food restaurant for #foodandlit. It was extraordinary! We had montaditos (queso de cabra frito) which knocked our socks off. Then we shared baguette sandwiches (jamón serrano with manchego cheese and cochinita pibil) and salads, and for dessert, torrijas. Toro was a brilliant find and a new restaurant for our list of places to go like last month‘s Venezuelan restaurant. #Spain
