Saving Fish from Drowning
Saving Fish from Drowning | Amy Tan
A rollicking, adventure-filled story . . . packed [with] the human capacity for love. USA Today A superbly executed, good-hearted farce that is part romance and part mystery . . . With Tan s many talents on display, it s her idiosyncratic wit and sly observations . . . that make this book pure pleasure. San Francisco Chronicle San Francisco art patron Bibi Chen has planned a journey of the senses along the famed Burma Road for eleven lucky friends. But after her mysterious death, Bibi watches aghast from her ghostly perch as the travelers veer off her itinerary and embark on a trail paved with cultural gaffes and tribal curses, Buddhist illusions and romantic desires. On Christmas morning, the tourists cruise across a misty lake and disappear. With picaresque characters and mesmerizing imagery, Saving Fish from Drowning gives us a voice as idiosyncratic, sharp, and affectionate as the mothers of The Joy Luck Club. Bibi is the observant eye of human nature the witness of good intentions and bad outcomes, of desperate souls and those who wish to save them. In the end, Tan takes her readers to that place in their own heart where hope is found. Amy Tan is among our great storytellers. The New York Times Book Review Amy Tan has created an almost magical adventure that, page by page, becomes a metaphor for human relationships. Isabel Allende With humor, ruthlessness, and wild imagination, Tan has reaped [a] fantastic tale of human longings and (of course) their consequences. Elle A book that s easy to read and hard to forget. Newsweek"

#AuthorAMonth2021 @Soubhiville

I finished this last month. This is my first read by Amy Tan, and although I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped, I will definitely try another by her.

The writing was beautiful, but the story was slow and confusing in parts.

If anyone is interested in this book I'm happy to pass on my used paperback copy to you. #PayItForward

Riveted_Reader_Melissa This is one of hers I need to try to read. I decided to re-read The Joy Luck Club last month, and maybe because it was a re-read…I still haven‘t finished it. Last month was a slow reading month for me. 3y
Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa would you like me to send this one to you? Last month was a slow reading month for me too. I kept starting books I just couldn't really get into. Hopefully September will be better for both of us. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Addison_Reads Yes, and thank you. I think for me it was a combination of watching too much news (lots going on in the world) and my doctor put me on prednisone in the middle of the month for any allergic “to something” rash which basically just made me fall asleep anytime I sat down to read. So here‘s to better reading for both of us in Sept.! 3y

Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I still have your address so I will get this sent out this week for you. And I understand about the news, I'm in the new scary wild west world of Texas and its ridiculous new laws. 😕 but Yay! for September and good reads ahead. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Addison_Reads Ugh! Texas! Just when I thought the month was quieting down after evacuations from Afghanistan and from a hurricane path/wild fires …The Supreme Court just made the whole month so much worse. And sadly I can guarantee you won‘t be alone, many other state will see this as permission to pass similar laws ASAP to get around the law. And deputizing everyday citizens to not only harass, but now sue…is going to get ugly fast. ⤵️ 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ all those nuts that protest outside of Planned Parenthood, etc are going to see it as a license to escalate, putting women in more danger than just the law itself. It‘s all just depressing and completely disgusting. 3y
vlwelser This is my least favorite of her books. You should try The Kitchen God's Wife. Or basically anything else. 3y
Addison_Reads @vlwelser My local library has that one so I will definitely try it. 3y

lynneamch So beautiful. I loved the book, too. 4y
TK-421 @lynneamch I haven‘t read it yet but I‘ve loved every Amy Tan book I‘ve read so far! 4y
lynneamch FYI, no one else in a bookclub I was in liked it, except for my good friend @Talewaggingreads . So, we thought we should just have our own book club. Lol. 4y

Saturday night chips & onion dip. I loved this book so much and was shocked to find so many negative reviews. I loved everything that the haters hated. Long-winded tangents, long, winding story before getting to the action, details about history & politics. And I loved all the quirky characters.

I read this book in March 2010 and was recently thinking about it so I listened this time. I really wasn't sure about reading this book but I enjoyed it. ~~ Here is the book blurb: "Bibi Chen is dead. And she wants to tell you a story. Busineswoman, patron of the arts and socialite Bibi Chen has been killed in mysterious circumstances. Her death may or may not be linked to the disappearance of eleven American tourists in southern Burma.

I'm really enjoying this Amy Tan so far! Quite different and much more humorous than JLC and Bonesetter's Daughter. As soon as I try and take a picture of my littlest, she lunges for the phone!

leslieisreading @Chachic Nice! I'll have to check the out. I loved Beginner's Guide! I found out about it because an American romance author I like recommended it. I didn't know anything about the author or that group. 8y
Chachic @leslieisreading Was it Courtney Milan? She's been raving about the book.😊 So glad Filipino romance is getting more attention because of it. Six de los Reyes has a few more titles that are currently out, I need to read them! 8y

I found the book to be very disjointed... Parts of it were incredibly intriguing and then all of a sudden it would get incredibly weird... A tough one to get through for me.
