The Queen of the Night | Alexander Chee

Fascinating look at Paris in the last half of the 19th Century, as seen through the eyes of a woman who experienced life in all social stratas. The grit and the glamour, she lived it all, from circus performer to courtesan to famous opera singer. But even as a smart, talented woman, she was at the mercy of people - primarily men - more powerful. On the whole, a rather sad tale.

Soft pick - I enjoyed this book set in Paris during the late 1800's about two sisters finding their way after their fathers death. It was a good look into the time period and what young girls had to do to survive but also how certain choices could impact their lives. I did find I wanted to put the book down at times in the beginning but I'm glad I finished. The way the author intertwined the story with some boy criminals at the time was well done.

Supposed to be more accurate than the other translation I read nearly 20 years ago, restoring a lot of cut material. There may have been good reasons for the cuts. The only interest I could summon up was seeing how the musical adapted the material.

Here‘s my review for this book. I‘ve never read this book before.

I‘m counting this book towards a reading challenge I‘m participating in on StoryGraph.

Here‘s my progress on this book. The first half dragged a little bit but it‘s gotten better now. I haven‘t watched the movie or the musical. I‘m interested to hear what the music sounds like. I‘ve heard the song “The Phantom Of The Opera” from the musical but that‘s it. I haven‘t heard any other songs. This could be a good book to read during Halloween but I‘d rather read it now. I wasn‘t in the mood for it during October.

dabbe I think you would love the movie, too. ♥️💙💚 4w
wildwoodreads The movie is so good! The book and movie both are some of my favorites! 3w
