Meh. Only reason I'm not totally against it is because of its historical value. Other than that, I felt like that the intention and emotion is very forced.

This was an epic story based on the true experiences of the author‘s grandparents and mother. It was quite brutal in certain parts and really difficult to read/listen. I was unaware of the still ongoing conflict between the Karen people of Southeast Asia and Burmese government now #Myanmar. This book highlights their struggle for independence while also educating on the atrocities committed by British, Japanese and US governments. 👇🏼

#NotBookRelated but wanted to share that both my transatlantic flight & my current domestic flight has had a female pilot 👩✈️ ❣️🙌🏻 #GoLadies
Current read / VERY INTERESTING read by author who has a lovely cadence & tone. Burma in the 1940‘s leading up to past WWII #ReadingAsia21 I‘m learning SO MUCH
I‘m 5.5 hours into the audio book with 7.5 to go. Trying to hang on, but may bail. I absolutely love being transported to Burma, and seeing it all through the eyes of Kim, a Karin woman, and Benny, her white, Indian Jewish husband, a wartime entrepreneur. But I‘m frustrated. Benny falls so abruptly into [spoiler] promiscuous adultery that he seems a different character. The story is also sagging in the middle. But I do love the author‘s narration.
It‘s been so crazy at the library in such a good way! I‘ve been having to spend something like 2 hours every day just replenishing my displays 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🕺 I can fill one up, and an hour later I wind up having to find more replacements 😆!
Anyway, 2 books for the #SouthernLit Display, 2FH is for #BeachReads, and the bottom 4 are for #HistoricalFiction.
Read any of these?!

Book 30: Took me a while to trundle through. Perhaps overly long with giant leaps through time to tick the multigenerational box while telling this family story. But it's a period of history I didn't know much about so stuck with it for that.
I found this both very interesting and very difficult to read. I loved how it‘s centered on the Karen people of Burma but it‘s very intense - full of complicated and dark history of colonialism, the war in Southeast Asia and the Karen people‘s long struggle for independence. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
You ever subconsciously find & stick to a “theme” while book shopping? 🧐
Serendipity!! I used a B&N coupon to get these paperbacks— and after the fact I noticed each happen to have been nominated for National Book Awards. One is a winner, one a finalist, one on the long list. Awesome. 🤘🏻 #bookhaul
Spending the evening with Miss Burma. Took the first 50 pages to get into this novel, but I am all in now. I know so little about the history of this part of the world.
Working on reading The Women's Prize long list!
Picked up a couple more for the Womens Prize for fiction longlist. #womensprizelonglist
Is anyone else really excited for this long list????
Avocado toast + Book! I love having this week off 😍. Happy Wednesday!
A rich stew of political intrigue and multi-ethnic relations in Myanmar, a place whose history I am attempting to understand. It is an investigation of betrayal and estrangement between the family members portrayed, but also in the larger political sense. I was taken by many of the characters but Khin, a main character, acted in a cold and cruel way while the author told us of her loving and loyalty. This was disturbing but largely a great read.
Here are some of the books that are #trendingnow after being named as #manbooker or #nationalbookaward nominees 🏆 I narrowed the list down to the 6 that I am interested in reading 🤗
