⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Recently challenged in our county (a Nashville suburb), and kept! 🎉 This graphic memoir is about a kid who deals with a parent‘s drug addiction. It‘s honest, thoughtful and relatable. Lovely art as well. There are kids out there who need this book; to know they‘re not alone.

This book is currently being challenged in my Tennessee county. Reading it so I can properly fight for it‘s retention, and it‘s SO GOOD so far. I‘m so tired of this shit, y‘all.

S3V3N It‘s such a good book! 8mo
KathyWheeler This book was considered for my university‘s Common Read Common World program last year or the year before, so I read it. I liked it and saw nothing I‘d object to my kids reading about. 8mo
Leftcoastzen Yes, what you said !😡 8mo

AllDebooks It enrages me that books are still being banned. Good for you for standing up for this one. It's crucial children have stories they can identify with so they can feel seen. Discussions around these subjects are essential at any age. Addiction is so hard on family members too. It should not be blanketed over and ignored at all. 8mo
Tamra My kids really enjoyed it! 8mo
Tamra But fairy tales with all kinds of violence & intolerance are okay to have in libraries. 🙄 8mo
britt_brooke @S3V3N @KathyWheeler @Leftcoastzen It‘s so frustrating. So far, we‘ve had a good track record of retaining the challenged books. Thankfully, most of our school board members are reasonable. There are 3 that are constantly trying to stir up shit. 8mo
britt_brooke @AllDebooks All of this!! 8mo
britt_brooke @Tamra Exactly!! 8mo
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke This is so aggravating! If you don‘t want to read a book, don‘t read it; if you don‘t want your children to read a book, don‘t let them; but that is where your right to determine what others read ends! (edited) 8mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler EXACTLY. Kids don‘t have to borrow anything they don‘t want to. It‘s really quite simple. 8mo
S3V3N @britt_brooke I hate to hear that. I will say, this book kept our students engaged and sparked great discussions in the classroom. 8mo
britt_brooke @S3V3N That makes me happy! 8mo
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke Yes! No one is forcing them to check out books. In fact, when I was a kid (actually even as an adult) the bigger deal people make about wanting to ban a book, the more likely I am to read it. That‘s why I read and loved The Poet X a couple of years ago. I probably wouldn‘t have read it at all without some crazy, unhinged people making a big deal about it. So these people may accomplish the opposite of what they want. 8mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler This right here. ⬆️ These unhinged people are absolutely selling books for these authors, but are too blinded to see it. I‘m buying every single one as are many others including students. (also, The Poet X was sooo good) 8mo
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke It really was. I read Gender Queer for the same reason and it had not been on my radar at all. They are expanding my reading! 😄 (edited) 8mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler YES!! 😂🫶🏼So much good can come from the nonsense.. 8mo

A solid February! My overall favorite was my #reread of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A recent book challenge in our county brought on the revisit.

britt_brooke @MyNamesParadise I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed Spare. Perks was a reread and I still love it!! 14mo

My boys checking out the “banned” section at our local children‘s indie and not understanding what‘s wrong with people. Fortunately, they‘ve read many of these books as part of our elementary school‘s ELA curriculum (Wit & Wisdom). Sadly, the challengers are coming for our curriculum, too. 🤬

AlaMich I live in a blue city and I am a liberal. All the stories of book-banning lately fill me with rage. 1y
britt_brooke @AlaMich At the risk of sounding cheesy, there‘s a war on books in this country. It‘s awful. 1y

This book isn‘t in the database, but controversy IN MY SONS‘ SCHOOL regarding “A Place Inside of Me” (tagged) inspired author Zetta Elliott to write this book about diversity. Today, our school received several copies from Ellliott! Here‘s the story: https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/author-responds-to-backlash-by-publishing-n...

