A Fine and Pleasant Misery | Patrick F. McManus
post image
Pickpick

If you were to ask me who the most influential authors were to me growing up, I think McManus would have to be pretty high on the list. I can remember reading his books when I was only 8 or 9 and not understanding half of it but loving the half that made sense!! A collection of articles originally published in Outdoor Life during McManus's tenure as a columnist there, these are anecdotal takes about hunting, fishing, camping, growing up poor, ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and more, with every page full of his dry humor. Out of this collection I especially loved the chapter “The Theory and Application of Old Men“ (“If you're a kid, what you need is someone who can take you out hunting or fishing or just poking around in the woods anytime you feel the urge. That's an old man.“), “Grogan's War Surplus“ (“The machete was needed anytime you needed to slash out your own trail. This necessity arose more often ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) than a person who is not a kid with a machete might think.“) and of course “The Great Cow Plot“ because no one understands how inherently evil cows actually are better than Patrick McManus (and I say this as someone who has worked with cows for many a year haha)

These little snippets of humor were just what I needed over the weekend. If you disagree with hunting and fishing, he probably isn't the author for you, but there is still a lot⬇

My #ReadtheUSA2022 challenge is looking TERRIBLE. I feel like I've been reading a lot of books that are taking place in the UK. I'm going to have to see if I can clean this up a bit before the end of the year.

Not bad for a debut. Not my favorite read this year, but held interest.

Mehso-so

Maybe I'm in a funk... or just overly critical. This was just kind of underwhelming. I expected a bit more. Oh well, you know what they say, on to the next one.

I'm slowly making my way through this series. Who knows if I'll actually finish it. So far it's not blowing me away, but it's not bad either.

EclecticBookLover Th recently re-read the series and it was just tge right blend of humor and ridiculousness I needed. It has its inconsistencies like any series, but its also alot of fun. 3y

This had it's moments. Going to give it 3.5 stars. Going to use this one for #ReadtheUSA2022 since parts of it take place in Hawaii.

The Secret History | Donna Tartt

I enjoyed this, but I can't help but wonder why the editors never seem to think Donna Tartt's books could use a bit more revision? They're just so unnecessarily long. There was so much here that I just didn't feel added much to the overall storyline or character development. But, I suppose this is why I'm not in publishing. 😆

Librarybelle This is on my to read list! I just need to make sure I have time to devote to it, given its size 😂 3y

How can you not find this entertaining?!? Johnny Depp sure did a great job of bringing this character to the big screen. 👏

TheAromaofBooks For a while my husband (who really loves Thompson) and I were commuting together and listened to some of Thompson's books on audio. Some of his short stories were SO funny I thought we were going to run off the road. I also thought Depp did a great job portraying him. 3y

This was on my #MustReads2022 list (which is still in the works honestly). While I enjoyed this, it wasn't particularly a standout. There's no shocking twist, it's mainly all suspense. A popcorn thriller as they say, but it's no J.D. Barker. 🤷‍♀️

Has anyone heard if there is going to be an official host for #ReadtheUSA2022 here on Litsy? I love seeing how many states I end up visiting every year - I hit 42 in 2021!! I like coloring them in as I go. 😁

Bookwormjillk I haven‘t heard anything, but I always track this too. I finished, but Indiana was a little sus. Going to prioritize it this year. 🤪 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I've only tracked it for two years and have not completed the challenge either year, but I've also never gone out of my way to do so... although this year I did finish a book that would have normally been a DNF because it got me to Kansas 😂 3y
Laughterhp I‘m loving all your bullet journal posts! I‘ve been thinking of doing the same thing. 3y

megnews I look all your journal pages. I‘m bad about starting journals and not keeping up with them. I‘ve thought about hosting a #RoadTripUSA22 but like you I just track where I‘ve read without the pressure of getting all the states. Still deciding. 🤔 3y
TheAromaofBooks @megnews - I love keeping my challenges lowkey so I like to try and get the states checked off but don't stress when I don't haha Keep me posted if you decide to make an official challenge, though!!! 3y
aperfectmjk I thought you were the host of this challenge. 🤭🤣 3y
TheAromaofBooks @aperfectmjk - I don't think anyone hosted one last year, but I still # all my different state visits, so there's that 😂 @megnews did decide to have an official USA-journey challenge, though, so you should tag her as you “travel“... and you can still tag me if you want because there always seem to be a few states I can't find haha 3y
