I started this one with 5 yr-old #Sassafras but found that there were too many harsh voices and unkind words. So I finished it on my own. Kate Winslet‘s performance was impressive. I liked it. 3/5 ⭐️s.

#Sassafras and I found a new kids series that we really like. Mega Bat inadvertently hitched a ride in a papaya crate to Canada 🇨🇦. He loves watching Star Wars and has a pigeon girlfriend. The second book is Mega Bat and Fancy Cat. A solid 3/5🦇s !

LauraJ Gotta love a good sequel! 5y

I read this with #Sassafras (a reread for me). When I took a break, he told me that he was going to read ahead, but that he wouldn‘t “spoil it” for me. We are planning to watch the movie soon. The little Madam Alexander dolls are from McDonald‘s happy meals years ago. 4/5🌈s

#Sassafras says AWESOME! He had many laugh out loud moments during our read. It has what I call “little boy humor” and his favorite parts were when characters were initiated into the Toad Pee Club. I enjoyed reading it to him. We are definitely going to get the next book in the series! A hit! 5/5🐸s

#Sassafras and I finished another bedtime read tonight. I actually liked this one. Sassafras says that his favorite part was when the service man was startled to see a penguin and ran out of the house. 3/5⭐️s We are looking for our next read and are open to recommendations.

sammisho How old is he? My 6 yo and I have been reading the boxcar children! 6y
catebutler How fun! I loved this book when I was a child. ❤️ 6y
Wife @sammisho He is 5. I looked at the Boxcar children books at the library tonight, but they didn‘t have the 1st book in the series. Does he need that for intro to the characters? There are so many books in the series!😮 6y
Wife @catebutler I had never read it. New to me. And fun to read it with him. BTW skip the movie, it‘s awful. He liked some of the slapstick humor with the penguins, but the story was Not the same. 6y
catebutler @Wife I vaguely remember the movie, when it first came out, with Jim Carrey, but you‘re right, the book was so much better! 6y

#Sassafras and I finished this as one of our bedtime reads. His favorite part was when Pa had the threshing machine come help harvest wheat. He was amazed that Laura had never seen a machine before. So he began listing all the machines she hadn‘t seen...it was a long list. 3/5⭐️s

The To-Do List | Sharon Struth

My #Sassafras sees me making to-do lists and made one of his own today (using beginning sounds of the words).
TOTW=Take over the world (he‘s been listening to GrandDad🤨)
PHWS=Play Hotwheels
WTT=Water the tree 🌲
BLS=Build Lego set
ECC=Eat candy canes
CMR=Clean my room
BLC=Build Lego city
LEGO (self explanatory 🙄)

I wonder if he likes Lego?🤔
Notice he checked everything off the list in blue. I‘ve never completed a to-do list myself.

Tadams4 So very cute! A future CEO! 6y

We finished this story a few days ago. There was a lot of info that was alluded to, so I had to explain much to a 5-yr-old. It did introduce the subjects of cruelty and death, but ultimately is a story of friendship and caring.

Last night, our city police dog was killed in the line of duty. #Sassafras has met/ interacted with the dog at library events. I want to give him appropriate info, but am not sure how to handle the violent nature of it.

JennyM Oh I‘m sorry. That‘s hard for a little one to process 6y
JoScho That is so sad and I have no advice on explaining that to a five year old 😔 6y
TrishB So sorry 💔 mine are much older now and I can‘t really remember how I would have handled that. Both mine are very different too. Do they need to know? 6y

Librarianaut That is terrible!! 6y
gradcat Breaks my heart.... 6y
Wife @TrishB I was thinking that a first experience with a death that is more remote than a family member would be beneficial for the future. However, because of the circumstances, I don‘t know if I want to open that can of worms. 6y
TrishB Such a tough call 💔 6y
ReadingRover I‘m so sorry. That‘s so sad. I don‘t have children but from working at the vet & as a petsitter I always tell people to celebrate the life of their pet & all the good memories. There is a poem called the Rainbow Bridge that we give out too. You can even make a memory book. In this case because the dog was not a pet you can still do all those things but also say how brave the dog was & he was protecting people. I‘m so sorry. It won‘t be easy. 😢 6y