JamieArc Thanks for sharing all these posts. I‘m not involved in our local school system, but it helps to know what is going on in other schools. 1y
britt_brooke @JamieArc The challenges have been rampant this school year in tennessee. 😣 It‘s incredible how social media has helped us get the authors involved. They‘re so inspiring! 1y

Ways to Make Sunshine was recently challenged - then voted unanimously to remain on shelves ? - in Sumner County TN (my county). Author Renée Watson followed the story and arranged for all 28 elementary schools to receive copies of the three book set! “Right to Read” is our grassroots advocacy group, started by one of my incredible friends. We‘re making a difference and will continue fighting!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved this 10 years ago; still 5 stars now. Thank you, book challengers, for igniting this #reread. This epistolary representation of high school is undoubtedly one of the best YA stories I‘ve ever read. Charlie is coping with the tragic death of a friend, yet he finds beauty in new experiences and friendships. An important story that lets teens know they‘re not alone during these stressful, formative times.

britt_brooke ⚠️ Challenged, and subsequently removed, for supposedly violating Tennessee‘s obscene content law. Absolutely false claims. Hoping our school board will do the proper thing and reinstate it. (edited) 1y

This lovely book is currently being challenged in our Tennessee county. It‘s been 10 years since I first read it, but gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ back then, so I‘m relishing this #reread. We‘re at indoor soccer training and I quite like being seen in public reading this right now. This book banning bullshit is relentless, but we‘ll keep fighting. #RightToRead

PS. Boo for movie tie-in covers. 🫣

TheBookHippie My daughter read the covers off her copy. It was such a comfort up her. It saddens me so much all the banning knowing how detrimental it will be for students. 1y
CBee This is a favorite of mine and it baffles me why anyone would think it needs to be challenged or banned!! 😡 1y
JackOBotts A beautiful read, such a shame it‘s being challenged. This was the first book that I passed from one friend to the next my sophomore year. I wanted everyone I cared about to read it. 💜 1y

RebL I worked for a used bookstore chain that booked Chbosky for an event. Hundreds of ppl showed, way more than expected. He couldn‘t sign everyone‘s book before he had to go to his next signing. He promised to come back that night & he did! He stayed until he met every patron—a few additional hours! He was also kind to bookstore staff. Nothing to do with banning, but everything to do with character. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yes! Boo to the movie tie-in covers. 99% of the time, they're worse. 1y
MicheleinPhilly Book banning is indeed bullshit. 🤬 1y
britt_brooke @CBee @JackOBotts @TheBookHippie Agree! And I swear, the banners never actually read the works in their entirety. They‘re very good at taking passages out of context and spinning it to fit their agenda. 1y
britt_brooke @RebL That‘s so awesome!! 🤍✨ 1y
britt_brooke @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Exactly. I usually go out of my way to avoid them! 1y
britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly 💯 - And it‘s been a mess in our county this school year. It‘s infuriating!! 1y
Megabooks I will never ever understand wanting to keep books from kids! 1y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Me either. If you don‘t want your kid to read it, fine. But don‘t keep it from others. 1y

Scochrane26 This sounds like a delightful book. Why would parents want to remove it? 1y
britt_brooke @Scochrane26 It‘s lovely! I just read it. It was challenged for supposedly promoting gender fluidity and critical race theory. It does neither of those things. 1y
ShananigansReads I started reading it when you first mentioned the ban and I‘ve seen no such evidence. 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anyone trying to remove this book from school libraries needs a head check. That said, our suburban TN school board will be voting on it soon. Ryan, a fourth grader, experiences some challenging life changes, but learns and grows as a result. Like many kids, she‘s inquisitive, headstrong, kind, and sensitive. This is delightful!

📣 All kids should have relatable representation in stories, and girls are allowed to have “boy” names.

swishandflick I mean... I was super young reading ROMANCE novels (and putting homemade book covers on them so people would leave me alone). It boggles my mind that people would gatekeep BOOKS from kids. Let people read! Ugh. 1y
swishandflick Also I should mention, not creepily young, but definitely 12/13 ish 😬 1y
britt_brooke @swishandflick I love that you did that!! Yes, it‘s super bonkers. This is not the first nor last book being challenged in our school district, but we‘re fighting hard against these people! 1y
