A Flicker in the Dark
A Flicker in the Dark | Stacy Willingham
From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller that is certain to be the launch of an amazing career. A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page...

A good debut thriller. It was a slow burn with the narrator becoming more and more unreliable. Plus, the main character did all the typical stupid things women in thrillers do. Predictable, and I was able to figure out all but one of the twists.

Overall I enjoyed this debut! Even though I guessed a big twist early on, there were others I didn‘t, and I had a hard time putting it down. It helped me get out of the slump I‘ve been in since the beginning of the semester. I will say that the ending felt rushed compared to the pacing of the rest of the book, and there was a noticeable overuse of certain words which is something I often overlook.

For a debut book this was an excellent read. A great psychological thriller, where there were a number of twists, some that I predicted but others that I didn‘t. I will certainly be looking out for other books by this author. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with a serial killer theme then I recommend this.

Going into day 1 of the #MarvellousMay Readathon by tucking into the second half of the tagged book, 47% through it currently. A good read about a woman whose father was a serial killer and someone seems to be repeating his actions 20 years later and making it personal to her.

A heard a lot of hype about this book. Read reviews from ones who hated it to ones that loved it, with a lot in between. I fall in with the ones who loved it. The ending got me! There are twist and turns, a lot of red herrings, so you don't know what is going to happen next.

If you like mystery, suspense, or psychological thrillers, then you need to read 'A Flicker in the Dark' by Stacy Willingham. I don't think you will be disappointed.

This was an enjoyable debut by this author, a little.slow at times, however the ending was a surprise, I didn't see coming, you think you know what will happen...and she gives that to you... But then she piles on the intrigue and you are left surprised and impressed.

3.) Sci Fi
4.). Romance
5.) Mystery/Horror

Bonus if the book is excellent on Audio

I really liked this one! I wanted to devour it in one sitting. ...The ending reveals felt a little all over the place at first, but it's all explained before the last page, and makes sense when you see the whole picture. And I liked how everything is not "okay" yet for the main character in the end. Healing is a process.

Although I wasn‘t “surprised” by the ending I did enjoy the journey. The “suspense” was well done. And our heroine is perfectly imperfect and likable as a result. Solid suspense read. #readingchallenge2022

Chloe‘s dad has a darkness… and is later arrested for 6 murders. 20 years later, girls start to go missing again and this time Chloe, Dr Chloe, can‘t help but believe they are connected.

I liked the story. I knew from the beginning who the guilty party was, I did have a moment of doubt on how it was all going to tie together. The relationship between parents and children was the area that had me. 3.75⭐ #MarvelousMarch

This is a very twisty murder/ suspense story that keeps guessing almost to the last page. Chloe is a poster child for unresolved childhood trauma. Now in her early 30‘s, her life is deeply scarred by her dad‘s conviction as a serial murderer, who has now spent 20 years of a life sentence in prison for the murders of 6 young girls. While Chloe tries to move on, a new girl goes missing. Full of vivid imagery and lots of twists.

Maybe a 2.5⭐️ for me. A serial killer‘s daughter grapples with potential copy-cat murders near the 20th anniversary of the original killings. Too many things didn‘t add up, and the trope was painfully overdone. Unnecessary substance abuse by the MC solely to make her less reliable. Repetitive words used (every movement snaked and everyone was pale). Highly predictable plot with obvious red herrings. Not for me but interesting premise! #BOTM #Audio

jlhammar Yes, I‘m with you! Way too much snaking! 3mo
lele1432 @jlhammar yes!! At first I was like huh, she‘s used that a time or two lol. But by the end it had become a distraction because I was just waiting for the next time she described a movement with that word. 😆 3mo

Writing that draws you in and keeps you there till the end
Excellent plotting with twists and an ending you won‘t see coming

From the plotting to the reveals this didn‘t disappoint me at all. Even the twists felt plausible. You may think you have it figured out but there‘s no way you have it ALL figured out.

Welp, if you ever go missing don‘t call me for help or expect me to figure out the mystery because I‘ll lock up the wrong person certain they‘re the right person and you‘ll still be missing. I‘ve been in a reading slump since the last week of November. I think I have read maybe 3 books since then. This one feels like it‘s going to be a quick read so maybe I‘ll get over the hump soon. How is everyone doing? I haven‘t been very active here lately and I miss the Litsy family. ❤️

ShyBookOwl I had quite a few reading slumps last year. It was frustrating. To pull myself out, I'd usually try listening to an audiobook of an old favourite I'd only done in text. A book I knew I could count on, but a new experience of it. Good luck! 4mo
wanderinglynn I too faced several reading slumps last year. I reread some faves and got into romance—a genre I had never really previously read. But I found the characters‘ journeys hopeful and the happily ever afters were what I needed. I also found that audiobooks helped because I could listen to a story while doing something else. 4mo

This was such a good audiobook!! The narrator was amazing, really infusing her voice with so much emotion and tension that I kept listening even when my husband and son tried to talk to me 😆. I love a good mystery with sinister family dynamics, secrets, and serial killers so this really came through. The only reason I‘m not rating it 5 🌟is because I guessed the big twist really early on. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Predictable with tired tropes and cringeworthy writing. One issue (of many) was the overuse of certain words. The verb “snake”, for example. As in “snakes his arm around my waist.” The 2nd time it was a bit much. The 7th time? Ridiculous. #BOTM

I‘ll admit I predicted who the killer was early on (although it still had twists that surprised me), and main characters who make terrible decisions and overuse alcohol/prescription pills feel a bit tired in this genre. However, I couldn‘t put this book down! It‘s a well-written, smart, and haunting psychological thriller; I think this author will be one to watch! #BOTM
