Of Love and Shadows | Isabel Allende
post image
Pickpick

A beautifully written and powerful book, Isabel evokes the atmosphere of the strife due to govt takeovers and brutal dictatorships in South America. The MC (a journalist) and her counterpart try to uncover the harsh truths of innocent persons who have “disappeared“… I believe there is a film based on it-has anyone watched it??

mrp27 This is one of my favorite Allende books. I saw the movie years ago, I hardly remember it. I think Jennifer Connelly played the mc and overall it was ok. 2y

Three lives collide, then intertwine, on a snowy night in Brooklyn. Three tales unfold with clarity and love…
Title is based on this quote from Albert Camus “In the midst of winter, I finally found there was within me an invincible summer.”

I loved this! It had a certain mysterious aura and magic, and the characters were rich. A tender love affair that had to be hidden from the world and 3 generations, from 1939 to the present day…it will sweep you up and draw you in

Paula | Isabel Allende
post image
Pickpick

This was a heartbreaking memoir. When Isabel‘s daughter Paula fell ill and became comatose, Isabel began writing a memoir/sociopolitical commentary/So. American history dedicated to her. Achingly sad, but important 💔

Ines of My Soul: A Novel | Isabel Allende
post image
Mehso-so

Ines Suárez was born in 1507, and by the time she died, in 1580, she had journeyed to the New World, become the lover of the first governor of Chile and defended the city of Santiago…an amazing story. But Allende‘s version feels distant and academic. An audio read for me

Great narrative both personal and historical of Allende‘s home country Chile. She gives, at times, both amusing and tongue-in-cheek reflection of politics, stoicism, and female repression of her homeland - many of which details appear in her other NF and HF writing. Well done ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Soul of a Woman | Isabel Allende
post image
Pickpick

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #AuthorAMonth2021 @Soubhiville

Interesting collection of feminist writings by this author. I found it insightful and Allende expresses her views, her hopes, and her anger through this book in a very thoughtful manner. She uses a lot of her personal background and relates it to other women. Personally, I find her voice in her fiction writing to be a bit stronger, but I appreciate her for sharing this book.

Crazeedi I have an Allende book to read before the end of the month! 2y

The Angel's Game | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
post image
Mehso-so

Pulp fiction writer David Martín is struggling to stay afloat. When he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance…after that the plot becomes intricate and mind-boggling. David has a brain tumor, then he doesn‘t. He becomes an unreliable narrator. I think I need to go back and read Shadow of the Wind in hopes it will all make sense.

Prisoner of Heaven | Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Very confusing, bc it has a non linear structure. Not my favorite Zafon. Beautiful writing but there are so many unanswered questions…
