It‘s a rare unicorn: a dark #powercouple in a long-established #lgbtq relationship. Sex, death, echos of betrayal, and whimsical AIs of uncertain allegiances abound.

Previous volumes were each more of a standalone story; this one capitalizes on them.

Framing device: Canterbury tales.

Some women meet in Hell‘s Kitchen (the actual Hell‘s actual Kitchen). There‘s a refrigerator looming in the corner, and in the women‘s lives, there were once #superheroes.

One more thing our “heroines” have in common: their inferior #shortstories have turned them bitter.

Audiobook recommended, and (this time) +5 for Valente.

A #shortstory in the Machine Mandate #series. The Alabaster Admiral Anoushka, with her wife Numadesi, infiltrates a coven of religious fanatics. The story is told from the POV of a young sister. In an attempt to convert her, the coven stripped her of everything—her childhood, her memories, even her name. Dark, futuristic, and gay—what‘s not to like?

(A bit too short, tho.)

I‘d claim Nnedi Okorafor is similar to LeGuin when it comes to the structure of her characters‘ journeys; plus, she is to #sf what #magicalrealism is to fantasy. And while I usually prefer my sf a little harder, the whimsicality of her works and the undeniable freshness of her ideas have their appeal. As with magical realism and fantasy fans, not every sf fan will like this—though if you did, do yourself a favor, and read Remote Control next.

I have a complicated relationship with this author. I‘m not fond of her style, but she‘s good at worldbuilding, and I‘m a sucker for that, especially when it‘s not based on overdone Western mythologies. Still, this is the first of her works I truly liked—maybe because it‘s not a romance.

And either I‘ve gotten used to it, or the writing is better in this one.

I loved the trilogy this book follows, though I can understand why someone would not—it's written in a style that could be considered flat. I like it though—this underhanded, unostentatious treatment of emotions. The style is the same here, and, even if the plot is less intricate, it's still a win in my book.

Grimspace is a kind of extra dimension that allows rapid travel through space but can only be navigated by specially trained carriers of the J-Gene such as Sirantha Jax, formerly a star of the Corp, now on the run. There's space travel, weird life forms & environments & hocus pocus about the joys/perils of Grimspace. Also romance. Jax is a great character, but not enough to overcome my lack of enthusiasm for Sci-Fi.

Here‘s my #booked2021 first quarter wrap up! I skipped around, as usual, and managed to get through more prompts than I expected, so I‘m quite pleased. 😊 I enjoyed all of them too, except Boca Raton, but at least that one was short. 😅

Liked, but didn‘t love this. Loved-the twists, the sci-fi, and the MC. Didn‘t love-the pacing and the romance. The ending left me curious for the sequel.
