While the book has an interesting premise—Captain “Black Jack“ Geary, a hero frozen in time for a century, who wakes up to find the fleet's tactics have devolved into mindless charges—the book is heavily focused on the how of getting a fleet home, which means a lot of detailed descriptions of engagements, formation changes, and missile deployment. For military sci-fi fans, this tactical depth is the main appeal. Not for me, I expected more SciFi.

4.5⭐
I‘m never disappointed by this series of books by Yarros. However, I am a little bummed that I read this one out of order, because I should‘ve read Hallowed Ground first. I feel like it would‘ve had some lead-up to this book. Either way, I love these characters, and I especially love Samantha from book 3 of the series, who plays a significant role in this.
🎙️Teddy Hamilton always delivers top-notch narrating, and CJ Bloom was decent, also.

Skippy, the alien beer can, as usual, steals the show.

Hedges in this book, exposes the underbelly of war by revealing its futility, reckless abandon, and senseless destruction. There is no real point to it. A few soulless ghouls may profit, but the vast majority are left with broken and devastated lives. Peace, love, diplomacy, and a respect for humanity offer simple, powerful alternatives to the problems manufactured by the power-hungry.

Interesting space opera where humans use artificial constructs to upload into to fight a war against aliens. Interesting concepts, mystifying aliens and weird artefacts. What's not to like.

I started this series a while ago and have only read the first book. While it doesn't have any major twists, it's a good read with two interconnected storylines. A lawyer and his wife are murdered, prompting his brother, Major Grant, to return and care for their children. Alongside this, there's a subplot about a girl who was bullied and took her own life. The two narratives are skillfully intertwined.

Okay let‘s be honest and say I didn‘t like the ending because of one characters. Otherwise it was good
